What being Homecoming Queen has meant to me: 1977 Home- coming Queen Teri Darnell addresses student body and exes during the Homecoming Assem- bly. Linda Short Crowned Homecoming Queen as Traditional Dance Turns Disco New traditions were started and some old ones were revived as the second month of football season rolled around. Powderpuff football hap- pened again after one year's absence as the Junior girls slipped by the Seniors, and Asa Chambless was crowned Powderpuff King. The older tradition of Homecoming began on the Thursday before the Friday Homecoming game when everyone managed to find some group to dec- orate for, or at least they appeared to be busy decorating. The day was ended with a mini-pep rally in front of the building and a snake dance around the school to the bonfire that night. Thanks to the Math Club, the traditional Homecoming bonfire, which was absent the year before, became a reality once again. A large enthusiastic crowd of exes attended the hour-long pep rally the next afternoon and saw the presentation of Homecoming Queen Nomi- nees Morita Twitty, Linda Short, and Kelly Moore and also heard the win- ners of the decorating contest: the band won first place with their huge treed tiger across the front of the building, and Latin Club won second with a Star Wars theme. Also presented at the pep rally was the new school flag, the Math Club service project, For the second year in a row, the overflow crowd saw the Panthers lose their Homecoming game to Commerce, this time, 17-14. The bright spot of the game was halftime as the NL band presented a unique show which suddenly found all members on the ground as a surprise ending and the crowning of Linda Short as 1978 Homecoming Queen. The night ended well, though, as the first disco Homecoming dance lightened spirits with a little something for everybody's taste. The dominating football game of the month, and the season, was not Homecoming, but NL's 54-7 whipping of Second ranked Mt. Vernon, ironically taking place just a week after the sickening Homecoming loss.
