It portrayed a relevant message useful to us all: In the rush of our lives, often we forget to take delight in what is simple joy. The play was directed by Miss Denise Booher and Mrs. Diana Hoke. Together, they produced an enjoyable portrayal of TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON. Mrs. Hoke and Miss Booher award Sherry Cooksey for her outstanding role as Miss Higa Jiga. I 11 ORIENTAL AUTUMN featuring BACKSTREET NOVEMBER 10,1979 The last of the seventies proved to be a memorable year for many of the students at North Montgomery. One of the more personal attractions was the annual Sunshine-Key Club dance. This years theme was an Oriental Autumn. The dance was held on November 10, 1979 and lasted from nine p.m. till twelve midnight. Backstreet provided the music as 100 couples danced their way through an evening of awesome wonderment. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the king and queen. Gary Quigg and Penni Brock were awarded the title. Eight other candidates and attendants made up the couples court. The atmosphere produced a romantic glow of Japanese lanterns and bright, colorful flowers. The work put into making the dance a success was portrayed in the eyes of those who came to enjoy the festivities of an Oriental Autumn. above: Last years Queen, Sandy Beck, Crowns Penni. The races and field events were very closely contested with McCutcheon and West Lafayette dominating the first places. The eight competing schools were: Benton Central, Crawfordsville, Covington, McCutcheon, West Lafayette, Seeger, Southmont. All seven and the host Chargers used this track meet as a “tune up for the upcoming track season. 18 Court: C. Quimby, K. Thompson, C. McDaniel, L. Radcliff, L. May We Meet In Gloccamora One Fine Day! 21 WAS IT WELL MAYBE GO HOME C'VILLE! The Chargers have chanted this at the Athenians every sectional. C'ville did go home after sectional, as did McCutcheon and Southmont. The Chargin Chargers were victorious after defeating Southmont, 46-36, and McCutcheon, 42-38. Friday and Saturday night proved to be very exciting; the gym ehcoed with hopes of victory from the parents, fans and, certainly not least, the Charger Rowdies and pep block. The fans' encouragement payed off for Senior Tom Price, scoring 22 points against Southmont, and Denny Webster, scoring 13 points in both the Friday and Saturday night performances. The following Saturday more excitement was in store for the Chargers. After a week of great spirit, hard practices, and endless interviews, the Chargers traveled in a large caravan to Frankfort. After a hard fought overtime battle, the Chargers beat a well prepared Zionsville team 40-37. The night game ended in overtime also, but unfortunately the Chargers were beaten by Clinton Central 46-44. The two weekends will be remembered in the hearts and minds of many people. The theme was based on the prohibition times during the twenties complete with floozies and gangsters. This years king and queen of the prom were Christi Quimby and Bruce Rush. Christi was crowned by last years queen, Kim Myers who was escorted by Al Enlow. The band, Late Show, filled the air with music as the king and queen of 1980 were honored with a dance. Everyone soon joined in making the evening an enjoyable one. Christi and Bruce, A night to remember. Twenty-one students, under the supervision of Sehora Mary Gumz, took a seven day tour of the Yucatan Pennisula in Mexico. The group first visited the pyramids of Uxmal (4) where they explored the ruins of the highly intelligent Mayan civilization. The surrounding area was scattered with Mexican huts made of sticks and the landscape was engulfed with dry grass and bushland where strange inhabitants lived in the banana trees (3). The hotel accomodations, however, were very tropical. (1). The group then visited Merida where they bargained in the marketplace. From here they ventured to Chichen Itza where they saw the Ball Court, El Castillo, and the Thousand Columns (2). The final three days were spent on an island in the Carribean, Cozumel. The temperature was a hot 110° and the students enjoyed lounging around the pool at the hotel (5), deep sea fishing, Dancing the night away, and being sex gods and goddesses on the beach (7). Every one kept a journal of all their memorable experiences. But much to the dismay of Mrs. Gumz, the journals were vague or neglected totally, Que Lastima! Awards Valdictorian . . . Winning a majority of their games gave them an edge as they entered sectional play. This edge proved to be the deciding factor in the sectional played at Western Boone. The final game of the tournament was played between the Chargers and the Stars. Both teams were well-prepared and gave the game their best shot. However, the Charger girls came out winners while taking the sectional crown. The girls basketball regional was held the following Saturday at North Montgomery. After a hard-fought battle, the Chargers were beaten by McCutcheon. Four girls made the All- Conference team for the 1979- 1980 season: Mari Wray, Susan Fike, Debbie Peebles, and Marsha Ryker. The Girl's Track and Field Team compiled a 6 win-fe loss regular season record and was successful in defending both the Montgomery County and the Sagamore Conference titles. Gaining much needed experience throughout the season, the young team displayed steady improvements. School record performances by Amy Hildebrand in the high jump, and Shelly Smith in the discus throw highlighted the short season delayed by the cold rains of April. The Charger ladies were led by senior tri-captains Rhonda Barnett, Jill Harshbarger, and Robin Guard. Barnett established a school record for the low hurdles at the new 100 meter distance to highlight her final season. Harshbarger qualified for sectional competition in three different events and was able to advance to the regional level as a member of the medley relay quartet. Guard, unable to compete during the outdoor season due to health reasons, was also a school record holder in the high jump and was the spirit leader when unable to compete. At the awards banquet Corinne Linginfelter was the Most Improved trophy winner and Lisa Norton was selected as the athlete with the best Mental Attitude. Having run sprints and middle distance races with supurb performances, Stacey Coleman was selected by her team mates as Ms. Track for the 1980 season. All the bands at one time or another have participated in contests, and walked away with many first and second place awards Each year the Marching Band marches at all the home football games as well as participating in the DePauw Band Day and the ISU Homecoming Parade. The Symphonic Band sells magazines each fall as well as presenting four concerts and performing at graduation. The Charger Brass and Stage Bands perform at many community happenings. The Pep Band plays at all home Basketball games. Mr. Hiller must pick all of the music for these groups and rehearses until the parts are perfected. We, the students, will miss Gary Hiller, but are glad we had a chance to work under his Baton. 98 Two Great Coaches Coaching has been one of Chuck Kriston's major contributions to North Montgomery H.S. since its opening in September of 1971. He takes his coaching seriously by not only giving his boys the fundamental skills in basketball, but also giving them a mental attitude to carry through not only sports activities but through life itself. He instills in them a pride and respect for their fellow team members, school, community, and most importantly, those that they deal with most closely in every day life. His record over the nine year period stands an impressive 109-91. Mr. Kriston relates well with his students as shown above. Here he is embracing a spirited cheerleader after sectionals. He also conducts himself as a gentleman on the floor as seen at left. The entire school community will miss the spirit, compassion, friendship, and genuine character of Chuck Kriston as seen in his coaching responsibilities at North Montgomery. 99 Administration King Crosier mounts his majestic stallion. Much of this regeneration of spirit was due to the Girl's Pep Block and the newly formed Charger Rowdies. The Charger Rowdies (alias the Boy's Pep Block) surprised the crowd with their booming voices, hilarious cheers, and obscure floor antics. With the help of the Girl's Pep Block and the Varsity Cheerleaders, the Rowdies backed our Chargers to the fullest. Varsity Cheerleaders-T. Ward, C. Quimby, T. Priest, L. Ratcliff, G. Quigg, J. Virgin, D. McCormick, D. Brooks, T. Hutchison, T. Foster, H Britton, K. Thompson, N. Karle, and R Snellenbarger. VARSITY VITALITY The girl and guy Varsity Cheerleaders had an exciting and busy year. The girls started out the year last summer winning the Grand Champion Award at the Anderson Dynamic Cheerleader's Camp and first place at the Boulevard Mall competition. While the girls were collecting their hardware, the guys were organizing the infamous Charger Rowdies. The squads had the thrill of backing the Charger spikers to the State Finals and both the guys and gals basketball teams in their quests for the coveted regional crowns. It was a year full of excitement, laughter, and great fun for all. Using Their Heads For the Chargers—R. Snellenbarger, N Karle, H. Britton, G. Quigg, T. Hutchison, J. Virgin and D. McCormick. The group, which consisted of 30 singers, a stage crew of 23, and an 8 piece ensemble, placed sixth in the competition receiving a participation plaque and a beautiful trophy. This means the group will automatically be returning next year to the contest. CONGRATULATIONS! 124 Key Club of North Montgomery left: S. Craft, J. Cotton, B Burgess, Mr. Ed Stuffle, T Bannon, D Mennen, J. Virgin, D. Maxwell Key Club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Ed Stuffle, was very active this year, in their effort to help out in the surrounding communities. Along with co- sponsoring the fall dance, Oriental Autumn, basketball dances and football dances, the group also participated in useful projects to aid those who are not as fortunate as us, such as their collection of money for mental health during the Yuletide season. During this time the Key Club also participated in the Crawfordsville Parade, (As seen below.) Key Club has also been active in paperdrives. The students collect old newspapers, magazines, and any other form of unused paper and turns them in for recycling. This is a chance for them to make a little money for their treasury and also helps the economy. At the end of the year, the club held a banquet for the parents, speakers, and all those who contributed to the Key Club of North Montgomery. It was a wonderful evening and ended up as a total success. Key Club Officers Joe Virgin-Pres. Scott Craft-V.P. Brian Burgess—Sec. Mike Newhouse—Treas. Starting with an inexperienced sponsor and a young staff, we began the 1980 CHARGER FLASHBACK. I remember the ads campaign and trying to make up a $500.00 deficit from the previous year. Just think of all those days we just didn't want to work, but knew we had to. Then the thunder hit, we lost our editor and luckily Rene came in to take over the post. I remember Michelle suffering through the senior section and her endless trips to Fox Photo. I think back to Krista thinking, My Gosh! I have to lead this group next year. ... or watching Christi suffer through trying to write copy for events she knew nothing about. I also remember Meri hoping she had all the clubs photographed and Jacquie trying to get through the sophomore section. The thing I remember the most is two weeks before our final deadline, Mark had his camera stolen. Thanks to his persistence, we still got the pictures we needed. It's been a busy year, but I feel the book is excellent in all respects. I do want to give a special thanks to Julie Mendenhall for her support throughout the year. Staff, I just want to say thank you for ail your work and determination. I will always have fond memories of the North Montgomery Newstand! She has been a diligent worker and has put forth many years of service to this school. Mrs. Mutterspaugh spent most of her time working in the library and is said to have made the vertical file what it is today. Mrs. Mable Mutterspaugh has been a helping hand to all those who needed guidance and direction. She has remained a favorite of the students as well as the faculty in all the years in which she has been associated with North Montgomery High School. Although she is leaving us, we will hold her presence in our hearts. So it is our privilege to honor Mrs. Mutterspaugh by extending our thanks through this book, Charger Newstand and wish her the best of luck in future positions. 190 knowing each for what it is; not expecting more, not accepting less; living each day to its fullest, filling my heart with memories; for this day may be my last-or the first day of a new beginning. — Sarah Camp 191
