Conquering all ob- stacles which have attempted to prolong immediate success, the unit has shown overwhelming joy to thousands of triumphant spectators. Entering their first season of varsitycompetition in the fall of 1953 with 60 inexperienced boys and insufficient equipment, the Pioneers through persistent determination were able to garner two decisive victories, thereby bringing added glory to the ever growing school. As they entered the 1954-55 season with a more experienced ball club, the future looked most auspicious. North Miami High. starting its second season of varsity competition. cazne within two minutes of performing the sea- son's first localfmajor upset, losing to powerful Miami Beach High. 6-0, on September 24. North Miami High dropped a 13-T decision to South Broward on Saturday, October 9. The 6-0 score jinxed North Miami High for the second time when the South Dade Rebels scoring just seconds before the end of the first half were able to hold the sluggish Pioneers scoreless for the remainder of the game. On October 15, the Pioneers suffered a 25-6 setback at the hands of powerful Miami Tech. Journeying to Key West, the North Miami High team was defeated 21-T. Led by the quarterbacking of 190-pound Vennie Pent and a rugged defensive line. the Pioneers won their first game of the year by defeating St. Theresais Musketeers 31-0 Halloween eve on the North Miami Youth Foundation gridiron. Traveling afar. the Pioneers were defeated 19-14 by Jacksonville Bolles in cold Jacksonville on November 5. On November 12 the North Miami High team, playing on their own gridiron. upset Pompano by a score of 26-0. In their last home game of the season the Pioneer squad defeated a highly-touted and heavily favored Curley team, 11-T. Although dropping the seasons final to West Palm Beach. 39-T. the North Miami High gridmen will hit the big time next year with Jackson High and Fort Lauderdale's Flying Lis certain opponents and Coral Gables another near-cer- taintv. 141
