Vol. 29 North Penn High School Pennsonian Carpenter St. Blossburg, PA. 16912 The Boom-box, the Walkman, and music videos ... these innovations owe their existence to society’s love of music, especially our generation’s love of music. Since music is such an important part of our generation, it would be a major injustice to fail to document its impact on our daily lives. Music also deserves recognition because it can help us remember a certain place, person, or feeling from long ago. Songs are able to bring back memories. As you will notice, titles of popular songs have been applied to various aspects of life at North Penn. Sometimes the connotations are humorous, sometimes they are retro- spective, and sometimes they are simply appropriate. Unlike the sentiments Michael McDonald expressed in No Looking Back”, we want to keep an eye on the past, with the help of the 1986 Pennsonian and the music which played so great a role in our Senior Year. Well I was born in a small town Educated in a small town Used to daydream in that small town Another boring romantic that’s me. No I cannot forget where it is that I come from I cannot forget the people who love me Yeah I can be myself here in this small town And People let me be just what I want to be. (from Small Town” by John Cougar Mellancamp) Top lefts Caught you by surprise Wendy! Top right: N.P. fans checking out the football players. Above: A warm smile from Debbie on a cool fall day. Seniors In the future, all of us will look back at our high school years and see how each and everyone of us have grown, together as well as separately. We went from 7th graders who counted down the years to graduation and enduring school only because our friends were there-, to seniors who are trying to make our last year the best because we come to realize that some of us will never see each other again. The song, Don't You Forget About Me,” by Simple Minds, says it all. We will have many memories, both happy and sad. but they are only memories that we can associate with our high school years. Whenever, we look at this yearbook, we will remember our senior year and all of those who made it worth remembering. ADAMS. Justin BENDER. Lonna BOGACZYK. Ken BOINSKE. Paul BOMBASKI. Beautiful Jill. 1985 Homecoming Queen!! 12 This year's Homecoming is one that will not soon be forgotten. The day started out with our annual parade down Mainstreet from the school to Island Park. The parade featured the Band and each candidate riding in a sportscar. The weather held for the parade, but by game time it was poru- ing down rain. The rain continued throughout the en- tire game but North Penn's faithful fans stuck it out to see their team play. The Gelling ready for the big day! weather made it very difficult to play and the game was riddled with a lot of setbacks. Just before haltfime. our quarterback Steve Brion was injured which hurt the team. Our Panthers played well but because of injuries and missed scoring opportunities, the team was defeated by Wellsboro 13 to 0. During halftime, the Homecoming Candidates braved the storm to stand on the field for the crowning ceremony. The Band, which usually stands behind the candidates was kept off the field by the weather so as not to ruin the instruments. Jill Hodder was crowned as this year’s Homecoming Queen, with Barb Cowan as the first runner up. Sieve Brion back for a pass. The Queen and her court. Barb Cowan, our first runner up. I came to the USA on the 19th of August. Before school started, I had a week or two to improve my English and to see the surround- ings. I learned a lot of English the first few days by watching He- Man”, Gl Joe and other cartoons. In the meantime, Rob and Steffan showed me a lot of the surroudnings. The first few days of school were confusing. We had learned British English and the American slang version was hard to under- stand. k I haven’t been at North Penn for a long enough time to have very strong memories of anything in particular, but I will always A remember that Kerri Greer wanted to send me home by train to Cuba. There are more of these small things which I will remem- ber from this year: the senseless fights during lunch. Beaver. I A getting soda during lunch, and everybody who would pick on me for one reason or another. At last. I’d like to thank all the nice people, teachers, and students who made it possible for me to have one of the most wonderful years of my life. I want to thank Mrs. U, who helped me a lot, my host families: the Wigerts, Pierces and Pidas and the students on the foreign exchange committee: espe- cially Karey. Debbie and Jill. I also want to thank the coaches and other players for having the patience and time to tell me something twice when I didn't under- stand it. I loved all the sports I could do here and I’m really going to miss them at horne. I want to close by saying that it is a wonderful experience to be in another country. If you ever get the chance to visit another country, you should go because no one can take away what you will experience. Jan Above right: Boy's of Summer (Don Henly) Top: Innocent Man (Billy Joel) Above: Hard Habit to Break (Chicago) As underclassmen, we must put to use the great potential that we have. We anticipate challenges for which we must prepare. We may be just beginning, and feel some doubt and fear: but we'll always have fond memories of our underclassmen years. So as in the song Celebrate Youth” by Rick Springfield, we must remember: To celebrate youth, and those who have it Celebrate youth, give them sight The future of the world is in the hands of the children So celebrate youth, teach them right. Everybody sees in the younger one the hope Everybody sees in the younger one the dream Everybody lives the pride and passion of the young From the womb to the tomb, We will remember what it means To Celebrate Youth! Faculty Although Money for Nothing” (Dire Straits) was suggested as the proper lead in to the Faculty section, the obvious importance a teacher plays in the life of a student makes this inappropriate. At North Penn, the later successes of its alumni attest to the fine job done by our faculty. The lyrics of Teacher. Teacher” (38 Special) somewhat reflect the apprehension felt by the seniors as they near the end of their years at North Penn. Just when I finally thought I learned my lesson well There was more to this than meets the eye. And for all the things they taught me, only time will tell. If I’ll be able to survive. Teacher, teacher can you reach me I want to know what’s going on? 41 Seniors. Everyday from June I 3. until the day you die each of you will be a representative and sample product of North Penn High School. We hope that you will always be cognizant of this and that by being proud to be a graduate of this school you will always make us proud. Good Luck. W.H. Trowbridge To the Class of 1986. For six years you have been students at North Penn High School and it's been a great pleasure of mine to watch you grow and mature into fine young adults. The Class of 1986 is made up of friendly, intelligent people with lots of potential. I hope that North Penn has helped you in reaching that potential. Your Principal. William M. Hurley 43 44 To the senior class of 1986 There are many things to say: you've enjoyed many good times and experienced much sadness along with your share of hard times at NPHS. Yet you have managed to come out on top. I want to tell you to strive for the best, work toward your goals and never give up: life's mediocrities are not good enough, so don't settle for anything less than what you desire. Best of Luck. Special events further add to this experience. As Kool and the Gang state in their hit Cherish”: Let’s cherish every moment we have been given, time is passing by. These lyrics reflect the thoughts of students as they try to make the most of the time they share as classmates at North Penn. Whether it’s putting together the scenery for the Wizard of Oz” or plastering a faculty member with a chocolate cream pie at field day, these shared times drew us all closer together and add yet more fond memories. 53 PewuSowiQH Jl PVP This year, the senior members of the year- book staff would like to dedicate their ef- forts to a person who many of us. at times, sees more of than our own parents. A fine classroom teacher, this person doesn’t just stop his work at the 3:30 bell. He has coached just about everything at N.P. at one time or another and always leaves the athletes with respect for his knowledge of the sport and fond memories of the sea- son. Currently, he is girl’s track coach, coach for the boy's elem. program, and also spends his Saturday’s in gym trying to teach his be- tween the legs dribble. As Key Club advisor, a well respected PIAA official, and director of the Island Park, Mr. Hall always seems to be involved in activities important to youth of the community. So as thanks for everything he has done for us over the years, and also a great thanks to his wife for giving her husband up for so many hours each week, we, the senior mem- bers of the yearbook staff, dedicate the 1986 Pennsonian to Mr. Pete Hall. Some guys have all the luck, some guys have all the pain, some guys get all the breaks, some guys do nothing but com- plain.” These lyrics of Rod Stewart pretty much sum up the fate of a young man in his dealings with the opposite sex. As can be seen by North Penn's 1985 Homely Coming Candidates, their escorts had all the luck”. Judging indeed was a challenge as Miss Sleepy Hollow (because of dark hair on legs) was edged out by Miss Mansfield Bleachers (short- ness of dress possibly). t?£MD(J On Friday June 13, the Class of 86 received their diplomas in the North Penn Gymnasium. Class President, Jill Hodder welcomed friends and family making special mention of Brian Dawson and the inspiration he had been to his classmates as well as a special thanks to Mr. Hurley. ABOVE: Track MVP'S Dale Mundis and Jan Van Dijk 64 This year between January and April, strange sounds could be heard echoing through the halls of North Penn at night. These sounds were those of Lions growl- ing. Witches kackling. Wind whistling, and even Dogs barking. They were all due to the musical The Wizard of Oz” which was presented May ninth and tenth by the Drama Club. The musical took three months of prep- aration between try-outs, singing prac- tice. learning lines and making scenery. During the last few weeks before the per- formance it was easy to pick out cast members in the halls because they were usually covered with paint from building scenery. After all the scenery was built and all the lines learned, the curtain finally opened for the first performance. The cast included: Patty Fox as the Lion. Tony Musingo as the Tin Man. Amy Wood as the Scarecrow and Elaine Smith as Dorothy. Other cast members includ- ed: Wendy Shattuck as the Wicked Witch, Kim Hays as the Good Witch, Tonya Morgan as Gloria. Brent Shypu- lefski as Lord Growlie. Brian McClure as Uncle Henry. To the students of North Penn it’s football season, basketball season, and so on. Much of school life revolves around the sports calendar. A winning program reflects the dedication of those involved. The athletes, fans, and coaches at North Penn all contributed to another exciting and rewarding sports year. The lyrics from the sound track from the movie All the Right Moves” seems to state the philosophy of those involved. There’s more for us than giving in and only getting by. They say we’re going to sink or swim, but we intend to fly. And if we make the right moves if we make all the right moves. We can show them up there’s no way that we can lose. 69 I to R: Top row: Asst. Coach J. Bogaczyk. Coach Rolands. Coach Drask. Coach Kurns. Row two: B. Schnover. J. Winder. M. Hutchenson. Juniata 12 14 Wellsboro 0 13 Although the team fell short of their pre-season goal of a winning season, the team accomplished a great deal for only having twenty players. The team was tri-captained by Steve Brion, Justin Adams and Chuck Dake. Two highs in the up and down season were two impressive victories at home vs. Montgomery (39-6) and Hughsville (27-7). Then there was a succession of three hard losses at the end of the year. Cowanesque Valley (15-6), Wellsboro (13-0) and East Juniata (14-12). Though dominating in the overall statistics department, turnovers and the offenses inability to score inside their own twenty yard line, left the Panthers on the short end of the stick. Outstanding performers included All-Twin Tiers OB-DB Steve Brion. Steve led the Twin Tiers in all-purpose yardage as he passed for 1054 yards, ran for 538 yards and returned yards for 436. Another was Mike Ford as second in the Twin Tiers in Receptions with 36 catches for 605 yds. Jason Bowen was fourth with 31 catches for 431 yds. Justin Adams led the team with 93 rushing attempts that produced 398 yds. for 4.3 yds. a carry. Sophomores Ed Stevens (QB-WR). Tim Atkinson (SB-DB) and Sen- ior Jim O’Conners split time as receivers and defensive backs. On the line, Scott Miller 6’4. 290 was the team's most dominating player. Other standouts included Ricky Dake Jr. (C-DE) Scott Brion SO. (OG-DT), Tim Hilfiger Sr. (T NG) and Chris Trevino Sr. (OG-DE). The powerful North Penn Varsity Volleyball team finished an- other very successful season with a league record of 13-2 following play-off action and outscoring their opponents 441 to 230 in regular season play. One of the high lights of this year's season was North Penn’s participation in the prestigious Tunkhannock Volleyball Classic at Tunkhannock on October 5 which was limited to ten teams divided into 2 pools — playing 2 games rather than I match play. In the first match-up North Penn drew North Pocono and easily de- feated them 15-7, and 15-7. Our second contest was against Bethle- hem-Liberty and we won the first game 15-8 and lost by a 13-15 score in the second. In the third game North Penn played previously unbeaten. Nativity High School of Pottstown. and handed them 15- 8. 15-11 losses. Our final match in pool play was with Athens and North Penn won this contest 15-9, 15-6 to merge as the winner of Pool II. In the semi-finals. North Penn drew Towanda and bested them by a 15-10 score in the first game of match play. North Penn held a commanding lead in the second but Towanda fought back to win it 16-14 and go on to win the match game 15-7. During District IV tournaments at M.U. North Penn was able to avenge this loss by beating Towanda 15-13 and 15-7 as well as take a very satisfying win against last year’s champion. Canton. At Dis- tricts. North Penn cleared its way to the finals against Troy and finished second with 15-7,15-9 scores, to repeat as second in the league, and second in Districts. We'll be losing 3 All-Star players from this year’s fine squad. It’s going to make it tough to replace the calibre of players we’re losing but we will try and continue to be a dominant force in the N.T.L. Volleyball League. Top Right: Mom . . . catch! In the last five years that the boys have been NTL Champions, their total re- cord is 80 3-2. None of our team had ever experienced a loss until late this season when an injury-laden Panther team fell to a strong Wellsboro team. The defeat ended a 61 meet unbeaten string by North Penn. During the season, the boys rose to every occasion and fought off injury, absence, and a tough schedule. They rode the storm against Canton, they hammered Troy, they destroyed Mansfield, they got up for strong Elk- land. they demolished Addison, they soundly beat Loyalsock. Lock Haven, and upstart SRU. The Panthers were paced through- out the season by Dale Mundis. Jan Van Dijk, and the strong corps of run- ners. Pre-season favorite for team honors was Steve Brion. He was ham- pered much of the season but came back to win the League 800 and team with Jeff Runyan. Mundis, and Van Dijk to win the League Championship and District runner-up honors in the 3200 meter relay. Dale and Jan were also District 4 runners-up in the 1600 and 3200 respectively with Dale ad- vancing to the PIAA State Champion- ships. Dale and Jan also eclipsed long- standing school records. In the field. Mike Shannon was the Panthers top gun. but he was closely followed by Todd Berguson. Scott Mill- er. John Mahosky, Pete Hall and Ken Page. The key to success this season was team depth. The sprinters were led by Carl Wil- liams. Chuck Dake and Landon Smith. Hard work led them to team with Pete Hall and nail down the NTL Champion- ship in the 400 meter relay. Throughout this season 28 boys scored in varsity competition and 24 scored often enough to letter. As Coach Knaus said, Nobody gave us a chance at the beginning of the season. The girls volleyball team and both basketball teams received a lot of support from the strangest looking cheerleaders that North Penn has ever seen. They didn’t wear mini-skirts or saddle shoes — just hats, tee shirts and boots. These guys did some pretty easy waves and a lot of collapsible mounts (not on purpose!) Thanks for the laughs guys! Dallas cheerleaders watchout! Boys Night Out. (KROKUS) Dangerous But. Worth the Risk. (RATT) TOP RIGHT: Caught In The Game (Joe Spigotz) TOP: Dance Hall Days (Wang Chung) ABOVE; Call it the Blues (Elton John) Organizations A student at North Penn is more than just a student. Do Wot You Do” (INXS) is the philosophy of most as they become involved in activities such as Yearbook and National Honor Society. Such groups got students involved in such new experiences” as darkroom techniques, a trip to Quebec City, and community efforts such as Blood Mobile and Kiwanis projects. No one else can do wot ya do, do wot ya do And it’s not easy to take the time. Do Wot You Do” (INXS) But the students at North Penn do take the time, and the student life reflects it. Id NEW EDITION The Yearbook Room was the place to be as evidenced by Mr. Hurley’s frequent trips up to check things out. Despite Rob and Steffans booby traps. Hacky Sack exhibitions by Barb and friends, innumerable smuggled” pizza parties, and many other distractions, the 1986 Penn- sonian was actually put together. Editor Jill Hodder led an able crew who worked summer to summer. Business Manager Wendy Morgan and Associate Editor Barb Frederick provided Jill with solid support throughout the year. Amy Wood did some fine layouts. Missy Haynes tackled the most dif- ficult typing assignments. Rob Bond, Steffan Wigert, and Barb spent hours in the darkroom. Jill, Barb, Jan Van Dijk, and Cindy Brazda were responsible for the ma- jority of the photography. Underclassmen, led by Junior Cin- dy Brazda, made significant contri- butions. Sophomores Dale Mundis and Wendy Taylor worked on differ- ent sports layouts. Freshmen Dawn Pierce and Shelley Davis were lead- ing fund raisers as well as doing var- ious layouts. Editor Jill Hodder did a fine job coordinating the project. In the end, all involved will agree the beloved” fund raising and even giving up those summer mornings were worth the effort as our friends and class- mates enjoy the 1986 Pennsonian. 102 I'm Insane (Rati) BELOW CENTER: Pretty In Pink (Psydidelic Furs) BELOW: Crazee Now (Quiet Riot) ommm LEFT: Action! It was a bittersweet spring for the seniors and North Penn as a whole as Brian finally lost his valiant struggle. The courage with which Brian faced the greatest of all challenges has left an indelible mark on us all. Though not present in body at gradu- ation ceremonies, he certainly was in the thoughts of the seniors as they re- flected on the experiences the class had shared. Brian's love of life and the dignity he displayed as it was being eroded away set an example for all as we met our comparatively insignificant obstacles in the days ahead. 104 BRITISH ISLES TRAVEL CLUB Left to Right: P. A very important ingredient in a successful Pennsonian is the financial support of local businesses. Without their interest, the students of North Penn would find a fine yearbook nearly an impossibility. With dwindling enrollment, a small school is hard pressed to meet the rising cost of yearbook publications. But with the fine community support, the Pennsonian lives on. If the yearbook staff could sum up their yearly financial status, they could refer to ABC's hit How to be a Millionaire : Tell me, tell me how to be a millionaire. Tell me, tell me how to be a millionaire. Who wants to be a millionaire? I do, I do! Who wants to be a millionaire? I do, I do! But. when it comes down to recalling these memories all that come to mind are a jumble of happy times, exciting times and sometimes sad times. I’m looking back it seems to me in seventh grade the seniors seemed so mature and “ready for the world”. I couldn’t wait to be like them. As we advanced in age becoming a senior didn’t seem such a giant impossibility. All too soon we’ve become the “big fish” in the little pond of North Penn. Could we possibly be the same age as the seniors when we were in the seventh grade? Do they look up to us the same way we did? It seems an impossibility, the people we were thrown together within kindergar- ten, with whom we shared our dreams, our hopes and aspirations, the new friends we made and the old friends we cherish. This is our last year before we go our separate ways. Although we’ll always be friends, it’ll never be quite the same. Sue Montague Goo , o 0(1 an°fhe,5.S t ne K • . h0r '8n e°P,'n6 r . There were many memorable days at North Penn and 1 hope there will be more before I graduate. The Camera Club trips were always anticipated. On one trip to Darien Lake. I remember coming home and losing the lens in my glasses out the bus win- dow. On one unusual Hat Day. Susan. MaryAnn and I wore towels as our head- dress Our hair was looking marvelous” by the end of the day. The Awards Night is always a special time at North Penn. The one that 1 remember is when I was inducted into National Honor Society We were all nervous, but we were also very proud. Our class may have been called the loudest by a few of the teachers, all in all we are a pretty good bunch of kids. In our freshman year we had to give speeches. A few of us got a little watery-eyed and embarrassed. I think 111 always remember the pat on the shoulder and kind words afterwards. We weren’t always this nice all the time. We could be a very abusive class, when we tried. A few of the guys would abuse a certain squatty person and of course she would always fight back with some condescending remark. There was the study hall in 9th grade when we had no teacher. This was an over-sight that should not have been over-sighted. We did things in that study hall that Mr. Hurley would have loved to know about. I can remember when some of the guys threw Eugene Farley out a window and then locked it. Donna Bender 4StL T , Or . In our years at North Penn High School, we have seen many great, fun filled, victorious times. However we have also experienced just as many times filled with heartbreak, saddness and loss. Most older people say that you will never be as close to anyone in your lifetime as you were close to your friends in high school. This I can truly believe. Friends when you’re at this Brink stage” (on the brink of being an adult, yet somehow trying to hang on to your child- hood) are really the only ones you feel you can confide in and trust. If I was to say anything about high school years. I would have to say I was Most thankful for my friends who listened to and understood me.
