1? - 1 North Quincyis undermanned football squad got off to a fast start losing only one game in the first four. But a plague of mid-season injuries disorganized Coach Dona- hue's Red Raiders. With a returning nucleus of only three veterans-Jack Crowley, Al Adams, and Ed Coughlan- North played a fighting Dedham team to a 7-'7 tie with Fran Thomson turning in a sterling defensive effort. The following Saturday, North met the future Class B champs, .MQ N iw Coach Donahue Winchester, and bowed 26-14 after a bitter struggle. In this game North unleashed a devastating passing attack in the person of Jack Crowley and his two big ends, Doug Gruteh- field and Al Adams. The Raiders broke into the win column with a crushing 26-6 defeat of the New Bedford VVhalers in preparation for the big game with Hingham. Turning in their peak perform- ance of the year, the men from North squeezed out a 13-12 victory over a strong Hingham squad. Ed Coughlan, Ralph Frazier, Willie Wanless, Babe Sweeney, and John Huber were all top performers in the line to bottle up Hingham's attack. At this time a rash of injuries to such big players as Paul Payson, Larry McGee, John Huber, Bob Dixon, Jack Cooke, Bob Mann, and Red Thomson wrecked havoc with the whole squad. Facing an unenviable task of playing such opponents as arch rivals lVIilton, Natick, Braintree, and Quincy, Coach Donahue switched Jack Crowley and George Doring to halfback and slipped Tookus Deane in at quarterback. Struggling against such overwhelming odds, the team slid to defeat before Milton 20-0, Natick 28-6, Braintree 25-6, and the Turkey Day rival, Quincy, 44-20. Although losing, North piled up as many points as any other North squad has ever done. PAUL R BRENNAN BEVERLY A. BURDEN D.
