Scott English February 22, 1964-August 27, 1980 In Memoriam And the tear that we shed, though in secret it rolls. Shall long keep his memory green in our souls. Thomas Moore TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication.........................................4 Underclassmen......................................5 Organizations.....................................36 Seniors...........................................48 Sports............................................65 Highlights........................................98 Faculty..........................................112 Advertising......................................124 NORTH PENN HIGH SCHOOL 1982 PENN SON I AN B LOSS BURG, PA 16912 2 Webster defines an obstacle as “something that stands in the way.” Life is full of obstacles. The closer we get to adulthood, the more challenging the obstacles become. Throughout this book there is a little fellow named “Al”, who faces many of these so-called “obsta- cles”. To a seventh grader filling out his schedule in Sep- tember, the journey he is about to embark on must seem overwhelming. From six-day cycles to that “gruff Mr. U.”, the obstacles to be overcome in his next six years are many. In the same manner, our little “Al” must face seemingly insurmountable obstacles in his path. Al- though there are many more flatlands that are easy to trudge over, to reach his goal, Al must struggle over the challenging hills as well. Throughout school, we are among friends, teachers, and are still the center of attention at home. Support is there, but we must assume more and more responsibility. Our success of failure is in our hands. Yes, these people can support us, but they can’t carry us. Al is facing responsibilities also, by just making the decision to take his trip, taking the right paths up the hill, and deciding where to go next. He is taking it in his own hands to make the decisions for his future. Decisions must be made and some will be wrong. Mistakes and pain will be endured by all. Some will not complete the journey. The struggle and risks are necessary, as one cannot truly enjoy the ex- hilirating view from the top, without knowing the effort it took to get there. Likewise, Al will have many pains and hardships while making hs way up the hills, but if he doesn’t go through the struggle, he'll never make it to the top. If he never reaches the peak of the mountain, he’ll never be able to look down on where he’s already been or to what the road ahead holds for him. The vast majority succeed and leave North Penn with the skills and momentum necessary to meet whatever may lie ahead. The memories are pleasant ones, like being part of a successful play, getting an A in Trig., scoring the winning bucket in that big game,... these are the rewards for our struggles, like the studying, the rehearsals, the endless hours of working on that jumper. After climbing all those mountains and pulling himself out of all those valleys, Al will probably be able to tackle any mountain that the unknown road ahead holds for him. As our seniors gra- duate, they will see that their time at North Penn was not in vain, and when they leave this old building, they will be capable of tackling any obstacle placed in front of them. The friends who shared and cared, memories that will become more precious as time slips by, and the satisfac- tion that you feel as you met and mastered the stiffest challenge of your life .. . these are what we hope to pre- serve in our 1982 Pennsonian. Dedication The Class of 1982 proudly dedicates the 1982 Pcnnson- ian to Mr. Bradley Brown, in appreciation of his interest and guidance. As an advisor to the Senior Class, Mr. Brown has unselfishly given of his time and energy in making sure that everything went well for our class. From electing officers to pulling off a respectable graduation ceremony, Mr. Brown has helped us tremendously. In the classroom, he has given us an insight into our nation’s government and has had an amazing way of really keeping our interest, whatever the subject was. His friendly and witty manner has made him a favorite among the students. The Senior Class will never forget their fond memories of Mr. Brown’s P.O.D. class. He really shows an interest in his students and goes out of his way to help them. He has given us the confidence to strive toward our many and varied goals. Our years at North Penn have been happy and memora- ble, and to you, Mr. Brown, go our sincere thanks. ' ' BOGACZYK, Anthony BOGACZYK, Vincent BOLLINGER. Cruikshank, Business Manager: Pam Ogden, Advisor: Mr. Smith The 1982 Pennsonian is the result of hundreds of hours of unselfish work on the part the members of the yearbook staff. Editor Connie Cruikshank had the responsibility of seeing that the yearbook’s layouts reflected our school year. Pam Ogden, as Business Manager, coordinated the fund raising activities. Pam and Connie, through their fine example, led a hardworking staff. From September to June, staff members met their responsibilities faithfully and delivered a yearbook to their fellow students all can be proud of. From drawings of “Al”, (the little fellow frolicking on the bottom of our pages), to work done in the darkroom, staff members always came through. “Al was the product of Joline’s talented hand, with some assistance from Cathy Thomas and Anne Marie Musingo. Most of our candid pictures were taken and printed by Carol Frederick, Mary Kay Dalton, or Kim Baker. The actual layouts were the work of the staff as a whole with even freshmen such as Amy Baker, Tammi Marvin, and Wendy Minyo making valu- able contributions. Eight seniors will be lost to graduation and will be hard to replace. The underclass- men have been working side by side with the seniors and with their fine attitude, should continue producing fine yearbooks at North Penn. The staffs 22 members all shared in the candy sales, ad campaign, and annual Current card sales. The fund raising, though a headache at times, makes it possible for the Pennsonian to continue being the type of publication the students, faculty, and community can be proud of. Without the support of the community, the job of the yearbook staffs would be nearly impossible. SKI CLUB Front row: D. Pierce, M. Mase. B. Skoiny, L. Mase, K. Greer, K. Witushynsky, 2nd row: L. Mahosky, Coach Waks- munski The Panthers found themselves short handed through out an injury plagued season Varsity football 1981 was both a reward- ing and sad year. The year was high- lighted by two wins and a tie. Injuries early in the year forced many changes in the Panthers lineup and many boys found themselves playing out of position. This year the Panthers were paced by two hard nosed dedicated co-captains, Dan Kurzejewski and Glenn Miller. Both were devasting blockers and team leaders defensively. They also supplied very important leadership for a very young squad. Joe Bubacz senior quarter- back had an excellent year throwing to three fine receivers — Frank Oakes, Bob Brion, and Doug O’Conners. Junior cen- ter and defensive end Dan Dinnison turned in a fine year and was a defensive stalwart. Offensively Barry Watkins, started at guard. Scott Fessler, a senior started at offensive tackle and played al- most every defensive position, a very ver- satile athlete. Sophomore running backs Kevin Owens and Rich Priset and John McIntosh both excelled at linebacker and these sophomores along with David Mahosky a very tough tackle, should give defensive shows for the next two years. Owens and Bubacz along with Brion and Bob Valimont comprised the secondary. This years senior class was a very small but extremely tough bunch. Their dedication and loyalty will be hard re- placed. The intelligence and arm of Bu- bacz the speed and good hands of Brion, the dependability of Oakes, the versatil- ity of Fessler, the quickness of Carey the sure tackling of Valimont, determina- tion of Bogaczyk. leadership and the best examples of football players I know Kur- ejewski and Miller. Hustle and aggressiveness marked the style and the reason for success for the junior Panthers. The team was led by eighth graders Steve Brion, David Pida, and John Mahosky, and freshmen Randy Kendrick and Tod Jones. The fine record and title is something the whole team can be proud of earning. This was a fine group of boys who worked very hard (even getting up for 7 A.M. practices in the dead of winter), and will be a definite asset to fu- ture Panther fortunes. 69 JR. HIGH UNDE- FEA TED Going undefeated was their goal and they succeeded. Mrs. McNa- mara's team was led by Debbie Og- den’s 12.8 pts. per game and fine all around play. Barb Frederick (7.2 pts. per game) and Jill Hodder (4.3 pts. per game) teamed for many fast breaks as they won most of their games by a comfortable margin. Jolie Bombaski, Wendy Morgan, and Kerri Greer provided much of the teams rebounding. The second squad also went undefeated. CREEPERS THOSE PEEPERS Hey coach, left handed even!! Sophomore Mary Kay Dalton led the team in rebounding and followed closely behind Carol in the offensive departments. Forwards Tawny Stocum and Lynn Larson lettered in their junior year. Barb Kelly spent half her season in a cast but hopefully wiH'return next season. Sophomore Kim Baker appeared in 6 games for the var- sity and impressed everyone with her hustle. Six ball players with experience will be return- ing in the fall which means North Penn should be in the running in the NTL West. The High spot of the season was an exciting overtime at home over Williamson. A fran- tic rally in the final minute tied the game as Robin Bower hit some clutch outside shots. Mary Kay Dalton scored and rebounded in the overtime, “North Penn pulled one out”. Carol, where arc you? The 1981 basketball season pro- vided a lot of excitement for the coach, players, and fans. De- spite a record of 6 and 9, the team could have easily won an- other 6 games as their efforts too often fell just short in the late stages of a contest. Seniors Pam Ogden (co.- capt.), Judy Morgan (co.-capt. and last year's MVP), Robin Bower, and Tracy Watkins have wound up their careers at North Penn. These girl's filled 3 starting positions and will be hard to replace. Junior guard Carol Frederick led the team in scoring, foul shooting, and steals as well as being the only player to appear in every quarter. Many of Car- ol's points came off a fast break as the team unselfishly capital- ized on Carol’s quickness. A 73 Close Encounters .. . The J.V. squad finished with a 7-7 league record and a 7-8 record over- all. The season proved a test of Mr. MacNamara’s sanity as the team lost three by one point and another by two points. The team, with 3 or 4 Fresh- men starting throughout the season, played brilliantly at times and at oth- er times their lack of experience was evident. Sharpshooting Sophomore, Debbie Toothaker led the team in scoring with a 10 points per game average. Sophomore, Kim Baker, provided the team with fine rebounding and defen- sive play before moving up to Varsity at mid-season. Lori Smith played a great deal at all positions and showed steady improvement. Sophomore Nancy Sherant, worked hard throughout her first season and gained some valuable experience. Patty Kelly stood out as a hustling guard who never quit working and averaged 6 points per game. Kim O'Conners’ rebounding and shot blocking was outstanding. Francine Davies, Lisa Stoudt, and Amy Baker played well, with Francine finishing second in team rebounding. With some improvement in certain areas by these Freshmen, the J.V. squad re- turning will prove tough to beat, espe- cially with the addition of various members of an undefeated Junior High Team. The highlights of the season were a second place finish in the Mans- field Rotary Roundball Tournament with a 58-56 victory over Mansfield, and the first place finish in the North Penn Kiwanis Tournament. Tourney All Star selec- tions at Mansfield were Tim Llewellyn and Bob Brion while tourney All stars at North Penn were Bill Toothaker and Doug O’Conners. Another highlight of the season was the 80-74 victory over CV, the win- ner of the NTL for 1981- 82. All five starters hit for double figures in this game, paced by Dan Dinnison with 27. Dan was also named to the sec- ond team all NTL by the Elmira Star Gazette for 1981-82. The five seniors on the team were paced by Bob Brion 12.3 pts. per game avg. and Tim Llewellyn’s 9.7 pts. Frank Oakes came off the bench to fill in at forward or guard and averaged 3.2 pts. per game. Randy Nellis as a starter and sub showed his worth by handing out 44 assists. He shot 17 for 24 from the foul line for 71 %. As a team NP shot. 42% from the field and 60% from the foul line. Randy Lazouras was a hustler coming off the bench. 77 J.V. WINNERS 78 Where did the ball go? This is a breeze! What do I do now ? The 1981-82 J.V. Panthers had a very fine season as reflected in their 16-7 record. Three of those losses were by less than 5 pts. The highlight of the season was beating Mansfield and Wellsboro in back to back encounters, avenging previous losses. The team was made up of 6 well coached Sophomores and 5 promising Freshmen. The starting 5 usually consisted of Rock Griswold and Dave Mohonski at guards. Rock, with his steady ballhandling and Dave with his fine outside shooting complimented each other very well. Mike Carlson at center, brought down numerous rebounds that motivated the offense into action. Dave Mahosky and Todd Llewellyn as forwards, also helped to carry the team to victory with their rebounds and shooting expertise. Kyle Mundis came in at guard and got us out of many sticky situations with his fantastic foul shooting. Mike Wilson, Jim Bogaczyk, Greg Ruberto, Ron Ritt, and Bill Novitske will all be returning to next year’s J.V. team. Holding his breath and hoping for a miracle. row I —coach Mr. Warren, R. Ritt. M. The Wellsboro game was a particularly ex- citing one. The highlights of the games includ- ed Pam's spikes and serves, Liz’s lefties, Car- ol’s “calm control”, Connie’s “super sets”, Johnny’s aggressiveness, and Janie’s deadly serve. It was a young but experienced group that forged together the team effort necessary to win the League Championship. Senior Tim Llewellyn was the top scorer for the Panthers and was league champ in the 100 and 400. Tim set a school record in the 1600 relay this season along with Kyle Mundis (League Champ in the 1600), Rock Griswold and team captain Bob Brion. Doug O’Conners was the tops in the League triple jump, our strongest event (O’Conners, Llewellyn, Carlson took I, 2, 3) Mike Carlson blasted the soph, record in the high hurdles. Dan Wheeler always placed high with the intermediate hurdles. Senior Glenn Miller led the team in the shot and discus while Mike Thompson took the league crown in the javelin. Brion Carey held the pole vault duties all season and junior Bill Toothaker really came on in the sprints and the high jump. Rick Brown developed into a fine 3200 meter man and he and Mark Lawson and Todd Watkins did well with the relay duty. The team was hempered by injuries most of the season. But, with the champion- ship on the line, the boys put it together and won. Memories should include the snowstorms, the rain at the league championships and the District 4 Meet held in a van because of the rain. Stir all together for a Spirit Week! The North Penn Student Council wanted everyone to become involved for the Wellsboro football game and that was the main reason for the Spirit Week. It was also a building time for traditions. One of these was the Spirit Award. This was a competition for points and was awarded to the Class of 1982 and the Class of 1984. It was their reward for being the leaders and promoters of spirit. It is hoped that these traditions will carry on and grow to make each year the best ever. 5T0A1P THE HORNETS This girdle is killing me! This candle stands for all the heck we raised. Our Alma Mater North Penn High . . . 1 can't believe they want my autograph! I can’t wait to get out of here! 99 1982 was a vintage year for the chorus when they took on the task of putting on the Broadway production of “The Sound of Music” by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It is a true story of the von Trapp family that took place in Austria in about 1938. At the end of February, the scores arrived and the process of casting, building scenery, making cos- tumes, and learning lines began. Two major prob- lems existed. They were the many changes required, and the problems of the gym’s acoustics. Like al- ways, there were also minor obstacles to overcome. For example, keeping serious in a serious, mushy scene, or having to kiss someone you never even THOUGHT of kissing. Other problems included Doesn't Moose look sophisticated? The halls were alive finding parts to costumes, keeping sets in tip-top condition, lighting, and the constant fear of some of the characters getting the flu. However, through constant experimentation and concentrated rehearsal by everyone, cast and stage crew alike, these obstacles were overcome. Lighting A little of the required “hustle-bustle”, to pull off a play. with the Sound of Music Director and Cinematographer Tina Brazda worked out all of the prob- lems with lighting and filming and kept us in the spotlight when neces- sary. During the final week, the gymnasium was converted into a theater and we PRACTICED, PRACTICED, PRACTICED! Luckily, neither one of our leads, Cathy Thomas or Mike Musingo, lost their voice, and no one in the cast got sick, but even up to dress rehearsal, some costumes and scenery still had to be made. Although there were many times when we thought we wouldn’t make it, and almost quit, something kept us going and Friday night when the curtain opened, all systems were GO! and North Penn put on one of the finest stage productions ever. By Wenda Wood (in collaboration with Mr. Wood) Are those outfits really made of curtains? Did you know our school had so many women of the faith? Hat Day!!! The Flying Nun?! Despite a fine effort on the foot- ball field, the Panthers came up short on the score- board to Montgomery. At half-time, Tracy Watkins was crowned 1981 Homecoming Queen by our prin- cipal Mr. William Hurley and 1980 Homecoming Queen, Marion Bond. A dance at the High School ended an exciting day ... The class of 1982 had one of the finest commencement exercises to be found. It all started with the sweaty palms, breaths being held, shaking-all-the- while processional. Once we all made the stage, we looked out on all the familiar faces, and as a result, became calm. Next, our speaker. Miss Amy Kelchner gave us a tremendous, meaningful ad- dress that really was aimed at our class. This made many of us anxious to run off to college and other places in the world, and made the rest very sad. Finally, we got the chance to grab our diplomas, re- place our tassles, and run off the stage! And I mean run!!! Once we were out of the school, we all realized that this was it; no more homeroom, no more games, no more school. We had our sad good- byes, hugs, tears, and dreams of futures — unknown. Our class, no matter how far away we get from each other, will always be as close as we were in midst of North Penn High. Holy Smokes am I nervous! I can’t believe it! Lynn's in step! We’re all really going to miss Robin! 106 We’re On Our Way!!! Look out world here we come! Everyone knows who these two are! I can't believe they let ME graduate! Like Father, like daughter!
