busy planners hoard of education memliers frank mc kain. nicholas chick. charles mc cartv. carson young. sam snell. and orvil kuhlmann pause during a busy meeting. they chart our eourseg north platteis hoard of education again had a busy year during the l95T-l952! school term. some of the numerous duties and obligations taken care of by the board this year were: determining school policies. approving the selection and salaries of teachers. setting up the annual lmudget. approving all claims for hills. and seeing that all students receive complete. modern. and democratic education. every public school in our citv receives the consideration of the school board and within the last eight years. the increase in enrollment has been so great that the hoard has lmeen faced with prohlems of classroom space. to compensate for this. many additions have lieen made to the grade schools in the city and the classroom space at junior high has lween increased. the hoard is still considering lvuilding plans in order to give our system complete and modern facilities. most publicized of the lioardis activities was the promotion of the proposed university of nelmraska extension center in north platte. dr. nicholas chick has headed the hoard this year with sam snell serving as vice president. carson young keeps the minutes of the meetings as secretary. other mem- lmers of the lmoard include frank mc kain. charles mc carthv. and orvil kuhlmann.

otto oakes these guide our Way ernest horacek. principal of north platte high school. is shown with his secretary. la rae brandt atteberry, administering some of the many duties and responsibilities that go with his office. claiming his attention is the administration of finances and the supervision of all school dances. parties. and activities. such as games and plays. mr. horacek. who obtained degrees at both nebraska state teachers college at peru and the university of nebraska. works with parents on discipline and academic problems and is always available to help smooth out problems between students and faculty or for consultation with students on various problems. mr. horacek will always be remembered for his enthusiastic drive and fine ideals for sportsmanship and school spirit. otto oakes. superintendent of the north platte school system since 19-18. when he moved here from kearney where he was principal of kearney high school. has given much time and personal effort towards improve- ment of the system. his many res onsibilities, su ervisin all school em- . U P H P s ployees. seeing that the buildings and grounds are properly maintained. giving advice to students and teachers. and advising the school board on suggested chan es. are administered carefullv and ambitiouslv. g . . mr. oakes received his bachelor of arts degree at peru state teachers college and his master of arts de- gree from the university of denver. although he is always busy. his office is always open to anyone who wants to visit or discuss problems concerning the school. he is assisted by his secretary. mrs. fern peter- son. 1-.. ernest horacek mary hutton. vice principal of north platte high school and vocational guidance director. is shown at her main desk. where she is often found giving coun- sel or a helping hand to the students of nphs. in charge of attendance. registration. and countless other jobs. her office is always open to students at any time during the day and all remember her smile and cheery greeting. miss hutton received her a.b. at the university of nebraska and her m.a. at the university of wisconsin and the university of montana. mary hutton 9
