The hidden spirit in NPHS was renewed as a result of encouragement from the Student Council, as they organized a poster party. Students from all three classes enthusiastically prepared decorations for the three floors. At the traditional Powder Putt football game, once again the seniors domi- nated with victories over the juniors and sopho- mores. Students hunted all over town for two weeks collecting boxes for the annual bonfire, which took place after the girls' game. Color day itself was evi- dent in the halls and clas- rooms .as faculty and stud- dents decked themselves out in blue and gold. Although the night was cold and windy, the spirit was still around during the car caravan and Home- coming bout. UPPER: Sophomores spray paint this sign for the decoration of third floor dur- ing the poster party. Even though Aus- trailians speak English, I couldn't understand any- one because the dialect and accent is so different! My school was a state school and uniforms were worn by everyone. I began wearing my blue skirt, white blouse, and school sweater, and found out P X..-J how simple it made things. Living in another country has helped me to realize many things about my own country, which has an important role in world affairs. As citizens of the U.S., we are very fortunate to live in a free world - we don't have the right to do as we please but we do have the liberty to do as we ought. Kim Holm l can hardly believe how nice and outgoing all you guys are. There were quite a few things different here, but after l got used to cer- tain habits I enjoy it very much around here. l'Il never forget any of you l've gotten to know. Thanks a lot for making my adjust- ment so easy. Silvia Cpictured with Wanda Borchersj My experiences here are good. l'm learning many things such as the respon- sibility l have representing my country here. l have an opportunity to be here to learn your customs and language. This will help me when l return to Brazil. On different days of the week, students came to school in their favorite T-Shirts, with their clothes on inside out, as well as their favorite sport outfit. Awards were given to the best dressed in each category at the Spirit Assembly. During the week the girls' basketball team was victorious over Ogal- lala, but the boys were cut short in a close game with Kearney. Despite the loss, students displayed pride and spirit throughout the whole game. Following the game, a homecoming dance sponsored by Stu- Co, was attended by many students. Sometimes we are so preoccupied with what will come that we overlook what is now. During the year, the Jun- ior Class had the best deco- rated floor during Color Week. Looking ahead, we see new surroundings as we will be the first graduating class to use the enlarged facility. Although discontented with the prospect of no Open Campus, we look for- ward to the coming year and its events. 435 A Wx U tt 'g tl za ' I I '03 , V H I i..- ir V' , K V -,- W . Juniors 69 l Sophomores' lives filled with anticipation. l After anticipating high school for a long time, sophomores found new experiences both challeng- ing and troublesome. Anticipation came again during the year as the issues of open campus and a larger school prevailed. Disappointment was expressed with the open campus issue because of the possibility it would not exist next year. Sophomores can now anticipate being next year's juniors and, . . . it'll soon be here. 254, M ' ,, , lxf,...- .V 'T ll .- ttf Q. . The girls, weakened by their lack of height and experience, ended the season with three wins to their credit. The spikers failed to make it to State, but took a respectable third place finish at Districts. On a won-loss basis it was a real disappointing season, but everyone was willing to work hard and to strive to improve. Because of those two things, we weren't losers, said Coach Linda Carlson as she described the young but persistent members of the varsity volleyball team. Sports 91 Bulldogs hindered b lack of experience The North Platte Bulldog football team went into the 1977 gridiron season with a young but enthusiastic squad. The Bulldogs had fourteen returning lettermen, with seven of them seeing starting action in previous years. Hampered by their lack of size and experience, the Bulldogs fell to all but two of their opponents. ' With new faces in the offensive line and defensive secondary, the Bulldogs faced Lincoln East in their season opener. The Bulldog's fine defensive backfield could not stop the Spar- tan attack andthe Bulldogs fell O-32. Mid-season came and with it came the BulIdog's first victory as North Platte downed Alli- ance in a hard fought battle. North Platte's second win came against Scottsbluff as the Bull- dogs trounced the Bearcats 29-14. Jeff Castle and Marty Thalken, senior co-captains, were named to the West Big Ten All- Conference team. Thalken was also named the outstanding football letterman. After the team captured the District crown at Beatrice, nine gymnasts qualified for the State Tournament in Lincoln where the North Platte Bulldogs were runner-up. We started slow, due to injuries, but as the season went on it go bet- ter, Coach Ben Barends said. The team finished the regular season with a 1-6 dual record defeating Ogal- lala. The Bulldogs improved in Invitational action and succeeded in winning some individual titles. At the Kearney Invi- tational they finished sixth and at Lexington they placed fifth. Still improving their showing, at the Spar- tan lnvitational, they took second place. At Trans- Nebraska, the grapplers finished in third place and had three first place medal- ists Jeff Castle, Marty Thalken, and Jim Stewart. Next action was the Big Ten meet where the team placed eigthth. Concluding the season at the District meet, they made their best showing of the season. Mark Fiedler and Eugene Stevenson were both District Champi- ons as well as Jim'Stewart, who lost an overtime deci- sion to take second place. This meet also qualified five wrestlers to go on to the state meet in Lincoln. They were Mark Fiedler, Jim Stewart, Marty Thalken, all seniors, and Randy Rasmussen and Eugene Stevenson, both juniors. The only person to place at the state meet was Jim Stewart for third place, wrestling at 98 pounds. For the number of wres- tlers we had at state we could have done better and should have placed higher than we did, Barends commented. Our season was pretty good consider- ing the competition in this district and that there are only five wrestlers with var- sity experience. Team captains for the 1978 season were Jeff Castle, Mark Fiedler, and Marty Thalken. The fastest pin of the season was by Jim Stewart in 33 seconds. Sports 113 irl g mnasts hmdered b mexpertence Starting its third year under its third coaching staff, the girls gymnastics team was hindered by inexperience. When the pro- gram is young and the team is young, many mistakes are made. Our win-loss record was not fantastic, but the experience the younger members of the team received will show up in the years to come, Coach Rich Rei- nert commented. The top scorers for the season were Beth Jording on the vault and uneven parallel bars, D'Nae Spencer on the beam, and Angie Greco on the floor exercise. Beth Jording went to the state meet competing on the vault, but did not get into the finals. D'Nae Spencer was the strongest all- around competitor. LeAnn Schwindt, senior, and Angie Greco, junior, were the captains for the 1978 season. Coach Rei- nert was assisted by Mrs. Linda Anderson. Bulldog of the Month, an award given to an outstanding boy or girl of that month, was chosen by a com- mittee consisting ot two Stu- dent Council members, the president of each class, three faculty members, and Mr. Sed- lacek and Mr. Roth. The awards were announced at the monthly school board meetings and each winner was given a watch. To help promote spirit at the basketball games, Student Council set up The Spirit Club. Any student could belong. All that was required was to buy a blue and gold T- shirt inscribed with North Platte High School and sit in a certain section. Student Council sponsored two movies Earthquake and Tommy , homecoming and Color Week, hosted the District Convention with St. Pat's, and sponsored one bus to an out-ot town game. They also bought a Cardiopulmonary resuscitation dummy for classes next year. Four scholarships of S250 were given to Mike Alexander, Jim Grabouski, Kim Holm, and DeeJo Madison. She stays with the circus and falls in love with the magician, Marco the Magnificent CMark Synovecj, who does not return her love but leads her on. Rosalie CSusan Axthelmj, Marco's assistant, and Marco find that working with each other has built a strong relationship, and they leave the circus for a betterlife. . Yesterdafs gone, yesterdafs gone, As the school year begins, we contemplate things to come, as it ends, we look back on things that have happened. Graduat- ing seniors look forward to college, jobs, and other goals for their future. Underclassmen look for- ward to a combination of the two schools into one and a schedule and credit change.
