Fuss, NY. XX'c1ng.1rtncr. 5. Hcndricks. li. lican. Eiatnrg nf The North Penn 'Iointure is more than just a realityg it is an active. growing concern. The first graduating class. the class of '56, is living proof of the wisdom and foresight of those who first envisioned the jointure. Nearly ten years ago. it became evident that the present school systems were inadequate and limited by outmoded equipment. ln May of 19-19 the hrst step was taken when some of the eight districts now in the jointure met with the idea of creating a new and better secondary school. For a time the idea lay dormant in the minds of all but a few. since disserlsion among the residents of the area. temporarily halted progress. However. differences were finally re- solved. and work began in earnest toward realization of the dream. ln 1952 a joint School Board contracted Howell Lewis Shay and Associates as the architects. Because of the inability of the Board to borrow suthcient funds for the project. it was found necessary to form the North Penn joint Authority. Legal compli- I., Kriebcl. NY. XX'hitman. XX'. Eniniurr cations delayed further action until in April. 195-1. the Authority received bids and signecl contracts for the construction. lt is recorded that ground was broken on june 14. 19541 that the school opened Septem- ber 1-1. 1955. that the cornerstone was laid October 26. 1955 and that the newly completed building was dedicated on December 19. 1955. But history does not tell of the long hours given by the building committee. the boards. the authority. nor the many meetings with archi- tects and personnel. Nor does history pay its proper tribute to Ralph R. Smith. who. from the conception of the jointure. worked ener- getically toward its formation and acceptance. Most important. history does not record the solidarity created with the construction of a modern school. and the cooperative efforts of pupils and teachers working together to make the story of the North Penn 'Iointure an even greater success.
