This year's team' started on a promising note when Coach Mullarkey welcomed five lettermen to his opening day practice. These five and a junior varsity grad shaped into one of Northis most successful squads in the last ten years. North started strong, winning their first four games in quick succession. Natick fell 55-35, then Thayer 76-37, fol- lowed by Arlington 76-51, and finally lVIission 88-58. The Raiders showed remarkable scoring balance in these games. Al Adams, Bob Walsh, and Doug Grutchfield all turned in high scoring performances to keep the opposition reeling. Everett brought North its first loss by coming from behind and Winning a thriller 63-57. Mullarkey's men werenit stopped by this and went on to win five more in succession against powerful opponents. Archbishop Williams gave Raider fans their Hrst squeaker with Bob Walsh bringing the victory home, 49-46, with clutch foul shooting. North then rolled over Weymouth 80-53, Rindge Tech 83-55, Newton 76-61, and VVeymouth again 74-52. In these games Jack Crowley, Cliff Cox and Don Stevenson displayed their scoring ability and spar- kling defensive touch. Powerful Brockton caught North on an off night, and the Raiders came out on the wrong end of a 68-59 score. Northhneeding two wins to qualify for Tech, bounced back to beat Braintree 73-56 and Rindge Tech 84-68 to reach the 652' goal. A return game with Braintree proved a thriller with North copping a 67-64 win. A cold North Quintet dropped a 61-52 decision to previously beaten Ar- lington. However, Mullarkeyis Raiders rebounded in a thrilling overtime period to an upset victory over unde- feated Brockton 71-69. Dependable reserves led by Dick lllann and Paul Pain- ten, backed up by Jack Carney, John Huber, Bruce Fitz- patrick, and Eddie Deane have given North's first six strong confidence and helped them to a successful season.
