We, the senior members of the 1978-79 Pennsonian staff, would like to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Walt Swezey who has been our custodian for six years. During those years, Walt has proven indispensable to both the students and fac- ulty of North Penn. Whether it’s helping a student with a jammed locker, or replacing a bulb in a projector, Walt keeps things running smoothly. Walt always has a pleasant word for everyone in the hall and has made many friends during his years with us. His willingness to lend a helping hand with various school activi- ties is also certainly appreciated. Prior to coming to North Penn, Walt spent 28 years as a shop foreman at Remington Rand in Elmira. When the plant closed, Walt accepted his position with us. Walt and his wife, Margaretta, reside in Mansfield. The Swezeys have no children. Walt enjoys his garden and his Honda in his spare time. Fixing a locker for an underclassman. This year we had many sales promotion activities such as car washes, bake sales, and a candy sale in which we raised over $1000. We ventured to New Jersey’s amusement park Six Flags Great Adventure. It was quite an experience. After finally getting our tickets, we traveled through the Safari where we saw numerous varieties of animals. The highlight of the Safari was seeing a baboon chewing a piece of gum. We spent the rest of the day at the amusement park. Many of us got soaked on the Water Flume. One of the highlights was Sherry Smith riding the Lightning Loops. For many, it was a very memorable trip. 72 £ £ n i 0 x 1 -Hibxaxu c f±±i±tant± First Row: W. Smith, S. Smith, B. Scaife, A. MA THEMA TICS AWARDS This was really a banner year for our mathematics club. It all began when the club members took part in a National Mathematics Contest. Our first awards are for club membership and participation in this contest. Receiving certificates are: Robert Bogart, Don Boinske, Roxie Chilson, Steve Cooper, Phillip Ogden, Mary Sue Thomas, and Chris Wood. We sent a six person team to Mansfield State College to participate in a contest. Our team finished in 3rd place out of 28 high schools finishing ahead of schools such as Williamsport High School, Corning East, Corning West, and Horseheads to name a few. This team consisted of Robert Bogart, Don Boinske, Roxie Chilson, Steve Cooper, Phillip Ogden, and Chris Wood. Chris finished in 2nd place individually out of 144 students and received a $75 sav- ings bond for his great performance. Robert, Phillip, Steve, and Don were all in the upper quarter. We also sent a 3 person team to the Bucknell University Contest consisting of Chris Wood, Robert Bogart, and Phillip Ogden. At Bucknell we really shone. North Penn's team finished in 1 st place for schools with enrollments under 525 students and 2nd overall out of 38 schools. Our score was even higher than State College High School which finished in 2nd place in large school division. Our school will be receiving a plaque for this great accomplishment. Chris Wood again finished in 2nd place individually out of 115 students and was only 1 right answer out of first place. Robert Bogart had honorable mention and received some mathematics books as a prize as did Chris. BOHJDSNOPg Dandy Randy A moose? What'd he say? i My my Do we do that? Then there were football games and practices to fill the time. The fantastic show for the Homecoming Game was really a grand show. Then the marching band marched for the Halloween Parade here in Blossburg. Several members of the band dressed in costumes. Then Concert Band took over the scene. With two practices every week, the instrumentalists soon learned their music to perfection. The concert in the spring was so good that we were asked to perform for the elementary school. We ended up the year with Marching Band, which per- formed for the Memorial Day Parade here in Blossburg. With some tricky precision marching, we really put on a great show. THE TEAM DISPLAYED GREAT SKILL AT BOTH ENDS OF THE COURT AND THEIR FAST PACED STYLE PROVED TOO MUCH FOR THEIR OPPONENTS. TflE TEAM STARTED OUT ON A GOOD NOTE BY DECISIVELY IXFEATING THE TEAMS FROM LIBERTY AND CANTON, WHICH MEANT THE FIRST PLACE TRO- PHY IN THE KIWANIS CHRIST- MAS TOURNAMENT. THE PAN- THERS NOT ONLYSDISPLAYED THEIR TALENTS IN THE BLOSS- BURG AREA, BUT ENTER- TAINED NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA WHEN THE CAMERAS FROM WNEP-T.V. CAME TO FILM THE PANTHERS GAME WITH THE WELLSBORO HORNETS. THE PANTHERS DEFEATED THEIR RIVAL IN A CROWD PLEASING GAME THAT WAS HIGHLIGHTED WITH A DUNK BY SENIOR BILL EVANS. EVANS CROSSED ANOTHER MILE- STONE WHEN HE BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD FOR THE MOST POINTS IN A SINGLE GAME. THE RECORD WAS PREVIOUSLY HELD BY DENNIS BOGACZYK WITH 42 POINTS. EVANS UPPED THE MARK BY TWO POINTS WHEN HE SCORED 44 POINTS AGAINST THE TEAM FROM LIBERTY. THE TEAMS SUCCESS IS ATTRIBUTED TO THE FINE COACH- ING EFFORTS OF MR. GARY RUBERTO, WHO THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF THE SEASON UTILIZED A STRONG BENCH PROVING TO BE A DECIDING FACTOR IN MANY OF THE GAMES. THE PANTHERS FLAIR ON THE COURT WAS GREATLY APPRECI- ATED BY THE HUNDREDS OF LOYAL FANS WHO FOLLOWED THE TEAM ALL THE WAY TO INTER-DISTRICT PLAY. THE SEASON HAD ITS DISAPPOINT- MENTS THOUGH. LOSING THREE HEART BREAKING GAMES TO WELLS- BORO COST THE AMBITIOUS PAN- THERS THE LEAGUE TITLE. Mr. Scotts team was led by a strong group of sopho mores, featuring the strong inside scoring game of Phil Bogaczyk, Rob Crane, and Dave Hall. Mark Ben- son’s outside shooting gave the panthers a well bal- anced attack, John Phinneys baseline drives and Lance Griswolds ball handling made the team even more impressive. Jeff Stoudt and Terry Levandoski provided added bench strength. Jerry Wesneski man- aged this year's team. Bob Brion and Tim Llewellyn were the only two fresh- men on the squad. In addition to the regular four- teen game schedule, the girls were invited to compete in the First Annual Tip-Off Tournament held in Elkland, Pa. In the two-day contest the Panthers finished a respectable second out of four possible places. The girls were coached by Mr. Jim Scott and through the course of the season encountered many obstacles. However, through desire and dedication, the team finished what may seem to some a mediocre sea- son, but was to them a very valuable learning experience. 95 ‘•Gerry” “Ken” “George Keith “Ken” Bill “Mike Steve L to R; Coaches: Costello Swope Waksmunski Trainer: Percy L to R; Back Row: Tr. A victory over Renovo was a bright spot in this football season. Renovo is very physical and even more so on their own field. There were some notable individual perform- ances in the rather bleak year Once again Ken Odgen lead the team in individual tackles even though he missed half of the year. Seniors Mike Makowiec and Bill Evans teamed for almost 1000 yards passing. Mike Phinney, Keith Johnson, Rob and Rick Snee, Steve Stiner, Ken Short, Don Jones, and George Dake are some seniors who will be missed. However, Mark Harman, Mike Stoudt, John Kendrick, and Dan Berguson lead a fine group of returning underclassmen which should brighten Panther football fortunes. School records were set by Evans in the high jump (6'5Vi ), Don Jones in the triple jump (42'‘ 2th), Dave Spencer in the discus (141'4 ), John Kendrick in the javelin (187'7 ), and Jeff Wheeler took six seconds off the 320 meter-fun record (10:20.3). These record setters were the power of the team, but depth was the team s strength. In one hun- dred-sixty-five events the boys swept all points, scoring first, second and third. Steve Cooper won two events in the league meet to help the team effort. Rob Crane, John Wood- ward, Mike Makowiec and Chris Molynek also picked up blue ribbons at the league meet. Am I high enough?? GIRLS TRACK 79’ AT OUR BEST! Flying high .. . Up and away ... Last one to the line is a ... The girls track team this year wasn’t as strong as we had hoped it would be. Some of the girls placed respectively in the league, and two girls (Sharon Mani- kowski and Darlyn Kendrick) showed respectable performances at district competition. We feel that next year we'll have a better and more experienced team and have great expectations! Come on, Darlyn, you can beat her! I can’t believe I did that! Thank God, I’m on the lead! I knew I could do it! 109 BOWLING — 78-79 LEAGUE CHAMPS Row 1: Teresa Mokrzynski, Darlyn Kendrick, Mary Makley, Connie Cruikshank, Mindy Muto. We would like to thank the Kiwanis for their generosity and also thank Mrs. Kendrick for being such a fine coach her first year! Our JV team had a rea- sonable season (Mary Makley, Connie Cruik- shank, Mindy Muto, Eileen Dalton, and Ann Manikowski) but expect to fire-up next year to defend the title! no I don’t believe you said that! The 1978 79 Varsity Cheer- leaders made many accomplish- ments throughout the year, one o which was to place 3rd m the Wellsboro Cheerleading Compe tition. No squad has ever placed in a competition before. There were schools from many sur- rounding districts. The competi- tion consisted of 4 rounds. The first was to do a Hello cheer and a warm-up cheer. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds were all eliminat- ing rounds. Our girls came in at a very respectable 3rd. We are proud of our cheerleaders and appreciate all the work they put in to make this year a very spirit- ful one. Left, Right, Left. . 113 J.V. Cheerleading B. Row: M. Bond C. Davis D. Krause F.
