The year has been full of scandals and controversies. Americans were forced to take an in-depth look into politics, religion, economics, and even personal values. Whether directly or indirectly, these current issues effect student life. During the summer months, students spend a lot of time nestled on the couch in front of the television. This summer, however, found most turning off the soaps in order to watch Iran-Contra Hearings of Capitol Hill. The star of televised committee hearing, Lt. Colonel Oliver North, was asked to explain his involvement in a controversial arms-for-hostages trade deal with Iran, commonly known as terrorist enemy of the US. North was not the only political official under fire, however, President Reagan seemed to suffer a convenient lapse of memory when questions of his prior knowledge of the arms trade agreement. Investigations by the House committee led to many resignations, consequently, causing Americans to question other policies of the Reagan administration. The election of '88 filled headlines of papers and magazines as candidates Vice-President George Bush, Robert Dole, Richard Gephart, Micheal Dukakis, Jesse Jackson, Pat Robinson, Paul Simon, and Gary Hart spent millions of dollars in campaign funds hoping to capture votes. Free political media coverage is a candidate's dream, unless, of course, it is negative, as in the case of Democratic candidate Gary Hart. The Miami Herald uncovered an affair between a very married Gary Hart and model starlet Getting Advice: Lt. Col. Oliver North gets advice from his attorney Brendan Sullivan while testifying on Capitol Hill. Presidential Candidate: Gary Hart withdrew from the race on May 8, only to re-enter in December. 28 - World Events Scandals Fill Donna Rice. His scandalous actions caused Hart to withdraw from the Presidential race in May, only to re-enter again in December. In October, focuses changed from politics to economics. The New York Stock Exchange had experienced record-setting highs during the previous months, but shocks were felt throughout the investment world as the Dow dropped a record 523 points on October 19. The bottom had dropped out, and economists began to prophesy about the Depression of 1990. While political and economic leaders prayed for answers, yet another scandal was uncovered in the religious community. Chairman of PTL fPraise the Lordl television network, Jim Bakker was removed from his job after it was discovered he had been paying Jessica Hawn to keep quiet about their brief affair. Other allegations concerning Bakker began to pour into the media world, in one of which it was discovered that Bakker and his wife Tammy Faye had been taking millions of dollars from the PTL network, which in turn forced them to auction their personal possessions, including an air-conditioned dog house, which sold for thousands of dollars, to repay their debt. America's attention was also focused on the homefront. When Sara Beth Whitehead, who had been contracted to serve as a surrogate mother, refused to give up the baby she had had to the couple who had originally paid Whitehead 310,000 to have their child. Various moral questions were raised as

Seniors Elect Each class has its own unique personality. The class of '88 was polled to find out members' favoritesg some of the answers were surprising, some not, but each is reflective of the senior class and their own unique preferences. Teenagers are often the target of ad campaigns for the latest fads, movies, songs, or clothes. A walk down the hall or a drive down Lamar Avenue will show just how up-to-date teens are. Some of last years' fashions have been pushed to the back of the closets, while still others remain in style. For instance, bows still remain the rage and are joined this year by sparkle of rhinestone barrettes. But those flowered jeans that Bush once bloomed everywhere are definitely out-of-season. No girls' wardrobe would be complete without the additions of a few new styles. Mini skirts that were a hit last year continue to get shorter with new ruffles and full skirts. Multiple T-shirt outfits are a necessity for any fashion conscious girl with a wide variety of styles to choose from. Accessories are constantly changing also. Scarfs are incorporated as belts and wraps to add to many outfits. High laced-up shoes in the fashion of hiking boots make the perfect completion to today's fashionable styles. x t .
