During the past year the members of this group, in co-operation with the Public Affairs classes, have held discussions twice a month during seventh period on Wednesdays in the high school auditorium. Being one of the most lively clubs in the school, the topics used in the forums created lively interest among the student body. Topics such as National Defense, Crime, Freedom of the Press, i'Our Foreign Policy,' and Unemployment provided much of the fuel for the intensified interest shown by the students, Besides being active at home, the club has participated in inter-scholastic forums held at nearby localities. MISS HELEN CHURCH The introduction of a journalism course on the curriculum this year has materially aided in improving the style of the TUNLAW articles. The stu- dents taking this subject automatically became contributors to the paper. A new masthead in Old English type replaced the old masthead with the little elves. The double column Scenes Seen and Thoughts Thought was replaced by several single columns written by individuals rather than from contributions. All other features were continued as usual. An alternating staff was used for each issue and this system was so suc- cessful that it will be continued next year. If a young fellow had earned his letter in a sport and desired to enter the Varsity Club, he had to be chosen by a majority vote. The Varsity Club holds meetings twice a month and has raised money this year by sponsoring a basketball game with the faculty. Sports at North Plainfield High suffered one of its worst years in the history of the school Very few of the teams came through with a winning season but the season was very successful from another standpoint That is most of the varsity squads were composed of boys who will return next have Football suffered a relapse and lost the coveted Somerset County Trophy The start of the season was as fine as could be expected when the team tied Plainfield for the city championship However as other experi enced schools played the new material from Canuckville the team was un able to stand the grind As a result the Maroon and White squad was pummeled with defeats K Q A X year and they have gained the needed experience that a winning team must Page Flfhty The wrestling squad was unable to retain the Central Jersey and Somer set County championships this year but in losing these titles the team gave a fine showing only going down before more experienced opponents Outstanding among the seniors were Harold Rosenberg and Willie Towers These two fellows did exceptionally well in their class and were model leaders of the team Marcel DAmico Fred Cole Sylvio Donatelli Frank Pitera James He witt Henry Carlamagio Alfred Ranger Donald Ranger James Porto and Harry Polskin are all returning next year when the team is expected to be among the leaders of the state The Maroon and White baseball team showed plenty of power and it was pleasing to note that this display of batting strength came from fellows who will be out for the sport next year The pitching situation improved somewhat this season and it is ex pected that the new crew of twirlers will be still better next year The pitchers that Coach Howard Krausche will lose via the graduation route are Bill Chapin and Herbert Zelikowsky Bill was the ace twirler for the Canucks and his loss will be greatly felt Herbert was the fireman of Leon Toucheon and Larry Barrett are the only other players to leave Touchon played his third year on the varsity and it was his best Although handicapped by pre season injuries his leg healed rapidly and he soon was playing outstanding ball in all the games As points on the track team were won mostly by underclassmen the track team in the years to come should have very fine seasons and should bring the County Championship home to North Plainfield The tennis and golf clubs again sprouted strong combinations and won most of their matches On the whole sports at North Plainfield was a little below average but every athlete enjoyed seasons of the best sportsmanship and best team work that they have ever experienced jfmflaff Page Eighty one ib Sk K the team being used mainly for relief.
