Page Thirty-seven CLHSS HISTCDRY By the first of September, the year '41 N. P. had received us, high school life had begun. Losing no time, we arranged our first election, Voted Mike De Vito presidential selection, Named Eddie Smith running mate to preside, And with Peg McGaffin as secretary rested, satisfied. Bill Krovatin, as treasurer, went after our cash And did a really splendid job with nary a clash. The months rolled by, and along came December- December, '41-a date we'll long remember. At a request from our government We shouldered the task Of learning our lessons and learning them fast. Thus days passed, and all too soon Iune was upon us, Doors opened, books closed, summer breathed on us. At the end of the summer we trooped back to school A wee bit wiser, no more responsive to rule. We found a new president in young Bob Caruso, Said we'd beat Plainfield, and actually did do so. Very shortly the spotlight was gained by Iohn Pellerano Who Wrote, staged, and directed a sophomore show In which, though reeking with talent surprisingly good, Epstein still starred, as only Epstein could. When March flew around, we held our first Tea Dance, But coax as we might, the boys wouldn't prance. By spring of that year the war'd begun to reach us With less gas, no tires, fewer teachers to teach us. And when every thing ended at summer's sweet season, Many found jobs for patriotic reason. Returning that fall to those who had taught us, We basked in the prestige two years had bought us. The presidency fell to the versatile Eppie. We added a supporting trio of peppy Co-workers-Haggart and Cole and Tovell by name, And most large was their bounty, if too small their acclaim Page Thirty-eight CLQSS HISTORY- Continued Our football team seemed to like the winning feeling, For they again beat the Cards and sent them back reeling. With Audrey Keiderling as chairman we purchased our class rings, 'Though this was but one of many exciting things. Our glorious Iunior Prom with Toe at its head Was a memorable night when few went to bed. The decorations were beautiful, and, needless to say, The Prom was N. P.'s finest in many a day. So-we came to the end of our third year in school And left, happy in thinking that as seniors we'd rule. When we returned in the fall of forty-four, We noticed a change upon ent'ring the front door. There in the office in the principal's place Sat someone new-yes, indeed, a new face! We soon learned to know and to like Dr. Bare, And as the year passed, We rejoiced he was there. Eppie, back in office, led us ably to the close, And it cannot be disputed that he kept us on our toes. As Student Council leader Bob Caruso served us well, Of his trials with Canuck Canteen only he alone can tell. Surpassing honor came to us in basketball this year When mounting tides of victory brought a grin from ear to ear As Coach, triumphant, held aloft the Central Iersey crown, A coronet that dazzles in any sportsman's town. Iohnny Pellerano in a burst of studied wit Decked the halls for merriment and staged the Yearbook Skit. With rollicking good humor and a fund of jokes galore The cast responded to a laughing school which laughed and laughed still more. The annual Senior Banquet which assembled at the Park Saw us at our very best and yet remained a lark. For despite our grown up guises, we were still a merry group Bent on seasoning ev'ry course, beginning with the soup, With anecdotes and trivia from a store of rich resources, And our gaiety resounded to the clink of changing courses. Unhappily our class decreased as months went winging by, And many a casual Hiya! became a strained Aye! Ayel As more and more our boys were called upon to serve the nation ln army, navy, signal corps, marine, and aviation. Commencement brings a mingled mood-part happiness, part sorrow, Reluctant to leave, we're beckoned still by promise in the morrow. LUCY AHERN THE SPANISH CLUB Los Amigos, established this year under the competent direction of Mrs. Lucy Ahern, functions as a medium to bring about better understanding and co-operation among the American Republics. At the meetings held every two weeks, the members dis- cussed future plans, sang Spanish songs and played Spanish games. One of the proposals concerned Inter-American corre- spondence, aimed at familiarizing its members with the students of our Spanish-speaking neighbors. The major accomplishment was the Latin-American Fiesta held on the twentieth of April. The event, an overwhelming suc- cess, featured two films on Mexico, a Spanish play, Una Fiesta Mejicanau and a bull-fight. This was followed by solos, Latin- American dances, and the purchasing of refreshments and native items at booths. lt is hoped that the club will continue to achieve the success it has enjoyed this year. Buena Suerte, Los Amigos. IIIUSIC BAND-The band this year really deserves extra credit because according to the community and Mr. Schaedel, it is the best one N.P.H.S. has ever had. Showing true school spirit, it has attended all the football games to give that added colorful attraction al- ways looked for by the spectators. Besides having played for Friday assemblies, the members participated in the annual con- certs Which displayed their good musicianship. Several ot the members were selected to play in the All-State Band. ORCHESTRA-The orchestra did a fine job in playing at the Dra- matic Club plays and at S.A.T. Assemblies. Some of its members Were also selected for All-State Orchestra. CHORUS-The Girls' Chorus made its first appearance in the Spring Concert, singing to band accompaniment. Then they sang for an assembly and tor the Memorial Day Services. Some of the girls tried out for All-State Chorus and succeeded in being chosen. Surely the excellent music department, under the direction of Maestro Schaedel, has proved the old saying that Music Hath Charms. MISS MARY MCCREA THE HALL PATROL this year has taken a more active part in school affairs than it has in many years. Following through with its purpose, that is to maintain order and gain respect from under- classmen, the Hall Patrol has kept order at basketball games, during lunch period and at any other time when their services were required. A great deal of praise for this year's patrol be- longs to our adviser, Miss Mary McCrea, Who's untiring effort helped us to achieve our many goals. After school as well as during class the girls had hockey, badminton, volley ball, basketball and ballroom danc- ing. The highly skilled art of fencing was introduced by Miss Ruth and some of the simpler rudiments of modern dancing. All these things helped to make us a little less clumsy and decidedly more limber. One ot the newest clubs organized in this hall ot knowledge is the Leader's Club. The object oi the club is to do exactly what the name implies-lead. From each girl's gym period several pupils were elected to Miss Ruth's creation. Regular meetings were held every two weeks where the girls were taught to work the apparatus, lead exercises and marching. ln time, any oi these students will be able to take over a class and run it well. The squad has supported the football team and basketball team in both county and state games. They have also assisted in making this year's assemblies more lively. Page Seventy-two M FCCTBHLL THE l944 FOOTBALL SEASON was not a very successful one, al- though it did afford an opportunity for the boys to enjoy a fine spirit of sportsmanship among themselves and among other teams. Hampered by the return of only four lettermen, Coach Gun- ther Heyse was confronted with the difficult task of getting to- gether a combination that would click. Although he was not corn- pletely successful, he did pick the best possible combination he could and should receive a great deal of credit for the untiring effort he put into his Work. The season was rounded out nicely by tying Bound Brook in a hard fought game. Coach Heyse had the valuable assistance of Coach Zony Iohnson and Coach Schwartz.
