As Back, Qckool BegUtS Looking back through our years at North Penn, we find we had many good times as well as many obstacles to surpass. Through these times, both good and bad, we have always had the help of our teachers. We wish to give a very special thanks to one in particular. She has helped us not only on our social activities throughout our senior high school years, but in class too. She helped us with our junior prom, chaperoning d a nc es and buses, cheerleading advisor, and advising us with our problems, With our deepest gratitude we would like to dedicate this yearbook to MRS. SUSAN UNANGST 2 Toblk ofr Condenti SENIORS......................... 10 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION ... 34 UNDERCLASSMEN................... 52 ORGANIZATIONS................... 76 SPORTS......................... 94 Looking back through our years at North Penn High School, we the class of 72 must pause and evaluate the first years of our lives. Many experiences have filled these years, both good and bad. Outclasses have prepared us to go onto higher education or to begin work in various fields. Upon leaving North Penn, which has been our world for 12 years, we must scrutinize the skills we have attained and prepare to make use of them. We hope that this yearbook will be successful in pre- serving memories and events that have played an important part in shaping us into mature men and women. 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 fwiTtoAjtcfeou io Geuim 1972 CLASS OFFICERS Secretary: Deb Carey Treasurer; Mike Lloyd President: Mark Dalton Vice President: Cindy Machmer CLASS MOTTO There are too many books 1 haven't read, too many places I haven't seen, to many memories I haven't kept long enough. I hope your future is one of happiness and success. Mrs. Sherman Seniors, 1 wish to convery to class of’72 my hopes for all the success and happiness you can possibly enjoy. At this time I would like to remind you this is not a time to stop think- ing, but a time to put to good use all the wisdom and knowledge you have accumlated over the past twelve years. Good Luck, Mr. Bradley Brown Dear Seniors, You are entering the adult world much sooner and in a much larger sense than any class that has pre- ceded you. With the right to vote you will almost immediate- ly be able to take part in making decisions that will influence the lives of all of us. We hope that we have done our part to help prepare you for this great responsibility. Please do your part by thinking carefully about the pro- blems that face us before you cast your vote to help decide their solutions. Good Luck, Mr. W. H. Trowbridge To the class of '72 As you near the com- pletion of your stay here at North-Penn I would like to give you this bit of advice: Stay as you are now. The world has enough sober-faced hard wringing adults who are puffed up by their own importance. The ability to smile in our mixed up world is a rare gift indeed. You will have a fuller and richer life ifyou enjoy it and appreciate it's humor. While you are students here most of you are big frogs in a small pond of North Penn. A hole lies beyond the walls of our school, to mark in that world would be your goal. Make us proud of you. Mr. Knaus 35 Graduating Class of 1972, not long ago you entered North Penn High School for the first time. Now you leave us to face the Challenges of today, based on the experience of yesterday. We hope that the foundation you take with you will guide you both in victory and de- feat. For life is a game and you are players upon that field. You have waited for this moment to be free to make your own decisions. Wise or other wise, you must live with these decisions. Not only must you live with these decisions but you must live with other people. I ask that you consider these words of a philosopher; Judge not without knowledge nor without necessity, and, never without love. Mr. Francis Brown To the class of 1972, My congratulations to you for the publication of a fine yearbook and completion of your high school education. From both of these accomplish- ments I trust you have learned that you must earn whatever you want to secure. If you wish wealth, you musteamit. If you want friends you must be a friend. Every person must earn his own success others can help, but the work is his own. Mr. W. J. Snee 36 f-flstoiy DepctAhvt d MR. WARREN MR. MUTO QdtovCfy DepctAihttocb MR. MILLER MR. Qli vMu v Milady's choice and our choice By CHARLIE HUGHES BLOSSBURG — North Penn High School may never be the same when Mrs. Genevieve Sherman retires at the end of the school year. Her students readily admit they will miss her very much. Mrs. Sherman began teaching at the former Covington High School in 1947 and came to North Penn in 1957. A Home Economics teacher, Mrs. Sherman also has taught Science. Students in her home economics classes were taught sewing, cooking, good grooming, etiquette, child care and interior decorating. In addition, for the past 10 years, Mrs. Sherman has been one of the senior class advisers and has been in charge of commencement exercises. She also is the adviser ,to the Future Homemakers of America club at the school and initiated the FHA member’s drive for UNICEF. As a fund-raising activity the senior class conducted a magazine sales drive. Mrs. Sherman was always on had to help and offer advice. This year the class won a radio for attaining a certain level in sales. The class turned the radio over to Mrs. Sherman as a token of their appreciation. Teaching apparently runs in the Sherman family. Mrs. Sherman and her husband Harland reside in Mansfield. Their two sons, William and Richard, teach at Montgomery High School. Their daughter, Mrs. Yvonne Conrad, teaches in Mon- toursville. Mrs. Sherman’s son-in-law is a teacher at Lycoming College. A daughter-in-law is a registered nurse. All are graduates of Mansfield State College. A good way to get to know about Mrs. Sher- man is to talk with her students and associates. “She has always been nice. We think of her as a person and not just a teacher. She’ll talk to us about anything, including our problems. Everybody will be sorry to see her go — she’s just like one of the family,” said senior Linda I-azouras. “She’s really a big help to the sefiior class,” Gloria Graham said. “A lot of the kids say if it wasn’t for her, graduation would just be a generalized thing. She’s really a great help to us ' and we won’t know what to do without her.” Ninth-grader Ida Woodward said, “I hate to see her go because I’ll really miss her.” Sandy Tripp, a junior, added, “She’s understanding. If there is something you don’t know how to do, you go to Mrs. Sherman. She’s one of the greatest teachers in the school.” Mrs. Susan Unangst, an English teacher, commented, “When I was a student here I had Mrs. Sherman for a teacher and now that I have come back here and work with her I have two different views. One as a student having her help me along and now as a colleague — understanding what I saw before as a student.” “She’s not just a teacher, she’s a friend,” noted senior Debbie Lucas. Debbie Haddow, a junior, said, “She wants us to do our work well so it’s right and in the end we can be proud of what we have done. I’ve had her every year for a teacher and she’s really nice.” Math teacher William Trowbridge, who also is a senior class adviser, had this to say: “As a senior class adviser, there probably wouldn’t have been a successful commencement or a fund raising drive if it hadn’t been for her cooperation and supervision. “As a teacher she has that sincere dedication to the students. She always has their best interests at heart above all. Cooperative, pleasant, un- derstanding — what else can you say? She’s a buddy. And she also has a wonderful sense of humor.” Principal Francis Brown contributed, “She’s quite a person; a sincere, dedicated teacher. Mrs. Sherman is well-organized and has a very fine program in home economics.” When asked what her plans are upon retirement Mrs. Sherman told her students she plans to do some traveling and work around her home. This article is taken from Milady from Star Gazette Our cheerleaders. Past Queens Our crowned queen. North Penn Band. Dancing! It is hard to chose a queen out of a group of girls that are all great looking. This year's candidates included Judy Hall, Lou Ann Labuski, Patty Stachowski, Pauline Bombaski (Second Runner Up), Cindy Machmer (First Runner Up), and Mary Lee Tar- box. The girls were chosen by the senior class and the faculty, and then voted on by the senior high school. Miss Mary Lee Tarbox was crowned this year's Homecoming queen. North Penn 16 Renova 12 North Penn jumped out to a 16-0 first quarter lead. Terry Smith got the first touchdown on an 84 yard run from the scrimmage line. Rick Beach added the extra point. Van Cleveland 'topped Canton’s extra point with a fine tackle. Leonard Mahosky played one of the best games of defense ever seen by North Penn fans. Mark Dalton added to defense as well as Terry Grant. North Penn 0 Wellsboro 26 It was all Wellsboro in this game as the Hornets jumped to a 19-0 first half lead on three North mistakes. All in all, it ended up a 3-4 season for the Panthers, with the victory over Canton a standout game. The Canton game was our biggest win, but also our greatest loss. A senior football player, Rick Beach, was injured in the game and died as a result from the injury. He was a great athlete and will be missed and remembered.
