Our version ol' tlte Little Red School House was a tiny white lrame structure at tlte northeast corner ot Fourth and Orange: a one-room bttilding with wooden benches where all tlte grades met together, and students were seated according to the classes they were in. 1, 'l'here was no high school departtnent. The North l.ittle Rock Public School System was known as Common School District tmmber Ili ol Little Rock. lts Board of liducation consisted ol three members: Dr. lidward Meek, .Iantes liblin, and 'll NY. Baldwin. ,X lew years later a two-story brick structure was built on tlte corner ol 'l'hird and Poplar: and North Little Rock was imotpotau-d :ts the eighth ward ol Little Rock. o llnt still then- nas only an elementary educatiott avail- .tble to North little Rock pupils, unless they crossed the tru-t lo attt-nd Littlc Rock's high school. Many pttblic- spirited nten ol North Little Rock, unedttcated nten desir- ing an education lor their children, had dreams of a high school lmilding where pupils could receive ntore than a seventh-grade edttcatiou. North Little Rock remained in a separate school district but was still in a cotnmon school district, and according to the statutes ol' .-Xrkansas, had no legal right to issue bonds to raise money lor such a building. Only cities or towns could have single school districts. 'l'lte crisis was resolved by organizing North Little Rock into a separate incorporated town: and through the untiring ellorts ol XV. tl. lfaucette and Nl. D. L. Cook, a charter was obtained lrom County -ludge Kavanaugh. 'l'he new totsn was very small, covering only six or eight blocks north nl' tlte limits ol' tlte eighth ward of Little Rock: but alter its organization was ellected, a single school district was formed incorporating the former district I6 and the new district. lt had six directors: XV. C. Faucette, M. D. L. Cook, A. S. Wilbanks, AI. Nl. Griffin, 6.2. li. Pierce, and ll. E. Keyes. llllll . . Plans were begttn lor tlte new high schooli bonds were issued, and sulliciettt money was raised. From C. li. Moore, .7- 9 ' I TH' ,- 4, 4, , .- , E 4 - the directors purchased Clendenin Hill at the corner ol' Thirteenth and Nlain, formerly the property ol' judge Clen- denin, as a site. Rottie Harding drew architectural plants which were accepted and W. O. Holtzman directed con- struction. So tlte dream wasrealized in the lornt ol a red brick three-story building with white stone trim, spacious play- grounds, and beautiful terraces. North Side High School saw many generations come and go - serving as an ele- mentary building alter its two larger successors were con- structed, until it was razed in 1949-50 to make rootn for the new Clendenin.
