CLARK Under the advisership of Mr. Clark for the second consecutive year, the Hi-Y Club attained new heights. With a fine group of officers, headed by President Frank Browne, a Class A rating was acquired. The annual I-li-Y dance, held in the early spring, was, as usual, a huge success. Likewise, was the program sponsored by the club for the school assembly, a great success. The club basketball team, entered in the District No. 6 League, proved itself to be among the best, winding up the season in the top half of the circuit. Following the policy set by last year's club, an excellent arrangement of weekly programs was carried out. Several fine speakers were engaged for the meetings during the year. Group discussions supplemented these addresses. Considered as a whole, this year and the last have brought great success to the Hi-Y. Every undertaking has been a success and the members have acted as a single unit through everything. All of this has come about during the years of Mr. Clark's holding office in the club. The unusually large attendance at the meetings continued during the entire year. One of our first ventures was a pot luck supper which turned out to be very amusing. Then we danced our cares away to the gay music of the Merry- men at our Christmas dance, the first of the season and the finest ever held. The girls all co-operated in giving a Christmas party for the orphans. The feature of the joint meeting with I-li-Y was a lively discussion on what to do and where to go after a date or dance. The father and daughter party was held in February. Another dance was held in the spring, and another success was enjoyed by all. Suppers were held at various times during the year. The year came to a close with the father, mother, and daughter banquet, at which time the awards were given out. Both groups worked consis tently throughout the year, and all members took part in interscholastic debates. A novelty chapel program sponsored by the Debate Club took the form ot a debate with the faculty, using basketball rules. The question was: Ref solved that homework should be abolished in N. P. H. S. During the season two questions were debated by the varsity: 'Resolved that the United States should boycott the l935 Olympic Games in Germany and Resolved that the several states should enact legislation providing for a system of complete medical service available to all citizens at public exe pensef' the latter being the state question. The team participating in the state finals, which were held at Princeton April 25, was composed of Edward Greenfield, Charles Adams, and Livio Dalto, who also gave the rebuttals. Herbert Schulkind was alternate. The Student Council, under the guidance of its counselor, Mrs. Alberta Owen, assumed the responsibility for a great many activities and reforms during l935-36, each project being carried out by a student committee. An enjoyable dance in lanuary and Friday noon-hour dancing during the winter were the contributions of the Social Committee with Miss Marie Haggerty as adviser. Ushers were supplied for all dramatic and musical pre- sentations, as well as for such events as Guidance Night, Open House Night, and Commencement. Several valuable policing units, of which the most important were the Hall Patrol sponsored by Miss Mary McCrea, which regulated traffic in the halls between classes, and the efficient fire drill corps, which functioned smoothly through a series of drills, did much to preserve order. Arrangements for seating the students in an orderly manner in assembly and conducting the programs were made by the Chapel Committee, while the Finance Committee, to solve an old problem, devised a uniform system of bookkeeping for all school organizations. A very successful Student Day and Borough Day and the State Con- vention at Princeton University rounded out the year's program, which is considered one of the most comprehensive and satisfactory ones since the Council was formed. We have had many interesting reports concerning Spain, which were given by the members and sometimes by our adviser. A Hallowe'en Party was one ot the outstanding events enjoyed by the members. Miss La Maiestre, from Montclair State Teachers College, was also pres- ent at one of our meetings to entertain us with a few Spanish dances. We rnade our annual visit to the Spanish sections of New York and El Chico, a very popular Spanish restaurant. RAYMOND TEMPLIN Student Council Representative ...., ANNA LUCCHESI The Library Council emerged frorn the Library Club which was started by Miss Miller. lt is now coinpleting its fourth year, Although it has fewer social activities than the others, it is one of the well-known organizations ot our school. lt provides practical training tor those interested in clerical and library work alter they have cornpleted their high school course. lts rnernbers consist ot those with marks of C or better, who volunteer one or two periods a week to work in the library and who attend meetings at which they are given instructions in various tasks of library work, One ol its prominent social functions was the Teachers' Tea, conducted entirely by Library Council members. Next years plans will change the work of the Library Council to sornes thing tar rnore interesting. The meetings will contain not only club business and library inslruction but also the appreciation of book niakefup and books and literature. Throughout the year the newspaper helped to increase the support of school activities, such as Election Day and the Mikado, At the time of the disas- trous floods Tunlaw launched a campaign for relief funds and raised a con- siderable amount, which was turned over to the local Red Cross. Since many members of last year's staff had been graduated, an almost entirely new staff was built around the few remaining members. Though few had had any previous journalistic experience, they proved to be apt pupils and soon were handing in work of a high caliber, Tunlaw was represented at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association conference, which was held during March in New York City, and it was awarded a prize in its division. The Girls' Athletic Association of l935-36 has been most successful and prosperous, carrying out its program under the leadership of its counseler, Miss l-labgood. A drive on membership, reaching a total enrollment of approximately two hundred, started the year, The Council then decided to appoint a sports editor with one assistant for the Tunlaw, the former to receive for her serv- ices one hundred points toward her letters, and the latter fifty, Dorothy Spencer and Winifred Rafferty were elected to fill the positions, For the first time in the history of the school, a Riding Club was orga- nized. A small Rifle Club also was formed with Mr. Fred Green as adviser. During the basketball season several play days were held with neighbor- ing high schools. These contacts developed many friendships and a good spirit of sportsmanship. The annual gym exhibition, under the direction of student leaders, Miss l-labgood, and other members of the faculty, was a huge success. The spring sports program will include tennis, archery, track, and base- ball. Tentative plans are being made for a banquet in May, at which the N. P. letters, numerals, and emblems will be awarded. T761 Ss, ig. wi qi, v '4 DRAMATIC CLUB The purpose of the North Plainfield High School Dramatic Club has been to give its members practical experience in the interpreting and producing of outstanding plays, to promote interest in the dramatic activities of the school, to develop the creative talent of the students of the school, to encourage the reading and witnessing of better plays, and to promote an enthusiasm for the drama in all of its phases. The season of 1935-1936 found the mem- bers of the Club enthusiastically trying to achieve these high aims under the leadership of lane Bocap, who succeeded to the presidency when Frank Murtha left school in the late fall. Two public performances of unusual merit were presented by the club members. The first, given on the evening of December 6, was the well- known comedy The Man on the Box. At the lirst ot the year, a very small percentage of the boys were able to carry a tune, but by February they had progressed to the point Where they were able to sing accurately their parts in The Mikado. lmprovement in mus- ical taste and appreciation has kept pace with improvement in vocal technique. E821 GIRLS' GLEE CLUB The Girls' Glee Club has also made a name for itself. The object this year has been to train the voices so that next year a standard class of vocal music may be sung. Public appearances in which the Glee Club took part include numer- ous assembly programs, two formal concerts, and the production of Gilbert and Sullivans opera, The Mikado, which we may say has made musical history for N. P. H. S, I THE ORCHESTRA North Plainfield High School has witnessed for the first time the develop- ment of a band under the able .direction and leadership of Raymond C. Rogers. The band has played at all football games, and with the orchestra and Glee Clubs it contributed much to the success of the fall concert. The band will attend the State Band and Orchestra Contest' in the spring and participate in the Spring Concert on May 29. A reorganization of the orchestra also took place this year. An attempt is being made to build it up to symphonic instrumentation. Several instru- ments have been added: fwo bass viols, two 'cellos, a sousaphone, and two French horns. The activities of the year include playing for assembly pro- grams, Open House Nite, and P. T. A. meetings, participation in two formal concerts, and in the Orchestra Festival at Asbury Park where the Calif of Bagdadu will be played. 'sr ar s-flfzcfxf FOOTBALL Our new coach, Mr. Albert Twitchell, with his fine spirit and expert coaching, led the Canuck gridders through a successful season, although the team was handicapped by the lack of weight and veterans. The Somerville game was the outstanding contest of the season, The tired Canuck team scored in the closing minutes of the game to overcome a l2-6 lead and came through for the school. Plainfield, our old rival, was held to a l2-2 score on a slippery field. The boys played a hard game but were overcome by the weight and reserve of the large Plainfield squad. Although the team came from behind to Win a number of games, none illustrated its fighting spirit as well as the first contest with Plainfield. This game was won in the closing seconds by the Canucks. North Plainfield was one of the three schools chosen to represent the Central New lersey Group lll schools in the State tournaments. X S ol L X l l CROSS-COUNTRY Upon his arrival at our school this year, Coach Long faced the task ot developing a cross-country team from one letter man of last year and a num- ber of new candidates. Because of the tact that the school was not expected to be represented by a cross-country team, a schedule was not prepared. However, two meets were secured with Thomas Ieiterson High School of Elizabeth. The team made a good showing in both of these contests. In spite of the limited experience of the participants, Coach Long developed some good runners, and a still better showing may be expected of the team next year. ISN TRACK Coaches Thomas Long and Fred H. Greene have charge ol the l936 track team. Both excelled in this sport in college, and although they are new at the school, they have already built up great enthusiasm among the student body for track.
