The Mason City Junior College also provides limited college education for selected talented high school students. To best meet the needs of this heterogeneous group, the Mason City Junior College sub- scribes to: I. GENERAL EDUCATION by presenting a balanced curriculum in the broad areas of the humanities, mathematics, social studies, and the natural and physical sciences. COLLEGE PARALLEL EDUCATION by duplicating or parelleling the programs of senior institutions, TECHNICAL EDUCATION by offering units of instruction, the content and extent of which are established by industry and the professions. 2. 3. 4. a. b. 5. a. b. I. Provide 2. Provide 3. Provide 4. Provide 5. Provide TERMINAL EDUCATION by providing a planned two-year program of courses for which an associate in arts degree is awarded, and . providing short-term sequences of courses for which certificates of completion are awarded. ADULT EDUCATION by establishing a non-college-credit program wherein a class will be organized when twelve or more people evidence interest in a specific course, and establishing night college-credit classes for working people who are unable to attend regular day school classes. MASON CITY JUNIOR COLLEGE STRIVES TO: counseling service to the individual student. courses and opportunities for those students who wish to develop specific skills. assistance to those students encountering difficulties in adjusting to college life. facilities for off-campus credit offered by other colleges and universities in the state. facilities and means of completion of high school requirements for students, who have not completed high school. 6. Provide a well-rounded program of cultural, competitive, civic and social activities for its stu- dents and the community as a whole. I. MASON CITY JUNIOR COLLEGE BELIEVES THAT: As a part of the public school system, it is privileged to: a. draw upon the special testing and guidance service of the system. b. use the elementary classrooms of the system as laboratories for teacher education. c. utilize the special vocational and technical libraries found in the school system. 2. The community should become, as far as possible, a laboratory for practical instruction, and that people and resources of the community should be used in the educational program. As a result of following this philosophy, the college hopes to make possible for each student an increase in the common knowledge, skills and attitudes which he needs to be effective as a person, a member of a family, a worker, and a citizen. 4 Gaining in Skill, Knowledge and Attitudes 4 e proudly dedicate. . . French Class Instructor, Madame Hedgecock. Senora ' We, the annual staff, proudly dedicate our 1963 edition to Mrs. Pauline Hedgecock. We hope this dedication can express in part the appreciation and thanks of the entire student body. Aftectionately known to students as Madame or Sef1ora her exuber- ant personality extends deep into student lite. As advisor of Honor Society, her interest in each student becomes most apparent. Her sincere concern in and out of classes is gratifying and inspiring. Teaching Spanish and French, Mrs. Hedgecock has an untiring volume of experiences and tales to personalize her classes. Also acting as counselor for MCJC foreign students, she devotes a great deal of her time and energy to our success. Eight years have endeared Mrs. I-ledgecock to both faculty and unnum- bered students. Again we extend our extreme gratitude. 7 gacuffy ang Gfwmirzisfrafiozz DEAN CLIFFORD H. Circle K is a college service club associated with the Kiwanis International. The two most important objectives of the or- ganization are: the development of International Brother- hood and the creation of a desire in young men for service to the community when they assume their roles in that com- munity. Awareness of this concept is developed in permitting young men to give of their time in active campus service and beautification. Numerous activities both social and ser- vice in nature were planned and activated by the i963 Circle K group. Earl Hall at the International Relations Club meeting 129 The two o'clock loungers. xi. 7 Darlene Wade is secretary to Dean Beem and Mr. Hoffman, and her duties include taking care of the schedule cards, perm- anent records, the files on the teacher placement bureau, veterans' papers and secretarial work. We wish to thank Darlene for the kindness and patience she has extended to us throughout the year. Donna Roberts, new to the secre- tarial staff this year, has duties which range from requisitioning yearly supplies for the office and faculty to answering telephone and student questions. We wish to welcome Donna to MCJC and thank her for her patience and help to the student body. .-Q Mrs, Youngerman is the secretary to the MCJC Adult Education Depart- ment. Her duties consist of aiding Mr. Eddings in maintaining an effi- cient program. Mrs. Youngerman plays an important part an the office team, and we wish to thank her for her service. 130 i l l l Mrs. Alsbury is secretary to the Com- munication Skills Department. This job includes checking innumerable tests,sub- stituting for absent faculty members and administering and correcting qualifying themes. She also aids Mrs. Romig by correcting world literature papers. Her duties, however, do not end there. She might be found administering make-up tests for any department, or helping stu- dents with that rough part in themes and write-ups. Mrs. Alsbury is indeed an indispensable person to faculty and student body alike. We wish to extend our extreme gratitude for her many ser- vices. Pictured right are Mrs. l-l. Dolter, Barbara Tyler, Mrs. E. Thorpe and Dorothy Fagerle, who run the J.C. snack bar. The snack bar has been open since November of l956, un- der the supervision of Mrs. Dolter, For the warm food, the nickel cup of coffee to keep ,us running, and the cheerful smiles, we wish to thank these ladies. Norm Stilwell and Maurice Miller are the unsung heroes of MCJC. While keeping our college clean is their official duty, keeping the students happy also keeps them pretty busy. Norm is often found helping out on annual staff, or with confused student prob- lems anywhere in the buliding. Maury's 7:l5 arrival and lighting of the building is the number one indication that another day at MCJC is well under way.
