SUPERINTENDENT W. J. BRAHAM During the school year 1941--12, the office of the superin- tendent has been a busy place. In addition to the regular duties of the office which include the secretarial work of the Board of Education and the administration of city schools, the superintendent, ably assisted by Miss Fern Breternitz, has been responsible for many other educa- tional and defense activities. A partial list of these activities is given herewith: bookkeeping for the North Platte School District Retire- ment Fundg check of system for the purchase of defense bondsg Civil Pilot Training classesg class in show card writingg class in blue print readingg four railroad em- ployees classesg N. Y. A. home making classesg classes in credits and retail selling. For about a year a class in aircraft sheet metal has been held, and recently a class has been organized in the operation, seryiceing and repair of gasoline engines. In this office data is now being secured to furnish a list of available homes for evacuee children. Mr. Braham enjoys making speeches, is thorough in work, makes selection of teachers, and enjoys a good game of golf. 20

DAY . . . president of the school board, fills flour sacks, an important task in the flour businessg he has operated the Day Milling Company for the past sixteen years . , . was graduated from high school at VVeeping Water, Nebraska . . . a member of the Board of Education for the past twelve years . . . bachelor of science degree from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska . . . has an exceptional personality . . . likes to joke and to hear funny stories. RUSSELL LANCFORD , . . secretary of board of education, checks a shipment of goods newly ar- rived at the Nash-Finch warehouse, Mr. Langford is company manager . . . was graduated from the North Platte High School . . . received his bachelor of arts degree from Stanford University . . . elected to the board in 1936 . . . reelected in 1939 . , . can boast a marvelous collection of arrowheads . . . enjoys his work on board and elsewhere. FRANK CORNWELL RUSSELL LANGFORD it if CARL GREISEN HAROLD D. WIESE . . . secretary of the Mutual Building and Loan Association, finds something of interest and amusement in a letter sent to him, while his secretary looks on . . . has served on the Board of Education since 1936 . . . reelected in 1939 . . . attended high school at Meadow Grove, Nebraska and the Lincoln Business College in Lincoln, Nebraska . . . hobby is fishing . . . marvel- ous speaker . . . vice president of the board. FRANK CORNWELL . . . owner and operator of Cornwell's Blacksmith and Welding Shop, welds a piece of metal with an acetylene torch . , . member of the Board of Education for two years . . . is an active member of the Parent Teacher's Association, Independent Order of Odd Fellows . . . on the Teacher's Committee of the board . . . well liked by everyone . . a very pleasing and well liked personality. CARL GREISEN . . . chief clerk of the Yard Office, checks correspondence at the Yard Office . . . member of the Board of Education for the first time this year . . . member of First Baptist Churchg president, Union Pacific Old Timersg American Legiong P. Our nation is at war-one of the most serious in history. From us as teachers and students is demanded the best of constructive citizenship. 'We must make wiser decisions based on careful study of facts and possible solutions. Sound scholarship and serious purpose are es- sential to victory. This will be more true of the peace which we sincerely hope will come. Men and women, technically trained and thoroughly disciplined will create a world democracy in which man can at- tain a higher degree of welfare and happiness. North Platte High School points with pride to former students Whose sound scholarship is now assert- ing itself. As time marches on, may the same feeling characterize those from the home school who will be watching you. Principal L. W. Nelson serves as trus- tee of the Presbyterian church, chairman of the state board of control of Nebraska high school activities association, mem- ber of Kiwanis club.
