OAKES is busily looking over the schedule for some oncoming events. MR. OAKES, conductor of the NPHS Special, has given much time and effort to improving the city school sys- tem, He supervises oll school employees, sees that school buildings and grounds are properly maintained, suggests needed changes, and gives advice to teachers and students when needed. His responsibilities are fully and ambitiously car- ried out. Although he is extremely busy, he welcomes everyone to visit his office to discuss any problems con- cerning school. Mr. Oakes received his bachelor of arts degree at Peru State Teachers College and his master of arts de- gree from the University of Denver, Before coming to North Platte in l948, he was principal of Kearney High School in Kearney, Nebraska. l , ll Things Come Around.. -,...-rf ,ifv ..-1' lf' cs,ff 'a V' INTRIGUED by their new machine, the National Cash Register Check-Writ- ing machine, Mr. Oakes and his secretary, Mrs. Fern Peterson, make out a few monthly checks. 110- ERNEST HORACEK, principal of North Platte High School and Chief Engineer of the N.P.H.S. spe- cial, has many duties and responsibilities. Among these are supervising all school activities such as games, plays, dances, and parties, and administering the fi- nances of these activities. He observes how classes are conducted and taught by visiting the individual classrooms while the classes are in session. Mr. Horacek works with parents on discipline or academic problems and helps smooth out problems be- tween the teachers and students. He can always be re- membered for his enthusiastic drive for sportsmanship and school spirit. Mr. Horacek has obtained degrees at both Ne- braska State Teachers College at Peru and the Univer- sity of Nebraska. To Him That Will But Wait f 3'-2, AN I HELP YOU? She works with the students to help them plan their courses throughout their school years She is always glad to have students come in to her office and discuss their problems with her No matter what type of problem students may bring before her they can always remember her smile which has cheered up many sad faces. She received her A. B. at the University of Ne braska and her M. The Curious Savage was chosen for the l957 Senior Class Play. This was a comedy with a slightly tragic side written by John Patrick. We're Proud of Their Fighting Spirit The North Platte Bulldogs, behind the cap- able work of co-captains Jack Pickens and Mike Lesiak, ended their l956 varsity football sched- ule with three victories against six defeats on their all class A schedule. During the season the Bulldogs racked up l27 points compared to the opponents l84 points. Mike Lesiak Jack Pickens ln the scoring column, Jerry Johnson tallied 3l points to take top honors with Mike Lesiak and Dick Sebastian close behind with 30 points each. The Track and Field Being Their Specialty Forty-eight boys checked out thinclads for the North Platte High School 1957 track season. Track coach Bill McCowin,assistants C. J. Ku- bicek, Don Stroh, and Roscoe Tolly built the squad around the I2 returning lettermen. They were: Rex Forrester, Neil Armstrong, Jerry Johnson, Jack Pickens, Mike Lesiak, Bill Lunkwitz, Bob Lynch, Jack Renfroe, Bill Coop- er, Ray Stevens, Scott Stanley and Ken Wills. The Bulldog thinclads took up their cleats on March l8th, and had final eliminations on March 27th. On March 30th, Scottsbluff's thinclads garnered 90 points and first place in the Scottsbluff relays for the eighth consecu- tive time. NP's cindermen managed l2 5 '7 points in two seconds, three fifths and a two way tie for third, fourth and fifth. Jack Pickens and Jerry Johnson were two top point getters for the Platters. Pickens sailed the discus l39 feet 5 inches for second and placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 42 feet l l inches. Johnson was second in the shot put with a heave of 47 feet 2 inches. He also was involved in the three way tie in the high jump with Rex Forrester. Jim Carter was fifth in the broad jump with a l9 foot 3A inch effort. The only home meet, the NP Invitational on April 5, was cancelled because of snow. Other meets held were McCook on April l2th, Kearney April l7th, Big Ten on April 26th, the District at Scottsbluff on May 3rd, and the State meet at Lincoln on May lOth.
