nee pon ime The Shining Kingdom Carpenter St. Blossburg, Pa. 16912 ince history had been recorded from the memory of the wisest and most scholarly sages, the bravest knights and the fairest maidens have arisen from the Great Kingdom of the North, located in the northern most reaches of the Great Wilderness of Penn. These noble people flew as their banner a large blue Panther on a field of white. Thus these valient people became known as The Panthers of North Penn.” Therefore, these Panthers of the North Penn were guided and protected by a indomitable force, an omnipo- tent power derived from deep in the bowels of the uni- verse, and this force they named Spirit.” This was the force that made the Panthers of North Penn unscatha- ble, not only in flesh but also in mind and fellowship. Their Spirit” could not be driven asunder, not by the sword, or in the arts. Thus they went into games of sport, merriment, or scholarly endeavor on fire steeds, garbed in fine rainment as was the guise of that time. Guided by their Spirit,” until they stood victorious in the sight of all men. 2 Theme m '' 11 ” r f i( 3 hus, now our tale doth unfold beginning with you Seniors quite bold A tale of great maidens, fine steeds and tis fitting their tale now be told. In this kingdom lived men of impeccible taste, craftsmen of skill and maidens of outstanding grace. Seniors 2 5 £) Homecoming ’84 How can one sum up Homecoming 1984? They were the best of times. They were the worst of times. A day of celebration and festivity taint- ed by poor weather and a heartbreaking loss. But the day was not dreary for every one. Paula Carey found the silver lining in those stromy clouds as she was crowned 1984 Homecoming Queen, Kim Wells, also found a place in the sun as runnerup. For the Football team, whose early lead slowly melted away to a 30-21 loss to the Canton Warriors, the day seemed less cheery as things just didn’t seem to work out as planned. Even the cheerleaders, those grid-iron geishas, were forced to down jackets and sweaters as the mer- cury plunged to uncomfortable levels. In conclusion. Homecoming 1984 can be called a microcosm of the world, joy co- existing with disappointment, but the joy is what is remembered. The Queen and her court. Kim Wells. First runnerup. Homecoming Queen '84. Paula Carey. 10 Homecoming Paula receiving her crown. Steve Brion going back for a pass. Move on down .. . Heading for a touchdown. Coaches, filled with anticipation. That's all any teacher can ask. Remember, though, that learn- ing does not stop at high school or college graduation, but it will con- tinue throughout your entire life. Keep learning! Whether Spanish or Special Education, her compas- sion and genuine interest is evident as she tackles whatever challenges the day brings. A very popular teacher, Mrs. Lawson has not only survived the tough world of the substitute teacher but has prospered. As a principal. Mr. Hurley finds Mrs. Lawson his first choice when the need arises. This familiar, friendly face has made many days anything but a waste of time because of the absence of the regular teacher. School board members Mark Dalton and Carol Bond presented the long awaited diplomas. Class President Greg Ruberto wel- comed the family and friends of the seniors and introduced the guest speaker. Class Treasurer Paula Carey delivered the Invocation and Amy Shypfulefski delivered the Benediction. State Representative Edgar Carl- son, delivered the key note address stressing the importance of setting a goal and pursuing it with diligence. AWESOME!!! The P.I.A.A. mandated change in playing seasons from spring to fall marked the volleyball teams tran- sition from bridesmaid to bride . Mrs. Muto's squads have finished in second place five times within a ten year period, and this year's team dedi- cated themselves to the big win. The work started with preseason conditioning workouts in July and August to improve each play- er's strength and flexibility. For the first time. North Penn had the player depth to utilize a Multiple 6-2 offense. With the setter moving from the back- court, it gave us greater attacking and blocking po- tential. With their signature rallying cry Awe- some , the Panthers took to the courts handily de- feating each opponent. They breezed through and won the first half of the league with a 7-0 record, outscoring their opponent 236-123. They took com- mand of first place in the league after the 5th match in Elkland and maintained that lead until the 12th match. A very rewarding match in the second half was the exciting win at Wellsboro. This was only the second time a North Penn volleyball team (varsity) defeated the Hornets on their court. The second half record was marred by a defeat by visiting Elkland on Parent's Night. This meant that North Penn had to play Elkland again for the league title. However. District IV Tournament play was scheduled at Mansfield University before the title match-up. In District IV. North Penn drew Elk- land as its first match of the tournament and de- feated them quite easily. The next match was Troy which also was outmanned by North Penn. Canton proved to be the nemesis again and went on to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. (North Penn finished second to Canton in the 1983 season also). North Penn won its first N.T.L. West Volleyball Championship at Williamson on October 31 by a vic- tory over Elkland (last year’s winner). Winning that elusive number one was a thrilling moment for the team and coach. Elkland played a very determined game in this fourth meeting between the two teams, and took control of the first game 15-7. With total team effort. North Penn took the next two matches by 15-12; 15-13 scores. The spikers completed their season record at 14-1. The victory was also coach Muto's 70th win league game. This was the first year that a Northern Tier League West All-Star team was selected by the coaches and sponsored by the Star-Gazette. North Penn had two players named to that team; Captain, Kim O’Conners and Bobbi Jo Vroman. Other seniors who were vital to our success this year include Fran- cine Davies. Patty Kelly, and Paula Carey. Juniors on the squad include N.T.L. West Honor- able Mention player Barb Frederick. Deb Ogden played outstanding defense and back court passer. Lefthander Kerri Greer kept many opponents with her deceptive cross court spikes and serves. Sopho- mores, Cindy Brazda and Phylis Lowe made impor- tant contributions to the team effort. North Penn volleyball has had a long fine tradition of outstanding players and teams in the Northern Tier League since the sport was started in 1974. In echoing the words of the U.S.A. They again defeated Wellsboro 28-6. and ended with a 18-6 loss to C.V. As the year went on the junior Panthers improved each game. In preparation for the 1984 campaign, Mrs. Ma- hosky’s squad attended Cheer- leading camp at Mansfield Uni- versity and trained all summer. Being true supporters, they even allowed the football team to eke out a win in the Pep Bowl” at the Wellsboro Pep Rally. Our fearless leader. BOOK ’85 The 1985 Pennsonian Staff turned in a fine performance as they cap- tured in pictures and words, the people and events of the 1984-85 school year. Co-Editors Francine Da- vies and Patty Kelly coordinated the many activities necessary to see the task through to completion. Busi- ness Manager Paula Carey handled the thousands of dollars generated through fund-raising activities. Francine. with the contributions of Amy Wood (art) and Zeker (Ran- dy Isaacson), implemented the theme throughout the book. The senior staff members did a fine job and are leaving behind a fine year- book. Junior Jill Plodder lived” in the darkroom as she developed and printed the majority of the pictures used in this year's book. Juniors Barb Frederick. Wendy Morgan, and sophomore Cindy Brazda stood out contributing heavily in many differ- ent areas. The talent of Junior Amy Wood is evident in the division pages of the 1985 Pennsonian. The 1986 staff will be an exper- ienced and talented group who should again turn out a fine product. The new staff will be headed by Edi- tor Jill Hodder.
