Withey - Trustee, Mr. Joseph M. Ferrell - Secretary, Dr. Cole S. Brembeck -- retiring Superintendent, Mr. Wayne Eikenberry - incoming Supertintendent, Mr. Marion Bradbury, Jr. 1 President, Mr. Charles S. Prescott 1 Trustee, Mrs. John P. Sheldon - Treasurer. They turn the Key . . . The class of 54 is indeed fortunate to have had Dr. Cole S. Brembeck as superintend- ent during their last three years of high school. Through his outstanding leadership we, the seniors, and other students now have but to live up to the high standards he has set. All of us are grateful for his fine guidance and leadership, and we wish him all the luck in his new position. We also would like to welcome Mr. Wayne Eikenberry, whose warm friendship has given the seniors the desire to experience more of his fine leadership. To Mr. Eikenberry, we wish also to say, Good luck in your new position. We realize now that we have not lost a great friend, but have gained two. The person who has contributed much to the thoughts and ideals of the students and given them advice and counsel is Mr. Dunsmore. To us, he has given a philosophy which has con- tributed toward making us happier individuals. Many are familiar with his statement, lt is not the amount of potential you have, but how you use it. The seniors are fortunate to have experienced the fine leadership of a person whose influence has given us the desire to accomplish our goals and ideals. May North Muskegon High School continue under such excellent leadership for many years to come. Not to be overlooked are the secretaries. The entire school could not function without the efforts of Mrs. Barbara Cole lregistrarl in the high school office and Miss Louise Joldersma lclerk to the Boardl in the main office. Our Sincere thanks for the help they have rendered. While not many of us come into frequent contact with the Board of Education or are familiar with its functions, it is the governing body of our school. All we can do is thank these citizens who give their time freely and willingly for the betterment of the North Mus- kegon High School. 7 Dr. Brembeck - Superintendenf, Miss Joldersma - Clerk . . . and Open the Door . . . I Our Election Assembly a 5 ? -, Q 1, S ff K g f:,-'Q,'-.- ,:- l6 Our Student Government Our student body got the Student Council off to an excellent start this year by selecting four very capable officers. After much campaign- ing, in the annual fall elections, these students were elected: Tom Arntz, president, Dave Bliss, vice-president, Diane Wilkie, secretary, George LeFevre, treasurer. Red Emery became the treasurer at the beginning of the second sem- ester when George LeFevre changed schools. The Student Council again had a full schedule of activities, sponsoring assemblies, planning after-game dances, and chartering student bus- es for sports events. Also, it helped to have the P.A. system in the gym repaired. As the completion of the school year neared, the Council discussed proiects, two were suggested, buying a proiector, or buying an automatic record player for the school. To obtain member- ship one must have a B or better average schol- astically and be rated highly for character, leadership, and service to the school. The soci- ety is composed of 1070 of the Senior class and 57, of the Junior class, being elected in the spring. Although the society's main aim is to give recognition to students who have done well in their studies, they also try to be constructive in their proiects. This year, to raise money for their main proiect, the members checked coats at dances, sold milk at noon hour and coke at basketball games. They also sponsored an aft- er-game dance and the Crusade for Clothing drive in school. The money from these proiects was donated to charity. At the end of the year, the society held a beach party in coniunction with the Student Council. , .X wscgr' ul X1 get . at Clara Jo Matych welcomes new members -- Mary Halfpap, Elaine Schooley, Alison Olding, Nan Ahlberg, Diane Wilkie, Jane VanderPloeg, Carol Prescott, Margaret Ginn, and Dove Couch. After a slow first half, which ended in a O to O deadlock, the Norse came back with Stan Guy scooting 85 yards for the first of 4 touchdowns. A powerful Luding- ton team invaded the Northside field intent on beating the Norse for the third straight year, but were turned back by a powerful Norse at- tack to the tune of 25-7. The first conference game brought down the Scottville Spartans who went down under a powerful, well-oiled Norse offense, and a stub- born defense by the score of 41-O. The Norse then traveled to Hart where they stepped over their second conference foe 28-7. Dick Schuit- eman, pile-driving fullback, sparked the Norse offense. The usually powerful Norse of- fense sputtered and the usually stout defense went down under two long runs. The game ended in a T2-12 tie for the only mar on the Norse record. The Norsemen then downed the Shelby Tigers at the Northside field to gain another step up the conference ladder, The scoreboard read 47-7. To cap their season, the Norse went to Montague, where they cinched the conference crown. Expert blocking by a powerful line led by Co-Captains Ed Stelle and Tom Arntz, opened holes through which Norse backs scampered for amazing yardage. The Norse air attack, with Arntz and Dave Bliss being the receivers, was also an important factor as the Norse won their 2nd straight conference crown. .-...J--1, .Y ,.a..........., That's our Guy! ll5 99,3-gg W4 Dad's Night . . . and the proud fathers take to the bench. Varsity Basketball The Norsemen started their season this year against Montague, a conference opponent, and came out on top of a 44-41 score which barely edged a tall and determined Wildcat five. After only one practice session to go over the rough spots, the Norse tackled Coopersville, a non- conference team, and went down under a terrific barrage by the Bronco's front line, 53-48. The Norse then traveled to Shelby where they showed the conference teams iust what they were capable of doing by smothering the oppos- ition, 64-44. For the next game the Norse invited a powerful hoop squad from across the lake, the Catholic Central Crusaders, and beat them by only one point in a breath-taking game, 62-61. Neither team relinquished the game until the final point had been scored. West Michigan Christian came over for one of the novel games of the season which was played in the afternoon. The Norsemen couldn't seem to get going and as a result came out on the short end of a 52-44 score. Right after Christmas vacation, the Norse barely edged the Scottville Spartans in o close battle, 39-34. The Fremont Packers, combined with a large floor, flooded the Norse under a barrage of baskets from the fast-break offense which they use and trounced them severely, 67-47. ln their next contest, the Norsemen set a new school record by scoring 81 points against 44 for Whitehall. The Norse then lost a heartbreoker to their traditional rivals, the Hart Pirates. The score of the game was 68-65. This game marked the end of the first half of conference play 22 and North Muskegon was in second place with Hart first. Next, playing the finest game they had played all season, Montague dropped the Norse from second place in the con- ference by a score of 48-46. The Shelby Tigers went down again before a squad of Norsemen who were out to show everyone that their loss to Montague wasn't habit-forming. The Tigers were beaten by a score of 77 to 61. The Norse then beat the Fremont Packers 62-57. The Scottville Spartans also went down under Norse fire 51 to 37. White- hall was next on the agenda and was beaten by the Norse squad 51 to 47. The next game was literally one for the books, Records were a dime a dozen, and they fell almost that cheaply. First in falling was the individual point record which was broken by big Walt Busker with a nice 30 points. Next to fall was the team point record when the team rolled up B4 points. The team also broke the 29 game winning streak which was held by Hart, This game was the Hart game which the Norsemen won 84 to 69. The game ended the regular season but the Norse .still had the tournaments to go. In the first round of the tournaments the Norsemen found the big floor too much for them and lost to Fremont, 48-42. Six seniors will graduate from the team this year. Two of the six were two thirds of the high scoring combination. They are Tom Arntz and Walt Busker. Gordon Odell, a junior, made up the other one third. The four other seniors are Red Emery, Dave Couch, Leonard Green, and Ed Stelle. The boll's put back in motion Len Green does a nice job guarding. The 1954 Cinder Squad tackled some tough op- position during the season. They had meets with Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, Grand Haven, and con- ference opponents. Coming back from the 1953 squad to perform for Coach Bunks was a nuceleus of lettermen, led by co-captains Dave Couch, ace quartermiler, and Red Emery, senior high hurdler, Other lettermen were Stan Guy, Landon Hughes, Alan McKee, Dave Nelson, Tom Arntz, and Dick Ret- erstoff. Although hampered by not having a track in North Muskegon, the Norsemen did very well through- out the season. Again this year the team finished second behind Whitehall in the conference meet. At the regional meet, Dave Couch, Dave Nelson, Tom Arntz, Stan Guy, Red Emery, and Alan McKee qual- ified to enter the class B state meet at Lansing. Records broken during the year were also a special kind of success for these boys. Stan Guy broke the shot-put and pole vault records and ran on the record smashing 880 yard relay team with Red Emery, Dave Couch, and Alan McKee. Tom Arntz bettered his own mark in the high iump and Alan McKee set a new time in the 220 yard dash. Red Emery tied the former high hurdle mark. 127 5 - i r i i Ron Wilke clears the bar. North Muskegon's baseball team finished the season with six wins against four losses, which gave them a good second in the conference. Winning the opener from Montague 2-O, the team went into a three game losing streak. The Norsemen put an end to the three game slump and went on to win every one of the remain- ing conference games. The Golf team did not fare quite as well as the other teams did this year, but every team has its off seasons. Although the boys did not win a match, the maiority of the matches were close. This season will not shed a dim light on next year's season, however, because there will be many good golfers back under the fine coaching of John Halmond. Golf wcsn't meant to be a funny game, but a lot of golfers say it is. At North Muskegon, it's funny for one reason, Ray Ramsey. Other seniors on the team were Larry Olson and Al- lan Engstrom.
