FORMING POLICIES l'IXRlXt l li Ylllih After much study' and discussion the Pai ent-Teacher's Association committee, ap pointed on School Board recommenda tion, selected the Bell-Howell sound movie projector. The committee which spent much time on this study are Mrs. George McKown, Mrs. Vernon Kuhns, Van Shaw Miss Marie Schaab, and O. M. Friesen This projector has been used in assem blies, in classrooms and on the athletic field. Already the social studies, short hand, journalism, physics, American his tory, consumers problems, and chemistry classes have presented educational pictures and slides. A committee of teachers working with the Activities Board studied the qualities of various machines last year. About S400 was donated by school clubs and organiza tions to buy this projector. 18 9 With impoitant work facing them the Board ot Educ xtion settled down to a lot ot hard xyoik at the beginning of this school yeai The bofud has the duty of tormulatinff the policies to be tollovsed thioughout the city schools The duties ot the boaid includes the election of the superintendents of public schools and the appointment of teachers and janitois nom mated by the superintendent The members of the boaid receiye no pay for the work they do on the board Twelve iegular meetings are held each on the Iiist Wlonday of eyery month addition special meetings may be and are called when such occasions arise Among the importait xchievements for the school year in addition to the operat ing of a school sy stem employing 125 peo ple and instructing 3 000 students are these tangible items: the creation ot the North Platte School District Retirement Fund' Civil Pilot Training classes' class in blue print reading, N. Y. A. home making classesg class in show card writingg check of system for the purchase of defense bondsg four railroad employees classesg classes in credits and retail selling. Serving on the board in 1941-1942 are H. E. Day, president, Harold Weise, vice presidentg Russell Langford, secretaryg Carl Gresieng Ralph Selfg and Frank Corn- well, with NV. J. DAY HAROLD WIESE RALPH SELF . . . member of the Board of Edu- cation, sits in the back of the caboose while report- ing on his trip or writing trip reports after coming back from a trip on the Union Pacific Railroad . . . an active member of Union Pacific Old Timers, Masons, Eastern Star . . . serves on purchasing committee as part of his work on the board . . . a pleasing personality and gets along with everyone. H. E. DAY . . . president of the school board, fills flour sacks, an important task in the flour businessg he has operated the Day Milling Company for the past sixteen years . , . was graduated from high school at VVeeping Water, Nebraska . . . a member of the Board of Education for the past twelve years . . . bachelor of science degree from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska . . . has an exceptional personality . . . likes to joke and to hear funny stories. RUSSELL LANCFORD , . . secretary of board of education, checks a shipment of goods newly ar- rived at the Nash-Finch warehouse, Mr. Langford is company manager . . . was graduated from the North Platte High School . . . received his bachelor of arts degree from Stanford University . . . elected to the board in 1936 . . . reelected in 1939 . , . can boast a marvelous collection of arrowheads . . . enjoys his work on board and elsewhere. FRANK CORNWELL RUSSELL LANGFORD it if CARL GREISEN HAROLD D. WIESE . . . secretary of the Mutual Building and Loan Association, finds something of interest and amusement in a letter sent to him, while his secretary looks on . . . has served on the Board of Education since 1936 . . . reelected in 1939 . . . attended high school at Meadow Grove, Nebraska and the Lincoln Business College in Lincoln, Nebraska . . . hobby is fishing . . . marvel- ous speaker . . . vice president of the board. FRANK CORNWELL . . . owner and operator of Cornwell's Blacksmith and Welding Shop, welds a piece of metal with an acetylene torch . , . member of the Board of Education for two years . . . is an active member of the Parent Teacher's Association, Independent Order of Odd Fellows . . . on the Teacher's Committee of the board . . . well liked by everyone . . a very pleasing and well liked personality. CARL GREISEN . . . chief clerk of the Yard Office, checks correspondence at the Yard Office . . . member of the Board of Education for the first time this year . . . member of First Baptist Churchg president, Union Pacific Old Timersg American Legiong P. T. A., DeMolay Councilorg Masong Eastern Star . . . attended the public schools of North Platte, Nebraska.
