TS '56 VOLUME SEVENTEEN 9 M49 N wifi? Mi, A HCJME FOR THE 8 . ,L A MODERN MUSTANG INTRODUCTION lt is axiomatic that every publis- cation has a message to deliver. That contained in Hoofbeats '56 is a simple one. It is a story of four classes and their years! Four years of progress, of change, of reaching toward maturity. This year Hoofbeats '56 is presented in a new form, a form equal to the ideas it hopes to express. To express this idea the Hoofbeats Staff has selected as their theme THE MODERN MUSTANG. The major theme, THE MOD- ERN MUSTANG, is handled in several different ways throughout the Annual. lt is to be found on the stylized drawing on the cover, the bright colored section pages, and the modern type used in this volume. Therefore with pride . . . we present Hoofbeats '56 . . . an experiment in the modern form and a history of a year. C51 ATH oun scHool. Miss Beulah Twist, who taught typing at North High for many years, died last year as a result of cancer. Seven years before here untimely death, Miss Twist realized the serious- ness of her illness and that soon she would die. Facing reality courageously, she continued her teaching career at North High until last summer at the time of her death. To both the teachers and students who knew Miss Twist and those who have heard of her, she stands as a symbol of courage. To her memory we humbly dedicate Hootbeats of l956. , , v ' . ff f -1' Q13 ,my-X , I' N 3' ' , ,.. ,, .J f A 'A iq ff ws k 11 ' Qs ,, , 'X ' s if J ff I' 1 J N 1 'Y ,fx X5 . SERVICE 9 FACULTY FUN CPEN HGUSE The pictures on the opposite page were taken at faculty party based on the western theme. Everybody seems to be relaxing and enjoying themselves after a hard day of teaching. These three pictures were taken at open house where parents and teachers have a chance to get to know each other. Parents also get a chance to learn just how their son or daughter is doing. The results of these get-togethers usually benefit all concerned. The custodians and cafeteria workers do much toward keeping many things in school running smoothly and efficiently. They are the people behind the scenes who you seldom hear about. It is because of them that the campus is clean every morning and that there is some- thing to eat every noon. These people help out in many student affairs, such as dances, din- ners and other activities. We owe them a vote of thanks for the fine job they have done dur- ing the past year. Freshmen for the first time in the history of North High staged and presented a talent assembly including only stu- dents from their class. To begin the year and ac- quaint freshmen, a mixer, spon- sored by the Boys' Alliance, was given in the Mustang Corral. Freshmen participated in this affair and made it a great suc- cess. Freshmen made up the basis of the Pep Club this year and were active members of such school clubs as the social com- mittee, corral board and cafe- teria board. Freshmen joined the upper- classmen in forming Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y groups, which are af- filiated with the Y.M.C.A. North High's freshmen are an active group and participate in all school sports, clubs and activities. l3te.A7l7hw oiflfwjwlli' FRESHMAN CLASS CF?-iCi.RS, LEFT 'EO RIGHT, F-RGNT ROW: Jim Ludke, Honor Court Judge, Adolfo Quezada, Vice-President: Marilyn Johnson, Treasurer, Bill Rudd, President. A homebound student, he was to have gradu- ated with the senior class this year. An avid pen-pal, Bill spoke up this year when the school board was considering the substitution of a correspondence program for the homebound student. Bill will be remembered as an example of courage and fortitude for which North High can be proud to have been a part. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS, LEFT TO RIGHT, FIRST ROW: Virginia Olmsted, Bill Evans, Karen Webb. SECOND ROW: Paul Gaillard, Karl Steinman. The class of '56 gave the first sport dance of the year. Seventeen was well-attended for more than one reason. Aside from the fact that it was the first sport dance of the year, seniors turned out because it was the beginning of a year of lasts for them. The profit from this dance enabled the class council to plan a busy schedule. Next on the autumn calendar was sponsoring a movie. Plans were started in November for post- Christmas holiday events. But time was taken out by most seniors to attend their Thanks- giving Day football game as North High stu- dents. Not disappointed by the results, seniors returned to school until the Christmas vacation interrupted with numerous festivities. Two weeks after a vacation, a small number from many talented seniors were chosen to represent the class in the annual Senior Talent Assembly. With Bill Evans as Master of Ceremonies, and sparkling performances by all students in the show, it was a colorful success. Following the talent show, still in January, came the seniors' semi-formal dance, Memories Are Made of This . Featured in the decorations were the results of the senior most elections. 17 I7 4? FCREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT Lisbon, Portugal, appears as the home ad- dress ot one North Phoenix High School stu- dent. Francisco Rebello de Andrade, better known to his classmates as Chico, is this year's foreign exchange representative on our campus. Although in the United States for only one year, Francisco speaks English almost as well as one native born. His activities at North Phoenix include Senior Council, Student Coun- cil and Boys' Alliance Cabinet. Many of his artistic efforts have met with unequalled suc- cess by his winning of numerous gold keys and medals. North's exchange student, Fran- cisco, is pictured performing the daily activities any North High student would. FRANCISCO REBELLO de ANDRADE C997 NORTH'S SALAD BOWL ATTENDANTS North High's decision in the selecting of Salad Bowl Princess was broadened by the Exec- utive Committee's plan to have our Student Body nominate ten girls from either the Junior or Senior class. These ten girls were then to be presented and interviewed by Student Body President, Brent Cardwell, in an all school assembly. The Student Body would vote again reducing their selection to tour girls. These tour girls would appear before a panel of judges consisting of faculty and students, who would in turn select North l-ligh's representa- tive to the Salad Bowl festivities. I 001 'Wm Salad Bowl Princess, Carole Thomas, brought honor to herself and the North High campus. One of the con- testants, she rated in the top tour, consequently being an attendant to the Queen, Denise Rowland. Her many activities while representing our school included attending a luncheon sponsored by the Kiwanians and a dance at the ABC Club where the Queen was chosen. H121 LEAGUE HCSTS MQTHERS AT TEA The ground was green with newly emerged tender shoots of grass. The sky was empty of even the threat of a storm, while the fireplace awaited the symbolic yule log. The sweet aroma of pine cone, fir tree and the clean sharp bite of wind were not present in that December day's air. But even though there was no snow, nor sleighs with melodious bells, there was the dancing music of Jingle Bells . And there were the peaceful hymns and the spirit of an old-fashioned Christmas as the Girls' League sponsored its annual tea. With the Mustang Corral as its setting and an old-fashioned Christmas as its theme the an- nual Mother-Daughter Tea was a success. The decorations of holly set about a large fully lighted tree were planned by Adele Brad- ford's decorations committee, while Diane Kleinman arranged for the vocal entertain- ment. The invitations committee was headed by Anita Ruthling, and Carole Lee Cupp, senior representative, chairmaned the refreshments committee. ASSEMBLY . . . Our first score was set up when Alan Sandell recovered a Mesa fumble. Then the Mustangs marched 45 yards and Lloyd Aycock scored from the two, North kicked off and Mesa's Livingston ran for an 82 yard touchdown. After that it was a hard fought battle but neither team was able to score. Frank Evans, Fred Lyddon, Alan Sandell, Bob Gray and Jon Marx were standouts in this game. NORTH - AMPHI - 21 lt was a sad day at Tucson on Oct. 9 when the Amphitheater Panthers shut out the Mus- tangs for the first time in 23 games. The in- yuries of halfback Lloyd Aycock and fullback Jon Marx hurt the Mustangs' offense. Amphi scored their three touchdowns on North furnbles and a pass interference penalty. 1821 Pete Hjort i461 moves in on Mesa's Livingston l211. NORTH - 14 TUCSON - L Lloyd Aycock paced the Mustangs to their victory over the Badgers. He had an average of 15.5 yards per carry. He also scored a touch- down on a pass play from Lyddon. N 0 RT H - GLENDALE - Due to Glendale fumbles, the Mustangs escaped an upset by the Cardinals. The Cardi- nals outplayed the Mustangs all through the game. One time the Mustangs made a bril- liant goal line stand which stopped Glendale's chance of upsetting us. The absence of Lloyd Aycock, due to an ankle injury, hurt the Mus- tangs. Quarterback Fred Lyddon got the game's only touchdown against the Cardinals when he sneaked over from the 2 yard line in the sec- ond quarter. Marv Davis and Alan Sandell were outstanding on defense. Lloyd Aycock t32l jumps in the air to break up a West High pass play, and John Mackler comes in to assist. NCJRTH - 14 YUMA - 21 For a while it looked as it the Mustangs would come from behind and beat Yuma. But early in the fourth quarter Yuma made a touchdown that cinched the game. Scoring for North were Dave Dunbar with a lO yard sprint and Lloyd Aycock with a 45 yard run. H833 An unidentified North player tackles McCormick l3'll of Camelback. ln background are Pete Hjort t46l and Marv Davis t42l. NORTH - 14 SOUTH - 14 The passing of Rennie Crittenden and run- ning of Lloyd Aycock started us off strongly against South Mountain. But in the second half the Rebels went wild and tied the score. They almost upset us, but a fumble stopped that. Lloyd Aycock scored both our touchdowns. First Aycock plunged l yard for the TD. Then Rennie Crittenden passed to Aycock and he went 30 yards for the second touchdown. N O R T H - CAMELBACK - North was able to complete only one pass in their first game with Camelback. But that one pass, from Rennie Crittenden to Arleigh Biehler gave us our only and winning touch- down. lt was a defensive game all the way, The running of Lloyd Aycock, Dave Dunbar and Ronnie Stephens kept North rolling.
