CLUB CDU CTL 'ff' Because of the war efforts of the nation, the Girls' Club activities for the year were centered around Red Cross work and various drives sponsored by the school during the year. The Red Coss work consisted of filling Christmas stockings for the boys in the Naval Hospital, sending Christmas and Thanks- giving favors to the hospitals, and making covers for hot water bottles. First semester officers were as follows: Lila Jean Hamerslough, president, Darlene Jensen, vice president, Shirley Mayrand, secretary, Lois Anderson, treasurer, and Dacia Peters, editor. Smith Bun Nunn nf BUYS' CLUB CDU CIL aff' With the beginning of the new school year the Boys' Club met to elect officers for the year. Eino Niemi, a Senior, and active in club work, was elected president. Cal Burr, a Sophomore, was to hold the office of vice president, while Jim Winsborough and Bruce Guldjord, both Seniors, took offices as treasurer and secretary respectively. Wes Purdin ably held down the job of program chairman until mid-year when he graduated. Loyd Myrvang then took over. Emery Ringstad and Calvin Rice were Boys' Club representatives. Through the able leadership of these officers and the whole-hearted co- operation of the club the largest scrap drive in the county was held, Another project the club conducted was the collection and buying of Christ- mas gifts for the service men stationed at and confined to the Sand Point Dispensary. We received many letters of appreciation from the men saying we made the holiday seem much more like Christmas as most of them were unable to get home during that time and could not receive gifts from home for various reasons. The rest of the year was spent in school activities. All in all, we can be proud of our work this year. Mr. Sutphin was our advisor the first semester, but was relieved by Mr. New- berry the second semester. JF CCDMPASS STAFF 'te' Despite the fact that social activities have been few in number, the Compass Staff managed to meet the deadline every time. With mid-year graduation, the Compass Staff lost two of its outstanding members, Lila Jean Hamerslough, also editor of the paper during her Junior year, and Wesley Purdin, business manager. Under the supervision of Miss Larson, the members of the staff learned the fundamentals that go with publishing a paper, and found that it isn't as easy as it appears on the surface. First semester staff: Lila Jean l-lamerslough, editor, June Lehman, assistant editor, Wesley Purdin, busines manager, Cliff Dove, sports editor, Maxine Dedoyard, exchange editor, and Miss Larson, advisor. The second semester staff: lrene Pierce and Louise Peterson, editors, June Lehman, assistant editor, Bill Whitford, business manager, Cliff Dove, sports editor, Maxine Dedoyard, exchange editor, and Miss Larson, advisor. Reporters were Ethel Parcells, Lois Hill, Dean Negaard, Rosmay Klepper, Shirley McGinty, Dorothy Lundquist, Ruth l-lamalainen and Norman Vaa. lrrl Row: llurpvl Nl yrvuml. Kirin- R' html. Approximately one ton of rubber, three tons of paper, and four or five tons of iron were collected. In the early part of the school year, a Victory Bull was secured from the American Jersey Breeders Association, and Kenneth Rasumssen, president, brought it back from Olympia, to be kept in the south end of the county. Later, three Purebred Pigs were secured from Sears, Roebuck and Company. At the present time, Jim Forbes has one of the sows, and Bill Wheeler has a sow and a boar. Other activities carried out during the year were testing soil for the 'farmers in the north end of the county, and donating of money for drapes at the state convention in Pullman. The boys are having larger and better projects this year, due to a new system, which allows them extra points, giving them better grades and more credits. Because of transportation facilities, the usual judging contest could not be held, but a similar one is to be held at school by the members of the organ- ization. Officers for the year were: Kenneth Rasmussen, president, Bill Wheeler, vice president, Bill Bloom, secretary first semester, Carl Jensen, secretary second semester, Ernest Tuomi, treasurer, and Dick Weiss, reporter. The Pep Band plays an important part in school life, and is under the direc- tion of Loyd Myrvang. They made many public appearances during the basketball season. Among the members of the group are: Tommy Hammond, Mary Ellen Hindle, Ethelyn Johnson, Jim Soderberg, Calvin Rice, Lewis Larson, Ethel Parcells, Dick Harpel and Carl Jensen. The Purple Clef is the music department's social and service club. Mr. Newberry, the director, instead of having his group sing every day at class meetings, planned a course in music appreciation. During the first semester the Chorus met every day, but because of members graduating in mid-year and to make room for Victory Courses, it met only on alternate days the second half of the year. x. -.
