Man has always found it necessary to have strong bodies as well as strong minds. Our athletic program provides students from our school with an opportunity to develop sound bodies. Progress covers all areas, it is not confined to the classroom alone. We have experienced equally as much growth on our athletic fields as we have in academic fields. As our school was growing, the perfect outlet for student enthusiasm was in athletic contests. Students on the sidelines were able to participate just as actively as the players on the field through their school spirit. School spirit, an essential component of each student's personality, is the yardstick that measures the degree of interest students display in their school. Student participation grew with renewed excitement as each new victory was accumulated for North Miami Senior High. Victories are easily well received, but our young sports teams had to learn to accept defeat as well. With each new year came more experienced players, players who excelled in sportsmanship, who enjoyed athletics with no idea of reward. However, the rewards are an integral great part of athletics, not only the tangible trophies, but also more lasting ideals, which are instilled through sports programs. Participation on teams teaches the important lessons of cooperation and teamwork. Realizing a single person is just one part of the entire team, whether it is a school, community, or a national team, puts our society in a perspective for the students. They realize this necessity of sharing their talents to work for the goal of the entire team, not just their individual successes. Achievement comes through fair play and teamwork. This teamwork in sports as well as academic life has contributed greatlyto our first decade of progress.

Varsity Gridders Finish With A-5-l Record North Miami footballers opened their 1961 sea- son with a bitter revenge meeting with Edison. Falling beneath a Red Raider rampage, the Pio- neers sufered a 39-0 loss. Determined not to fall in such a way again, Coach Bogart's eleven pushed into an even more rugged game with Norlandis Vikings. A bad break on the conversion try hit the Pioneer gridders for a 7-6 defeat. Stunning the Cavaliers with a 0-0 shutout, North Miami threw her jinx and in their next game ar- razed Jacksonvilleis Ribault team in a 34-7 romp. Miami High was next on the agenda and the Pioneers fell before the national champs 27-0. Then came two wins in a row for the Bogart- men as they took Miami Military's Kaydets 44-0 and downed Miami Jackson I9-7. Next North Miamiis gridders took a short jaunt to Jacksonville and lost to Andrew Jackson in a chilling 33-7 game. Back home again, the Pioneers played losing host to Jacksonville Lee, as they dropped their ninth bout of the season I4-6. In the last game Hiaelah fell for the third straight time, I3-6, in a high spirited rival Homecoming game, leaving the Pioneers with a 4-5-I record. Senior players are: FIRST ROW: J. Muthart, K.
