Crawford He asked life of You: You gave him length of days for ever and ever.' . . . Psalm 21 DEDICATION In Memory of Deborah Sobocinski V V S Like a rose plucked from its stem She was taken from us; But unlike the rose, Her life has just begun. .....L. Smith call a typewriter. Daily life for the seamstress a masterpiece! And I thought Rembrant wasgbod the woodwork Heading home from a long day of study and activity. ADMINISTRATION During the past school year every teacher in your school system has dedicated his full time and talent to the task of helping you make learn- ing desirable, essential and a pleasure .... as it should be. I hope that you have taken advantage of every opportunity to store up knowledge, broaden your vision, strengthen your power to think, and to erase the fear to work. These School Lessons when added to the guidance of the home and the opportunities of the world, produce the whole man. I wish you happiness on your graduation and a wonderful life! Sincerely yours, William Snee High School Principal Education today is yours for the taking. If it costs you something, all the better for it will be more valuable to you. Education today spells progress and advancement in life. Upon graduating from North Penn, do not think that your education has ceased. For even those who do not continue on the higher education, each and every day has many learning experi- ences which if taken as learning experiences will make your life more beautiful and progressive. R. J. Couch Supervising Principal 12 The Challenge Education Part of the class of 1965 will face the challenge of educating others. Teaching our own or someone else's children, we will have the opportun- ity to see young lives grow stranger in the light of truth. Those who take this path of life will be rewarded if they, like our faculty, meet the challenge by teaching how to live this life on earth ... to face its struggle and its strife . . . not just the lessons in a book . . . But how to choose the proper path wherever they may go. One Life High school graduates today face many different challenges. Different ways of life beckon - the business world, the professional world, labor world, the homemaking world. But whatever challenge we meet, we can undertake it with a common spirit of youthful optimism, sharing the same high ideals to reach our goals. We can travel different roads united by the thought that we have but one life to live upon this earth. One life in which to learn so much ... to seek and find and prove our worth. So many things to know and do. So many rosy peaks to climb ... so many pathways to pursue. Responsibility Some of this year's graduates will encounter challenges faced by a typical underclassman. They are challenges characterized by uncertain- ty and apprehension. Some of us will experience a sense of adventure like a freshman's first day on his own in high school. We will be traveling a twisting and winding road with our destination hidden around the curve up ahead. Like the underclassmen, the feeling of newness will be tempered by the weight of responsibility to look up and not down . . . forward and not back . . . and to lend a hand. It sure was ' ood, but I don’t think I should have e.aten it all at once, I had a stomach ache for days. I have to stay in shape for the bijr basketball frame. I’m going to help our Faculty beat the Texas Cowgirls on December 2. Halloween parade. I thought I’d win a prize for my outstanding costume, but I guess the judges didn't see me, I also want to compliment the young artists in our school. Sportsmanship The great challenge of any sportsman, aside from developing athletic skills is obtaining the proper outlook toward good sportsmanship. An individual active in sports must exercise constant control over his emotions and learn to abide by others decisions, although they may not be right. He will learn to accept defeat and victory with equal grace. Above all, high school athletics must strive to learn. It is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. 67 FOOT NP-13 7-Towanda Chaborek and Joseph both scored T.D.'s to give NP a league win and a great wel- come for the new score- board. The game was won in the last four minutes of play. NP-16 O-Penns Valley Players after seeing Penn State-Navy game chalked up victory 2. Tokarz re- ceiving a T.D. pass and out- standing defense by Wheel- er and Modrezejewski sparked the game. NP-0 13-Renova Long aerials brought defeat to NP. Statistic wise NP out gained Renova on the ground 250 yards to 50 yards. Andrews and Mitch- ell played outstanding de- fense throughout the after- noon. (ROW 1) E. Nowak. E. Nowak, C. Brion, H. NP-7 19-Wellsboro Moving ahead of arch-rival Wellsboro by half-time, the boys were a victim of a last quarter surge by the Hornets to stop NP for there first league loss. The kicking of Joseph and pass receiving of Tokarz as well as a fine afternoon turned in by Poncho, Hodder, and Smitty. NP-0 NP held Coudersport till the third quarter when they scored three T.D.'s. 68 27-Coudersport BALL NP-0 20-Southern Area NP traveled to Southern Area to be beaten by a much improved team from last year. Hodder sparked NP defensive work the entire game. NP-36 O-Cowanesque A terrific game was played by all NP players. Joseph gained 1 00 yds. on four carries. One of his carries was a 65 yd. gallop. Cha- borek raced 80 yds. for a T.D. on a punt. NP-16 26-Canton A rugged-fought game was displayed with NP losing out in the final minutes of play. SNAP-SHOTS Outstanding Football Player Xmas Tournament Winners The Challenge . . . Competition Many of the members of the class of 1965 will face challenges similar to those of our advertisers. We will meet with keen competition in the business or professional world; our roads will have many lanes meant for fast travel. However, the businessman has an I opportunity to obey the unwritten rules and stay in his own lane. If he promotes honest dealings and fair trade, he will meet his challenge because .... The span of life was meant for lofty duties, not for selfishness; not to be wiled away for aimless dreams, but to improve ourselves and serve mankind. 79 PATRONS Mrs.Irene Anderson Mr. Mrs. Walter Augustine Mr. Mrs. Harold Berguson Mr. Mrs. William Carlson Mr. Mrs. Bradford Connelly Mr. Mrs. Edward Cornett Mr. Mrs. Ronald J. I started working at Wellsboro Hospital in 2000. My husband is employed by Lycoming County. He works at the landfill in Allenwood, Pa. My hobby is quilting and I have a business called Carol's Cuddle- ups. I go to craft shows and sell quilts and blankets. The last 40 years seem to have gone by really fast. Where does the time go? I spent most of the first years working and running kids to school and games etc. Now they are all grown up and running their kids around. It doesn't seem possible. We just built a new home this last fall through winter. We moved in on Mother's Day. All my kids showed up to help me move. I told them it was the nicest Mother's Day present they could have given me. We didn't move far. We lived at 454 Ostrom Hill Road. We own a farm that we have subdivided off. So we built a new home on a hill just down the road from our old home. I haven’t traveled much only when my youngest daughter's husband was in the Army and we went to see them where ever they were stationed. Linda (Bower) Roupp 99 Chestnut St. P. O. I was married to my best friend for 26 years, then I lost him to a heart attack 8 years ago. We have one son Steven and he has a son Alexander who is the light of my life. He is now 6 years old and a joy to be around. For the last 20 years I have been doing the accounting for a Home Health Agency, and from there I will retire (down the road sometime). Besides working, taking care of my mother and the house, I don't have much free time. But when I do, I head to Georgia to see my grandson. I did make it to St. Thomas a year ago, and it was just beautiful and very relaxing. When retirement does come, I hope to be able to see more of the country (especially Disneyland). When the weather is nice, I like to golf (enjoy it but not good at it). Quilt making, reading, playing on the computer and Atlantic City are among my hobbies. My wife is the former Sharon Pequignot. Our daughters Vanessa and Victoria (twins) will be 21 this June. They are going to have a beer with their dad legally at the Colonial Inn. The girls attended College Misericordia for 2 and 1 2 years and are now at Mansfield University. What have I been doing for the last 40 years??? I flunked out of Mansfield State College (playing cards and driving to the Shingles can cause flunkitis). Worked for Corning Glass (wished I was back in college). Got drafted and didn’t really give a d— (until I landed in Vietnam and again wished I was back in college), returned home and went back to Coming Glass and after about a week I wished I was back in college. So I went to WACC and actually graduated and then asked Mansfield if I could try them again. This time I stayed for more than a semester but graduating but graduating was another story. In my senior year I went to work in the insurance business and for the last 29 years I have been an agent for State Farm Insurance with an office in Wellsboro and one in Westfield. My greatest moment was the birth of my twins on June 26, 1984. I am not ashamed to admit that this dad cried the day they were born. Of course, life has revolved around the twins for the past 20 plus years including for the only time ever I cheered against the North Penn panthers when the girls played against them in basketball and volleyball. I finally graduated from Mansfield in 1982 without attending one class (but that’s another story). I enjoy playing golf and when I retire I would like to have a garden. I also like to collect old memorabilia from my favorite team the Brooklyn Dodgers. Traveling to see this USA will be part of my retirement plans also. I spent time working at various golf courses trying to improve my golf game (an athlete I never was). When the golf game did not get better, I went to work for Rawlings Sporting Goods in 2001, where I am currently employed. My wife Linda teaches and is currently finishing her Master + 30. I stayed on at the college and worked at the Maintenance Department for another year, and could see my life going nowhere. In 1969 I joined the US Navy and was sent to Great Lakes, Illinois for basic training for 8 weeks. I was told before I left Don't Volunteer for Anything , but on the second day there, they were looking for volunteers for the Drill Team . I looked around and thought It can't be any worse than where I am now so I raised my hand. That seemed to be the turning point in my life. We had the best of everything and performed several times a week. When my 8 weeks were up, I was transferred to Millington, Tennessee for additional 6 months of Aviation Electronics Training. When it came time for our first set of permanent orders, the best duty stations were assigned first, then the worst. After all my classmates had received their orders, our chief petty office came back to my desk and asked me Who Do You know up the Chain of Command . I was puzzled by his question and asked Why? . For twenty years he had been waiting to get the orders he was about to hand this young recruit. My orders were for Flight Duty at NAS Mildenhall, England. It was a small detachment of sailors responsible for flying all over Europe to deliver cargo and mail to the fleet. I spent 3 fun filled years there and hated to leave, but I was up for orders again. My next duty station was NAS Oceana, Virginia, where I spent 3 years off and on the Aircraft Carrier USS Forrestal. My next duty station was for 3 years at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas where I was flight crew on the Admirals aircraft. When I left the Navy, I moved to McAllen, Texas where I worked for 3 years for a Cash Register company. I then moved to San Antonio, Texas and worked as Branch Service Manager for Memorex Telex Computers for 16 years, until the company filed bankruptcy. I ran my own Computer Consulting company for 4 years, until one of my clients asked me to become a full time employee. I've been here at Carley McCaw, Inc. for 7 years and maintain our network and do Retirement Plan Administration. Nancy (Winters) We were unafafe to (ocate ‘hfancy. Since that job, most of my working years have been with other church groups locally (Baptist, Presbyterian and for the past 11 years, Wesleyan). I was also employed by the Mental Health Mental Retardation office in Sayre Towanda and with a local trucking firm. I have most enjoyed my work with the churches though. I presently serve as Global Ministries' Director at Christ Wesleyan Church in Milton. My husband and I have led several disaster relief teams to do reconstruction projects on homes destroyed by Hurricanes Hugo and Andrew and the flooding in the mid-West. That gave us a taste for mission work and we both have very much enjoyed going with our church to various places to do mission work. As part of my current job, I coordinate and assist in leading mission teams to the Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Dominican Republic, many trips to Guatemala and we're looking at some new opportunities possibly in Nicaragua, Mozambique, Germany and Zambia. I learned how to roof as well as various other construction trades but roofing has been my favorite. As a result of these trips, I have been involved with our local chapter of American Red Cross and presently serve as their Disaster Services Coordinator. Most recently, I oversaw the operations of a mass care shelter for those displaced by the flooding this past fall in our area. This past December (3 days before Christmas) we welcomed our first grandson and he is really the joy of my life! I have the privilege of caring for him two days a week and I try very, very hard not to spoil him too awfully much. My husband is now retired but I'm hoping to be able to continue my work for a long time yet. I'm just not ready to go the retirement scene quite yet. Robert Zuchowski 391 Sing Sing Road Lot 39 Horseheads, NY 14845 Res - 607-796-928 bzuchowski@stny.rr.com I have two wonderful children, Dana, my daughter, who is married, lives in Elmira, and is an occupational therapist at St. Joseph's Hospital. Devin, my son, works at Firestone in Lewiston, NY near Niagra University, and is currently going to CDL school. As for me, I retired three years ago from teaching elementary school in Corning, NY after 33 years. Retirement is wonderful and never enough time to do all that I want to do. Currently , I own a small DJ service and play for weddings and parties, work at a winery pouring wine for wine tasting, and hand paint glassware. But the activity that occupies most of my time is being in two Drum and Bugle Corps, one competitive and one alumni corps. It has been great getting back to playing music and I got my start at Blossburg Elementary with Myron Mayer. Thank you, Myron I!!!!!! My time is well consumed juggling rehearsals for both groups, doing parades, and field shows all the way from St. Petersburg, Florida to Belleview, Canada. But I enjoy it all immensely. Life is grand!!!!!! Statistically Sneaking • At least 18 of the 75 members of our class served in the armed forces. That's 24%!! • Being brought up in a conservative area, we must have gotten the idea that marriage was the way to go, because of the 75 class members at least 64 have been married at least once. There are 70 surviving members of our class. We believe we had viable addresses for 68 of them. • We currently can be found as far west as California and Oregon and as far south as Alabama. But most of us didn't stray far from home. 46 out of 68, still live in Pennsylvania...33 currently living in Tioga County! Of the 68 that we can find, no directory has had any additional information from 2 class members. For this directory, another 5 classmates did not respond to email or mail and could not be reached by phone. Of the remaining 61, four classmates did not wish to contribute to the directory. The rest of the statistics are based on the responses of those 57 classmates. • We have passed our DNA on to 103 children...59 boys and 44 girls These children have gone on to produce 86 ...and counting... grandchildren! • The most common occupation...teaching. Thirteen from the class of 1965 spent some time in FRONT of the classroom. • The most unusual occupation: fingerprint technician and examiner. • Most glamorous sounding: starting in advertising in tv broadcasting... currently an account executive with Cox Communications.M • Most environmental: organic farming • Most surprising void: no medical doctors! • Twenty classmates identify themselves as retired or semi-retired, that's 35% ! Aren't we a bit young for retirement!?! • Aside from the blackboard incident, most common memory: JFK assassination (MemorabCe ECigfi ScfiooC Experiences Gerald (Jerry) Anderson: Actually the single most traumatic day I can remember is sitting in Mrs. Shaw’s class taking a test and hearing the news of JFK’s assassination. Nancy Aston Bullock: OF COURSE IT WOULD BE THE HAND THROUGH THE BLACKBOARD!!!!!!! I also remember very vividly mixing up the birthday of a certain person with Pearl Harbor day and having to stand on a chair in the middle of class and recite the right date. Our senior prom had to be one of the best too. Our decorations and the fact that the whole class attended was terrific. On a much sadder note I also recall the devastation of the death of Debbie Sobocinski in a car accident. Ester Mayes Harer: Not sure what my favorite school experience was. I guess I am very conscious of how the things have changed since we were in school. I started in a one-room schoolhouse, moved to Covington went to the big time (OR so I thought at the time) then later on to Bloss for some more experiences. I still remain friends with several of my classmates even after this many years. John Willis: I would have to say that my most memorable school experiences were the GIRLS!!! Nancy Winder [Winters?], Debbie Sobocinski, Dusty Johnson, Judy Lamb and Cheryl Thomas [Hall?] were (as my Son would say) so HOT !!! And that French Teacher!!! Unfortunately, I was a skinny, geeky, red headed, freckle faced kid and didn't stand a chance. But my time finally came when I met my wife of 14 years here in San Antonio. Junior Coons: I guess I don't have any favorite experience. Being from Covington and going to Bloss, seems like everyday was an experience... lol. Damn...I sure miss those days. Sally Sherwood Garman: As I look forward to this reunion, I am flooded with good memories - how about evening ice skating on the school parking lot, or going to the school gym on Saturdays, or Mabel's after school, or the time the girls went in the pool hall, dances after basketball games, roller skating, riding the bus to Covington in 6th grade...........I don't remember the blackboard incident - maybe I was absent that day! Ken Leone: What was my most memorable moment in school? Either the junior or senior prom we were decorating the gym. I was holding an extension ladder to put decorations up in the ceiling of the gym. My helpers were 3 or 4 girls whose job it was to pull up the extension with a rope and make sure it was secure when it reached the ceiling girders by letting the extension part of the ladder down slowly until locked on one of the rungs. When the ladder reached the girders, the girls forgot to slowly let the extension down to be sure it was secure on a rung and let go of the rope and the extension part of the ladder dropped until it landed on my toes (the extension probably only moving at about 60 mph when it hit my toes). Thanks girls. You know who you are!!!! Carl Brion: I do not have a most memorable experience from those High School years, my best summation would be I had fun!!! Gene Nowak: Sorry Dusty, Ed Cornett has to be it! Beyond that, I can't remember what I did yesterday! To be honest, knowing each one of you has to be my most memorable experience. Memories are made of this . Liz Carlson Naylor My first Prom with Bill Hall in 10th grade. Mom made me get my hair permed and it was terrible. Then it rained the whole nite and even looked worse!!!!!!!!!!!! Gown was nice though. Joanne Mayer Schweinsberg: Most memorable would have to be when the student teacher came into our chemistry class and told us that President Kennedy was shot. On a lighter note...Tom Kuster accidentally turning his new class ring silver with mercury during Chemistry...Marching band, concert band, dance band...Christmas caroling in sub-zero weather. . . Mrs. Sherman’s home room winning first place in the Christmas decorating contest with our ceiling full of snowflakes... Math club trip to Lock Haven to see the paper mill and Piper Cub factory...going to the science fair at Bucknell... Dances at the church halls...making “rocks” with Christine Kaminski for the prom and of course the prom itself.. . sleep overs at Dusty’s...graduation all night party... Cheryl Hall Hasselman: Shorthand and Bookkeeping classes with Craig Smith. Maggie Lamberson Knaus: It is difficult to pick one favorite experience or memory. I remember Gus Marano coming to the classroom to say goodbye to our class when he was leaving Blossburg. The all night party after graduation was a good time. Mike Strange: Let’s start with one of my least favorite: getting punched in the stomach by Butch Patterson because, without my knowledge, my cousin Joe and Stan Levindowski (sp? sorry Stan) had dropped a water balloon on him from my bedroom window. In a moment of understandable panic, Joe told Butch that I was the one who had done it. Ouch! Another forgettable experience was losing the Student Council President election to Dennis Strouble—just because he was smarter, more organized, and more popular than me. How shallow can high school students get? Some of my favorites: playing softball in gym class with Mr. Kahler, dancing with Judy Rogers at the Odd Fellows Hall, dating Dusty Johnson, and most of all, goofing off with my best pals Tom Kuster and Mark Passmore. Mike Joseph: Several come to mind, all unprintable. Dusty Johnson McMillian: Those wild dances at the island Park over the summer - hot, sweaty and loud - best!!! Student government with Dennis Strouble. The Kennedy-Nixon election. Wow -1 campaigned for Barry Goldwater? What was I thinking???? OHHHHHH - and how could I not talk about the BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We did have the very best times - the percussion always was the best and it was a very prominent part of our high school exp. And the cheerleading - all those games and practices and pulled muscles. We did have a great time. I do also remember all the car accidents though and if those people can be mentioned somewhere, that would be good - Debbie Sobosinski; Larry Makeley; Bobbie House (a yr ahead), more that I have forgotten. I still remember going to Debbie’s funeral on the hill behind Bloss - sure made an impression. Donna Stevens: My favorite experience was playing the clarinet in the band grades 6-12 and going to different sporting events, marching in the Laurel Festival and on Memorial Day, going to West Point and County and District Bands. Bob Davies: The most striking things about growing up in Blossburg is that I never realized how great an area facilities and people we had until I left the area and saw what other communities had. Judy Weller Dowling: Her most memorable HS experience was the death of Debbie Sobocinski. Judy shared a locker with Debbie - she remembers the kindness of Mr. Cornett - and still misses Debbie. Judy Rogers Maring: Judy also very much remembers Debbie's death - but also remembers Sunday evenings at the movies, and the toboggan accident she, Dusty, and I [Sally] had out on the old strip mines! Or how about the talent show with the 3 chipmunks - remember that??? Tom Kuster I really can't recall my most memorable school experience, but it may be Ed Cornet putting his hand through the blackboard now that I have been reminded! Linda McNeal: My favorite moments from North Penn - and there are many - are of Bobby Davies and his many pranks - torturing poor Mrs. Lawson in English class and the thumbtacks in Mr. Miller's chair in Biology class. Christine Kaminski Smith: The most memorable, I must agree was our class from 7th grade till graduation. We were close and enjoyed one another. We always had a great time, in school or out. We may not communicate for years at a time but I feel that closeness is still there. Pete Mogush: Pete remembers graduation... in particular the all night party afterward. He and Bob Davies left the party at 4am and took off for New York City to see some relative of Bob’s. They got lost and it took them over 8 hours to get to their destination! Tom Manikowski: Lyle Pequignot hitting foul balls onto the street... Bill Payne and Donovan Van Druff trading hunting and fishing stories ... Learning the New Math from Mr. Morano and Mr. Trowbridge ... Basil Foster Dick Johnson Richard Colegrove Claude and Quillmer!! - Where are they now? Larry Hayes: Larry remembers a day when they tried to see how many kids they could get on the top of Pete Mogush’s car. He thinks they had about 13 and they were driving down the street when they were stopped by the police. They all had to pay a part of the fine... but he thinks it was only about 15 cents each! Ed Berguson: Ed remembers when Mr. Miller put him in the corner to take a test because Billy Hall was trying to copy off his paper. Stan Levandoski: Some of my most memorable experiences during high school: the Assassination of JFK, the dances at St. Mary’s Church and Prom night of 1964. Carol Boinski Mitstifer I really don’t have a most memorable school experience (except for Mr. Cornet putting his hand through the blackboard) I don’t think any of us will forget that. I remember a lot of things -the dances, talent shows, games, proms, graduation. Everything was memorable to me. I really do think our class was special. We had a great group of kids who turned into a great group of adults. Every class should be so lucky. John Roupp: John enjoyed high school but has no particular memory that stands out. Linda Bower Roupp: Linda and John started dating when they were juniors in high school. She remembers that everyone used to call them “The Lovebirds”. Jackie Behrman Fleming: The high school experience that impacted me the most was the sad loss of good friend Deb Sobocinski. Lyle Pequignot: Lyle particularly remembers 8m grade. He described it as a hilarious class during the days of fake puke and stickem gum that made you look like you had a mouthful of cement. In particular he remembered the students putting stickem caps under the chairs in Mrs. Lawson’s English class. When the students shoved the chairs under the desks, all the caps went off! He also remembers John Willis putting a tack on Mr. Miller’s chair during Physics class. Bill Payne: Bill fondly remembers Mrs. Sherman and her kindness to our class. Judy Watkins Nowak: Judy remembers the pen pals we had in England! But otherwise, had no particular high school memories. Carol Johnson: Memories of my high school years. I wish I could say that I had some good memories but what I do remember is being extremely shy and not being part of any clique. I had few friends and am amazed that anyone remembers that I was a part of the Class of 1965. Don Strailey: Don's memorable moment is the assassination of President Kennedy. Donavan VanDruff: Don remembers road trips to Canton and that everyone liked his sweaters. He says, “My mother bought me entirely too many sweaters!” Joan Perry Yeager Joan remembers that there were many nice things about high school. In particular, she remembers home economics and the class making jumpers because had such a hard time with the sewing. Dennis Strouble: My most memorable experience at NPHS was hearing the announcement that JFK had been shot while in the Chem. Lab. Edie Berguson Sindlinger My most memorable times in school were my cheerleading days. Also one particular event stands out in my mind. It was during a test for Mr. Cornett. In the midst of the test Mike Joseph spoke out that he was positive he had lost a contact lens and it had fallen on the floor. All those around his desk scrambled to the floor frantically searching for his lens. He finally realized he had both lenses in one eye! That event certainly lightened the mood in the room. Dori Signor Staron: I spend a lot of time reading. I think I got my love of books from working with Katherine Guy in the library at North Penn. She made you want to read every book you could. I listen to a lot of different kinds of music and I thank Mr. Mayer for that. Some of my favorite times in school were music lessons and band. Sue Brion Forsburg: She remembers Mr. Davis, the student teacher...a geeky kind of guy, coming into chemistry with Mr. Warren. He sat down next to Sue and whispered to her that President Kennedy was shot and was probably dead, pretty much putting her in shock! She also remembered going to first grade, Miss Ditchburn's class, and everyone else already knew one another (had their friend’s) because they had been to Kindergarten together. Mary McNamara Ramos: What I remember most are the friends. And, of course, the Kennedy assassination. Connie and Howie Hodder: It isn’t really a school experience, but the death of President John F. Kennedy is one of the things we remember the most We would like to thank all of you who emailed, mailed and talked to us on the phone. Without your participation this directory wouldn’t have Seen possible. We hcpe that you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. You are a very special group!
