The year 1957 produced the greatest football team in the history of North Plainfield. Beginning with a 78-yard touchdown, the first play from scrimmage. the Canucks proceeded to win nine games in a row. with neither a loss nor a tie. win the Somerset County title. capture the Central Jersey Group II championship, and wallop their arch-rivals, South Plain- field, 33 to 19. The Canuck powerhouse met a tough opponent, Dover, in the opener for both teams. but ekcd out a win, 18 to 7. Scotch Plains played the un- happy host in the next North Plainhcld outing. as they were trounccd, 34 to 7. In the Somerset County opener, the team staged a thrilling come- from-behind win to nip Somerville, 21 to 19. Quickly in succession, the Canucks smeared Bound Brook 42 to 7, Bcrnardsville, 46 to 7. Nlanville, 51 to 19, and Westfield. 26 to 6. A highly touted battle ofthe titans shaped up as North Plainfield with seven wins and no losses and Cranford also with seven wins and no losses met at Canuck field, but Timer's men scored 27 points in the Hrst half and won easily, 40 to 8. The Canuck football team ended their perfect season at South Plainfield, beating them, 33 to 19.
