Franlf Cornwell. and George Luedlce, members ol fhe Board of Educafion. ln fhe hands of fhe members of fhe Board of Edu- cafion resf fhe decisions affecfing fhe schools in fhis communify. This year fhe Board vofed fo allow school dances fo be held in fhe Senior l-ligh School audiforium. These dances have been well affended by fhe high school sfudenfs and have proved a success. During fhe currenf school year a price of 50 cenfs was charged for a season ficlcef fo fhe dances and a charge of I5 cenfs was made for a ficlcef fo one dance. Nexf year sfudenfs owning acfivifies books will be able fo use acfivifies ficlcefs for admission fo fhe dances. A sfage was consfrucfed af fhe easf end of fhe cafeferia. This sfage is very convenienf fo use for programs, banquefs, and ofher such gafherings which are held in fhe cafeferia. lf is planned fo add curfains fo fhe sfage and fo place drapes af fhe cafeferia windows. The drapes will improve con- difions for showing movies in fhe cafeferia. L. W. Kinsman, confracfor, was in charge of fhe consfruc- fion of fhe sfage. The problem of securing an adequafe feaching force again faced fhe Board of Educafion during fhis year. A number of feachers resigned fheir posi- fions fo go info fhe service, fo do defense work, and fo feach in ofher cifies. These vacancies were all adequafely filled and a full feaching sfafl was refained. l-l. E. Day, presidenf of fhe Board of Educafion for a number of years, is refiring from fhe Board fhis year. Ezra Fisher was fhe only candidafe fo seelc Mr. Day's posifion. The Board of Educafion meefs fhe firsf Monday of each monfh. Many sfudenfs do nof realize fhe fime fhe men who are on fhe Board spend deciding whaf should be done for fhe besf inferesfs of fhe schools. In March fhe members of fhe Board decided fhaf mafhemafics, science, and English should be emphasized more because of fhe war. Boys enfer- ing fhe armed forces need fhese essenfial subiecfs. A sfraighf fen per cenf salary increase was granfed fo all feachers by fhe Board fhis year. The minimum salary for new feachers was increased. A bonus of a one hundred fiffy dollar War Bond was also granfed fhose feachers who remained for fhe year. The Board allowed fhe usual subsidy for fhe annual. I5
