The members of the 1951 Alanet Staff wish to tlzank all those who helped to make this yearbook possible. We acknowl- edge our debt to Afiss Ufilina Schields for her wisdom in the establishing of sound policies. for her sympathetic understanding of our problems, for her enthusiasm, but mostly for her insistence upon our accepting responsibility. From all of these, even in her absence, we benehted. To tUrs. Aliriam Schoenherr we owe a .special debt of grati- tude for her most generous and able assistance in behalf of our layout and art staffs. For their advice, for their sound business sense, and for their willingness to discuss with us our minutest problem we thank Mr. tllelvin .lack and Aliss Lillian Gormley. TfVe deeply appreciate the many services of Miss Alarion Sullivan and Miss Esther Morrison whose graciousness and good nature survived the interruptions and inconveniences thrust upon them. To every member of the Girls' Club and to its advisers, Miss Helen Alelanson and Miss Alarion Sullivan, we, in behalf of the Senior Class, offer our gratitude for a most generous act: materially reducing the cost of each yearbook by donating the profits of the hrst performance of their benefit show. IfVe feel that our advertisers are our friends: surely they have demonstrated over a period of many years their faith in us and their loyal support of the Alanet. Greetings and best wishes to all members of the Class of '51.' This particular year brings us to the turning point at midcentury and confronts us with perplexities and problems heretofore un- known. The challenge presented by this most important situation is undoubtedly greater than one can possibly imagine and should induce the greatest conceivable effort in sound preparation for a well-established future. Such security comes to those who accept this challenge and to those who possess genuine faith and a will to preserve and pro- mote our democratic ideals to as great an extent as can be realized. I am confident that this Class will measure up to its proper stature in the years ahead and merit its place of honor and dis- tinction in bringing peace, prosperity, and happiness to the world. llmlrlis S. Our thanks go especially to you, John, not only for your tireless planning and constant effort to make our class a success, but also for your bright personality and sincere friendship which make you our most worthy class president. Thanks also go to the Dance Committee which, under John Murray's leadership, sponsored several financial and entertaining successes. YVho will ever forget them: the dreamy Autumn Nocturne, the fanciful Snowdrift, and the other gay dances enlivened by the romantic melodies of the Harmoniers? A vote of appreciation must surely be given to .lim Black, who, with the members of the Prom Committee engineered the event which climaxed our last year at North, the Senior Prom. On the lighter side, another vote of thanks should be awarded to joe McGillicuddy for his efficiency in directing the activities of the Class Day plan- ning committee. To our other officers, Roseann Gilbody, Fletcher Partridge, and Jean Dun- lop, our elected vice president, treasurer, and secretary, goes our deep gratitude. But perhaps the two people who most deserve our appreciation for their guidance and sponsorship are Mr. Collins and Mr. Donahue. Yes, to every person who so unselfishly has given his time and effort to make our class of '51 a success, may we, as a class, say to all, Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. i97W ,, ..-. .,- ... ,,-fwaw-,.. .ang THE IUNICJR CLASS Guided by its officers, under the ever-inspiring Miss McCoy, the class of 1952 has made this year a memorable one. Its dances have proved to be even more popular than usual-remember Winter Prelude in November? And who can forget the Happy Holidays in December with Bob Clayton coming out from YVHDH to spin the disks? The class had its innovations too-the class rings with the ruby stones will probably set a precedent. And one of the most important things of all-the class has had a record year in the dollar department. Credit for all this and more goes to the class adviser, to the officers, and to the many class members who served on the necessary committees. Adviser, Miss McCoyg president, Robert Keayg vice president, Claire Shan- nong secretary, Judith Kraft, treasurer, Fred WVhittum. WW? .655 sENIoR STUDENT coUNc1L Wliat is that excited buzz coming from the physics lab? If it's Thursday, homeroom period, then it's certain to be the fourteen hard-working members of the Senior Student Council plus, of course, the equally hard-working adviser, Mr. Lyons. - The student representatives, who are elected from each grade by propor- tional representation, conduct such worthy and excess-cash-absorbing projects as the Community Chest Drive and the March of Dimesg attempt to plan assem- blies designed to suit the tastes of some six hundred students fand teachersjg discuss such eternal problems as the cafeteria, devise a system for improving traffic and automobile problemsg and sponsor popular social affairs like the annual Christmas dance, St. Nick's Mix, and a roller skating party. Such varied topics constitute discussion matter for a typical student council meeting. Adviser, Mr. Lyons, president, Sally Ann Kennedyg vice president, Richard Robertsg secretary, Patricia Dwyer: and treasurer, joan Caporal. ww THE NATIGNAL I-IONCR SOCIETY As a reward for outstanding scholarship, service, leadership, and character a group of students is accepted each year into the North Quincy High School chapter of the National Honor Society. In the present era of conlusion, there is an ever growing need for people to get together, and by uniting for a common purpose, to further the way of life in which they believe. By constantly trying to improve our country's educational system, the National Honor Society has helped greatly in making us realize the value of our way of life. This organization is most instrumental in waking us up and getting us to thinking. Its annual competitive scholarship stimulates enthusiasm inside the society, and the impressive induction ceremony contains a lasting message lor all who witness it. Never before has such an organization been so important to us, and it is hoped that the members of the National Honor Society will go through life building upon the fine accomplishments they have achieved in high school. Adviser, Miss Horrigang president, James Blighg co-vice presidents, Eliza- beth Croumey and janet Anderson: secretary, Ann Robertsg treasurer, Richard Cushing. if-llil-I IHK , 'E 'ji' 'ff , :Q 43 1f:..'.1.:+ Q18 i ,f,..,,,., GIRLS' SPCDRTS Say, the Celtics should hire women! Such a comment is not surprising if you've seen the girls in action. Gur gym seems to be bursting with enthusiastic feminine S1DO1'tStC1'S. Some play basketballg others prefer badminton, ping pong, volleyball, or even softball, in season. The girls are from the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. Their interest is the foundation of the club. There are no officers, no dues, and no strict rules and regulations to be followed. Instead, the girls, numbering about one hundred, have created the club for enjoyment and recreation. They have sensed the keen thrill of competition. Miss McCoy, the ever competent adviser, feels that the spirit of any organization is the most important part. Certainly, there is spirit in the girls' sports organization. Adviser, Miss McCoy. go all in if - CHEERLEADERS Almost every girl has, at one time or another, said to herself, Gee! I wish I were a cheerleader! But this unsuspecting little daydreamer doesn't realize that the cheerleaders job isn't everything it's made out to be. It's a lot of hard work. Almost any afternoon at practice such exclamations as 'KOh! my achin' back! and No, that's not right! Let's try it again. can be heard. But the girls come through with Ilying colors, and we, the spectators, see only the skill and agility with which they go through their routines. Can anyone imagine a football game without The Pyramid or a basketball game without The Beam ? Of course not! So let's all give three cheers for Ann Richards, Bernadette Hannon, Emily Newcomb, Alice Vincent, Judith Marr, Barbara YVhelton, .lane Mitchell, and Jayne jackson. They deserve them! Adviser, Mr. Forest, head cheerleader, Ann Richards. FUTURE l-ICMEMAKERS OF AMERICA You're having a party? You don't know what to do about serving re- freshments? Go down to 126 and ask F. H. A. for help. They'll be glad to help out. Oh, and be sure to get some ribbon sandwiches! Does this sound familiar? Almost everyone, including the faculty, has at one ti1ne or another tasted that delicious F. H. A. food and found it satisfying. And then the coffee hour during Education Week won some more friends for the club. Fun with food is also a primary function of F. H. A. After the hilarious pizza party each girl went away with a sinile on her face and a lot of delicious pizza tucked under her belt. Anyone who happened to saunter in on the night that the club supper was cooked suddenly found an apron tied around her waist and a paring knife in her hand. This year Geraldine Dowling and Jean Gordon, both seniors, were state president and state secretary respectively. Adviser, Miss Melansong president, Theresa Depreyg vice president, Carol Draheinig treasurer, Nancy Tibbetts: secretary, Carolyn Marks. ...gf x O I i ' V , g :,'L',,. f Q. U. , R , .. I L X ,. Those frank- lurts were just delicious. Remember when we were all climbing over those rocks looking for moss? I can just feel the results now! Have you heard about the famous scientists in our midst? They broad- casted on the radio last month about their white rat project. You should have heard them: they sounded so dignified. l'll meet you out infront of school at eight, sharp, next Saturday morning! VVe want to take advantage of that low tide to collect a lot ol' specimens along Wollastoxi Beach. If you have heard any ol' these above remarks, you can be sure a member of North's popular Biology Club was speaking. Adviser, Miss Schields: president, Frances Crowley: vice president, Dorothy Young: secretary, Barbara Mahoney: treasurer, Marianne Maguire. GLEE CLUB There are many people who graduate from North whose happiest memories revolve around Room 402 and Glee Club. X'Vhy?-because music is fun! Glee Club means many things to its members: it means being with folks who have interests in commong having the opportunity to sing as a part of a successful group, in spite of the fact that the Met isn't too eager for their servicesg giving up things cheerfully to meet extra rehearsalsg feeling a wonderful sense of achievement after presenting a program before an audience. As usual, the Glee Club program was synonymous with the spirit of Christ- mas at North. Dressed in choir robes against the background of a stained glass window, the group made the rafters ring with the Hallelujah Chorus from The Messia 11. After the holiday season big plans were in the offing for participating in the Eastern Massachusetts Music Festival and for presenting the annual Spring Concert and Dance which has become an integral part of the organization's pro- gram. That one need not be a Lily Pons or a James Melton to join is perhaps the best feature of the Club. An audition proving ability to read musical notation and to carry a tune reasonably well makes one a bona Hde member. Every person is im- portant to the group. For an activity that provides enjoyment and satisfaction, it always has been and always will be Glee Club. The officers of the Glee Club are as follows: president, Wzilter McMasterg vice president, -lean Gordong secretary, Dorothy MacLeodg treasurer, Mlilliam Nlacliinning and director, Beatrice V. Fitts. NORTH STAR Few people realize what goes on behind the scenes in the publication of a high school newspaper. First, the editorial staff gathers the news, sorts the various stories, and chooses the most interesting and newsworthy articles. Often those contributions not used in one issue will be retained for the next one because of their merits. Following this, all the contributions go to Miss Youngerman whose able clerical staff does all typing. After the return of the typewritten material, the stafl' sets up or places the numerous articles in the proper spaces where they will appear most interesting. Thus, by means of a dummy the staff can easily visualize the finished product which is then sent to the printer. YVithin a few days one thousand North Stars are received at North and distributed to subscribers. Credit for the publication belongs to the entire staff composed of students from all grades at North who wish to try their hand at journalism. Adviser, Mr. Laing, editor-in-chief, Robert Richardson: advertising man- ager, Margaret Gervasig circulation manager, Grace Reagan. .s Q52 SKETCI-l CLUB The 150 members of the Sketch Club play a very important part in school life. Any art project such as posters lor dances, room display subjects, or illus- trations for literature, this nimble-fingered crew is ready to tackle. As usual the backdrop for the annual Music Department Christmas assem- bly was the work of this club. The beautiful stained glass windows provided fitting backgrounds for the loyely Christmas carols and The Messiah. XVhen the time for the Junior Red Cross International Art Contest came, all of these artists eagerly entered hoping to capture a prize. The Sketch Club also makes menu folders for veterans' hospitals and place cards for various committee dinners as service to the school. Adviser, Miss Sawitskyg president, James Blackg vice president, .Ioan Simmons: president, Roberta Hayes: treasurer, Phyllis Petreikis. ' TPC! - fha. NURSES' CAREER CLUB What's going on?' Someone sick? Certainly not. All that excitement issuing from the Health Service Room every first Friday ol the month merely registers the interest and enthusiasm ol several young aspirants to the gentle art of nursing. Naturally they concern themselves with first aid and with schools ol nursing as well as with their own aptitudes and qualifications for meeting the exacting requirements ol the best schools. lfVhy wouldn't a movie portraying the duties of a nurse, and speakers from different fields of nursing provide them with necessary background? How could they help enjoying, as guests of the first year hospital students, an extensive tour of the living quarters and classrooms ol' the Quincy City Hospital and an informal talk by Miss O'Gara, Director ol' the School of Nursing? With so much being done lor them, they would want to reciprocate by a little service ol their own: buying, at Christmas time, toys, games, and clothing for a needy family. The first few weeks were spent in setting up the range and in acquainting the new members with the intricacies of the guns Qsome of the newcomers acted as if the guns were about to bite themj. Then the regular schedule of weekly meetings went into full swing. Before the Christmas vacation, the team was privileged to move over to the Squantum School, where a larger and better-equipped range was available. One of the team's long awaited honors, letters for the girls who qualify in a certain number of matches, has been approved this year, and the girls are cer- tainly proud that they may finally wear an N for Rifle participation. As in the past, the club engaged in a great deal of outside competition. Each month the members fired at targets, the scores of which were entered in the National Postal Matches at XVashington, D. C. Since the results were then compared with those from every part of the United States, they were anxiously awaited. The big Rifle matches with Quincy, Malden, Melrose, lVakefield, Ran- dolph, and Braintree provided the team with a chance not only to match its skill with the greats of the other teams, but also to leave school early. The club has spent one ol' its busiest years in rendering service in assemblies and in augmenting teachers pro- grams by the use of teaching aids: slides, Iilmstrips, movies, and wire recorders. The various facilities have been widely used in the classroom. The fact that the aggregate number of pupils benenting from the services amounted to 25,000 dur- ing the year testines to this. Each of the club members has spent many long hours throughout the en- tire year in developing this hobby. The resourcefulness and ingenuity ol the operators are constantly being tested whenever any kind of difliculties is encoun- tered. FOGTBALL Although North had one of the smallest squads in numbers in the history of North Quincy football, Coach Donahue's Red Raiders of 1950 turned in some outstanding performances that will not soon be forgotten. Difficulties in scheduling games did not add to North's chances of success. However, practice day after day paid off as North dug in to prepare for the big game each Saturday. After losing the opener to Braintree by a score of 25-O, North bounced back and handed Dedham a defeat to the tune of 8-6. This was one of Northls best- played games of the season. In the next game, North pitted its strength and skill against X'Veymouth and did a creditable job by scoring two touchdowns against the Class A State Champions. After the final whistle in the game against Norwood the Raiders walked off the field with a 13-6 victory. The plague of all coaches, injuries, took its toll among the key men in the line-up. North dropped its next two games by identical scores of 31-13 against Milton and Cambridge Latin. The next task for Coach Donahue and his team was that of turning their attention to the annual game against Quincy. In one of the hardest fought and best played games, the Raiders from the north and the Blue and YVhite were all even at the half. However, a lack of reserves began to take effect in the third and fourth period as Quincy scored three touchdowns. In spite of the fact we lost by a score of 20-0, the game will be remembered because of the all-out performance of the team. The Red Raiders were captained by Dean Larson, who combined his ability in signal calling with his fighting spirit in sparking the team in its offensive drives. Others who turned in outstanding performances in the backheld were Bill McKinnon, Dan Mahoney, Paul Deane, Tom Radley, Doug McLeod, and Bob Tufts. In the line, North found its Rock of Gibraltar in All-Scholastic tackle 'loin Neville, who played an outstanding game all year and ended up with an excellent showing against Quincy. The ends ol' the line were played by dependable players in Bill Seller, Bud McMasters, and .foe Mcfiillicuddy. The others who opened up the holes for the backfield and stopped the opposition's drives were George Nestor, 'lim lliliona, Ralph Ryan, Bob Miller, Bob Benson, 'john XVhite, and ,lint lloyle. The lflhll squad was one which, in spite of the fact il did not have the best record in history, never gave up until the final whistle. 19370 3 mm, ' ' fyx A y in is, A tg, BASEBALL Since baseball is our national sport, it is natural for us to get a little of that baseball fever each year around spring vacation time. However, this fever has a more noticeable effect on the group of fellows who eventually make up the North Quincy nine. Usually during April vacation, practice begins. Loosening up that stiff arm and getting back that old eye takes a good deal of time and lots of hard work. But all this toil seems well rewarded when it results in an interest- ing and exciting season. North can always be proud of the boys who make up the baseball team. All you have to do is watch one game and you can't help noticing the interest, ability, and good sportsmanship of all our players. It is this valuable experience in the fundamentals of competitive sports which proves to be a great help to these boys as they go on to their life's work. W'ith all the thrill of the great game of baseball we realize that it is one of our most important high school activities and has that extra attraction of being our national sport. lflfffffl Wiw mm ...W . Remember the picnic at Faxon Park and how it was postponed three times that day and finally held anyway? Despite the cloudy weather hot dogs were never tastier and girls never merrier. At the height of the football season we had an informal dance, Touclirlown Tzmzble. Back- boards. decorated with figures of football players, clrum-majorettes, cheerleaders and streamers of red and black, provided atmosphere for a real sport's dance, The Girls' Club also renders service. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons we col- lected canned goods to help many needy people in Quincy. No one realizes what a hectic time we had back stage at the Christmas assembly! Mlith a mini- mum of rehearsing and a maximum of good luck the department store scenes were a success: angels in the store windows tried so hard to look holy: dolls when wound up danced nimbly and delight- fully: girls modeled snowsuits, wool dresses. coats and beautiful evening gowns: and jolly Santa with bashful little girls and boys concluded the program by inviting everyone to join in singing Christ- mas carols. Immediately we plunged into more problems. My mother really enjoyed watching me serve. She thinks the library staff is wonderful, teaching me how to be a good hostess as well as a library assistant. The magazine room fascinated my motherg it is so small she couldn't see how we found anything in there. She should be around some nights when there's a rush on for back issues! It probably does look hard to someone who has never done any work like this. Remember the first time we had to check in books? I was all thumbs at first trying to find the right cards, but I soon caught on. Putting away books in the social studies room floored me. All those people dashing in in the morning left us swamped with books until at least 8:30. ll you think there were a lot of people in there, you should have been giving out slips some mornings. The library certainly is a popular place to study in! I know it! XVhen we entertained the library staffs of other schools in January, all our guests thought that ours is really a pleasant library. lust think, we work during study periods, too, filling teachers' book orders, putting away books and magazines. I certainly wouldn't have missed a minute ol' this year's activity. A group of students approved by their English teachers forms the Library Book Recommendation Committee, the purpose of which is to recommend books to be purchased for the school library. At the first meeting Miss Sherman explains just what the group is expected to do. Then the members are introduced to the various book reviewing sources such as Saizzrday Rezfiezu of 1,I'f6l'lIl'lH'6', New York Herald Trilizme Books, and Book Review Digest. During a six-week period each member reads and browses through these sources, finally choosing a book that may be a suitable addition to the library. After reading his book, the student is required to write a report judging the merits of the book according to standards which have been set up at a previous meeting. Aside 'from the lact that the participants get credit for two book re- ports, the pupils realize that they are making a direct contribution to one of the most important and worthwhile phases ol' school life. Well, we've been waiting here since 6:30 this morning to see this Turkey Day game, and I suppose we might as well wait a bit longer. Let's have a bit of that blanket over here, I'm -hey, what's that? It looks as if the drill team and drum majorettes are ready to come on the field leading the band. i Well, so it is! Here they come! lsn't that Corrine Jackson leading the majorettes? Yes, and 'Ioan Perley's leading the drill team. Say, didn't Miss McCoy do a good job in teaching the girls their stuilg look at the way they high step and twirl their batons. What are they doing now? Oh, I see, the band is starting to form the letters NQ on the field and the girls are going over to the Quincy side of the stadium to put on a demonstration. W7here's Corrine going now? I'll bet she's going to try to throw her baton over the goal post and catch it. I've never seen her miss this one yet. There she goes . . . Hurray! She made it! Now it looks as if the girls are getting ready to move off the field and let the Quincy High band and drum majorettes take over for a while. Hey! Sit down in front! Come on, give us just one end ol' that blanket. Adviser, Miss McCoyg head drum majorette, Corrine Jackson, head ol drill team, 'loan Perleyg assistants, Nancy Whittemore and Jean Sangster. 'Ka e.i..,.,,J i BAND School rallies wouldn't have the same colorg football games would lose part of their appealg that lamed North spirit would lack its characteristic zest without-yes, you guessed it,-without the Band. You'11 remember the Band of 1950-51 because it was an integral part of school life. Remember when you looked down from your classroom window? XfVhile you were absorbing knowledge, the Band was practicing marching lor the game Saturday. Boy, did you wish you were in the band then! But on Sat- urday, you weren't so green-eyed. You knew that you would much rather be in the stands as a spectator than on the Held as a performer. And then you recall that at the Christmas assembly the group proved it could do more than play marches: it could make a Bach chorale sound as Mr. Bach had intended his music to sound. Yes, this Band was versatile. You heard it perform concert music, as well as marches, at its own band concert which was presented in February. The group also participated in the Eastern Massachusetts Music Festival, a tradition in Band history at North. The North spirit will always survive as long as there is a band as good as the Band of 1950-51. On the contrary, members of this club who have enjoyed a series of movies, speakers, and trips can testify to its being one of the most fascinating subjects in the curriculum. Among the speakers were Mr. Richard Cain, who illustrated his talk on his European travels with slides of Buckingham Palace, Westiriixister Abbey, the Arch of Triumph, the Eiffel Tower, and St. Peter's Cathedralg and Miss Ella XVilcox, whose colored pictures of Chinese, japanese, and Indian scenes trans- ported her audience, in spirit at least, to the Orient. And to round out the travels, Miss Mabel Pratt took the club on a Kodachronie tOL11' of Mexico, contrasting the old with the new in a way which couldn't fail to arouse an understanding of the culture of our neighbor to the south. On April 153 the History Club sponsored a Latin American assembly in recognition of Pan American Day. In May, the members visited Plymouth Rock, the John Alden House, and Pilgrim Museum, and, on the way home, they stopped at Miss Pratt's Hanson camp for the traditional picnic supper, drawing the curtain on another profitable and pleasant year of the History Club. Estamos muy bien, graciasf' Does this sound and look like Spanish to you? VVell, it is, and you can hear it almost any time there's a Spanish Club meeting. Talking about everyday happenings in an every-day way in Spanish makes the language more fun and much easier to learn. Language is not the only emphasis in the club programg culture and cus- toms are stressed too, evidenced by the most interesting and attractive room display. Fiesta , a thoroughly Spanish dance at which matadores, picadores, toreadores, and many other Spanish characters could be found, was a huge success. It was strange to see lovely senoritas and dashing caballeros dancing in what looked amazingly like our gym, except for the Mexican touches here and there. A Mexican hayride and a picnic climaxed the year quite successfully, dem- onstrating to all that the Spanish Club is a recreational club as well as an educa- tional one. Please don't make me get up on the stage. l'll die! This expression annually warms the hearts of many cruel, cold-blooded girls as they launch the year's Tri-Hi-Y activities by putting the new-comers to the club through the rough and ready paces of initiation. Everyone has a good time, though, and who can think of a better way to get things started than by making a girl walk in front of a roomful of people with hot dogs dangling from her ears and a foot- ball uniform draped over mother's nightgown? As time goes on, however, the club's schedule doesn't prove quite so em- barrassing to these unsuspecting victims, and all the activities are planned to follow the main purpose of the club-to establish a better soul, mind, and body in each girl. Occasional movies are shown, both for education and for pleasure. One or two splash parties, that always leave the mermaids exhausted but re- freshed, are held: and, if the boys can be coaxed out of a corner long enough, a record hop is enjoyed once in a while. And, of course, the event that really tops off the year for eight of the forty-five members is the Tri-Hi-Y national conven- tion held at some well-known city. Amidst a weekend of everything from lectures to dancing, everyone has a good time. XVhy yes, I really enjoyed myself at the Older Boys' Conference last Decem- ber. Out in Hfestfield where the Conference was held, we participated in a three- day program of attending conferences, hearing speakers, and joining in various forms of recreation all of which emphasized the application of Christian principles in high school, in the community, in social life, and in character building. My stay there was one of the events in my life that I shall never forget. I understand that next week we are going to have a record hop with the Tri-Hi-Y girls. That ought to be fun . . . That's right, this week is the beginning of the Hi-Y courtesy campaign that is supposed to run through the rest of the year. It was suggested by Mr. Simpson. Some class members will hail the end of twelve years' involuntary servitudeg others will claim the honor belongs to the soul-stirring graduation ceremoniesg more will support the awards assemblvg but the average senior will probably answer that it's the Senior Prom. Decorating the Armory, selecting the favors, hiring Baron Hugo's orchestra, distributing the invitations, and reserving Coral Gables for the traditional after- the-Prom banquet and dancing-all resulted from the industry of the Prom Committee, headed bv Jim Black. Excitement runs high as the teams compete against one another, and top score is well worth all the aches and pains it causes on the following day. Evidence of the enthusiastic support that is given to the Bowling Club is presented by several of its high scoring members, one of whom is Marilyn Marr. a member of the 300 Pin Club Qentrance requirements being an average ol 90 or over for three stringsj and the Century Club Qa score ol' 100 or better lor a single stringj. JVM BASKETBALL The 1951 edition of North Quincy basketball team was one that brought out an, almost entirely new squad for Coach Mullarkey to build. lfVith only four seniors and one returning letter man, Mullarkey molded his team into a well- balanced quintet which showed improvement in every game it played. In captain Gus Cuneo, North had a dependable floor player who was the key of the scoring attack. He turned in several stellar performances during the past season. The other seniors who aided in North's attack were Earl Tufts, Fletch Partridge, and Ken Lang. The rest of the squad was made up of eight juniors who showed improvement as the season progressed. Among those who showed the most promise and who played well this year were Freddie Campbell, Buddy Frye, Dan Mahoney, and Bob Murphy. Other juniors who turned in well-played games when called on were Bobby Tufts, Bob Benson, Joe Cataldo, and Ray Gillis. XVith several returning veterans next year, North will probably have a team that will make up an outstanding record. Only these members can really know the skill and -stamina required in a good match, or the exacting task of keeping score, or the calling of shots which are too near the tape for comfort. This year's schedule crowds eleven contests into approximately Hve weeks. A busy season like this is something all participants will remember. Although there are no cheering crowds watching each match, the members of the tennis team get real satisfaction from one of the finest sports there is. L9 GOLF This year marks the nineteenth consecutive year in which North has been represented by a golf team. On two occasions, the Raiders' goll team won the State Championship and on two other occasions finished in the runner up spot. Qlhroughout l950 the golf team participated in seventeen contests in which it was victorious in lourteenlj Coach -lack Donahue was handicapped this season by the lack ol' returning veterans. He had only two boys around which to build his squad, the two being Captain Dan McNeice and John Mundie, both experienced in the sport. North's schedule began in April and included matches with Brockton, XValpole, Norwood, Taunton, Needham, Hingham, Dedham, and, ol' course our traditional rival, Quincy High School. .SJ0lfl,fA .Salaam Cizamlniona HOCKEY The 1950-1951 North Quincy hockey team, undismayed by lack of local ice, was the best in the school's history. Captain Dick Gallagher led a well in- tegrated squad whose success could be mainly attributed to its thorough coaching and team work. Pallie Murray and George McNeill, who were voted the South Shore League's outstanding defensemen, helped MacKenzie, Croke, McNeice, Paige, and Forrest combine with Gallagher to provide the points, while Bugs Bergamo kept the defensive goals clear. Even while the squad was clinching the South Shore Hockey League Cham- pionship, coach Dave Hourin was looking forward hungrily to entering the team in the Metropolitan play-offs. ' Witli Hurley returning in the mile, Tom Sullivan and Dave Gibson in the hurdles, Stan Clark in the high jump, Tom Neville and Bill MacKinnon in the dash, and Bill Seller in the shot put, back from last year's Division II champions in the Metropolitan League, prospects appeared bright. However, because of the loss of some top men by graduation and because of the light turnout this year, the undermanned squad was not expected to match last year's record. Mainly because of the improvement in a group of newcomers, including Dave Hurley, Joe McDaniel, Richard Roberts, Vin Miller, and others, and be- cause of the record-shattering performances of the veterans, North again found itself in possession ol the Division ll trophy with an undefeated record in league competition. Coach Gerry Lyons' first spring track team, with the experienced boys in top form, and the first year men having gained experience and confidence, ap- peared capable of extending the fine record achieved by his first indoor team.
