Niysuk BUARIJ Ol lClJl'C-X'l'lON Vive, the students of North lluntingdon lligh School, wish to express our sincere gratitude lor the splendid education which our Board provides for us. ilihe memhers, though lwusy and prominent men, devote their valuable time to organizing and con- ducting the affairs of our school. 'lihe responsihilities imposed on this hody of men have heen many and varied. from providing teachers for our classrooms to supplying hleachers for our loot- hall lield. ln spite of many handicaps, the lioard has conscien- tiously tried to maintain the highest standards of administration. 'liheir plans are not only for the present hut lor the future when North Huntingdon will take its rightful place as one of the out- standing high schools of the state. SCHOOL SICCRNIUXRY lfvery ofhce has its secretary and we are proud ol' ours. Nlrs. Dorothy Naser. Although she came as a stranger this year, our secretary very' capably handled all her administrative duties. livery student problem was important enough to warrant her leaving her typewriter to offer assistance. She interpreted sched- ules for the freshmen, she managed the funds ol' the various :activities . . . she even tracked down lost articles for lorgetliul students. Xvith such thoughts in mind. ue can easily say that Mrs. Naser is truly an elhcient addition to our high school. lfwi RACKLIQY .... The trip to Tirusville was a surprise and, though quite a long, hard bus trip, was enjoyed hy all who made it. A new school Hag bearing the initials, N. H. T. was used in all the games. The band showed great improvement this year. In volume, it surpassed many of the larger bands around. The group, how- ever, was very much limited because of an insufficient number of uniforms and instruments. Both of these items have been scarce for several years because of wartime restriction, but, when they appear on the market at reasonable prices, the school hoard is planning to supply the group's needs. The student manager, Tom Carroll, was selected for a first trumpet position in the All-County Band. A program by this organization was given in the South Greensburg junior High School auditorium in the fall. A small news pamphlet, The Bandstern was published at intervals for the members, information and enjoyment. The annual banquet was held at the Village Inn where awards were made to all members who had earned the necessary points. During the year, the director, Mr. Wilbur Scott, organized beginning students in the township grade schools. Anyone who was able to secure an instrument was given free instruction. Stu- dents who play instruments or who have the desire to do so are always welcome in the band. Rehearsals were conducted two periods a week. For the Christmas assembly, the choir presented a cantata entitled The Carols of Christmas. At the evening performance, parents and friends of the members were guests. During an in- terlude, vocal solos were sung by Barbara Ann Taylor, Gerald Gross, and Leona Good. The choir, consisting of thirty-six stu- dents, is to be commended for this fine music program. Another very fine performance of the choir was at the community Easter Sunrise service. The Clef Club has for its members students who are inter- ested in furthering the art of music in school and community. Required qualilications for membership are that the student be interested in music, but need not be a soloist either in voice or on an instrument. Nlembers furnished programs for school assem- blies and local entertainment. VVeekly meetings were conducted in the music room. Fields of speech in which the contestants may compete are: humorous and dramatic readings, extemporaneous speaking, ora- torical declamation, and original oration. Twenty Forensic points are required to enable a student to enter the National Forensic League. A small badge is then obtainable to prove that the con- tended is a full-fledged Forensic member. Although only a small number of students entered contests early in the year, the number gradually increased to include quite a few more. lfspecially active toward the end of the year were the freshman and sophomore members. Some of the more important speech tournaments entered by North Huntingdon students were: West View, St. Vincent Prep, St. Xavier, Hurst, Greensburg and hlonessen. Ar Monessen, where contestants were gathered from all over Vllestern Penn- sylvania, Nick Fecko won second place in Humorous Readings and Isabel Grimes won third place in Oratorical Declamations. ,-Xt Vkest View Albert Shifller won four first places, the only con- testant to do so. To end this Forensic season Miss Lorraine Peters, advisor, sent the three highest scorers to the Finals at Duquesne Univer- sity. 'lihere representatives from all the state of Pennsylvania competed to discover the best person in each held. North Hunt- ingdon's contestants were: Cecilia Kopaczewski, lsabel Grimes, and Nick Fecko. Albert Shirlille led the N. Along the photography line, the members were taught the fundamentals of developing pictures themselves. They also learned how to operate various types of cameras and how to take certain kinds of shots. It was difiicult to operate properly the functions of the Camera Club, as facitities such as dark room to develope the pictures, enlargers, projectors, and many other items could not be obtained. In spite of all these handicaps, the members acquired many interesting and helpful ideas as to the operations and functions of the camera. The Camera Club sponsored a very successful dance and also a roller skating party at Del Vittos in Jeannette. With the money obtained from these two parties equipment was bought to aid the junior photographers in taking and developing pictures. Much credit is due Stanley Baston who made a great success of the club. He and Gerald Gross snapped many excellent pictures for the Huntingdon Hi-Lites and some for the yearbook. The club was led throughout the year by Stanley Batson, presidentg Louis Lafifoon, vice-presldentg and Shirley Brocker, secretary-treasurer. The 1947 Camera Club members have laid a line foundation for the club in the years to come. We are sure that the future members will have much success and have many happy memories on which to look back. FIRST Row: lf. Caldwell, Hunt F. Kunkle, Bastian, Pfau, D Caldwell, Gross. The objective of this organization was to encourage marksmanship and sportsman- ship. There were several competitive meets throughout the year, but the equipment did not arrive in time to enter the VVPIAL. Nomenclature, assembly, disassembly, care and cleaning, posi- tions, markmenship and range procedures were all taught military- fashion. Also highly stressed were the Ten Commandments of Safety . Equipment used by the club members included rifles, sights, ammunition, accessories and targets. The rifles and ammunition were of Army surplus. This co-recreational course had a membership of approxi- mately l3U members. All rifle competitions and record shootings held by the club were governed by the rules and regulations as laid down by the National Rifle Association of America. Some of the advantages offered by the N.R.A. are: membership in the greatest Shooters' Club in the world, unbiased technical infor- mation, opportunity to compete in ofhcial shooting meets, and protection from anti-gun laws. The officers elected for the year were, president, Rowland Kornrumphg vice-president, Edward Watson: secretary, Corrine Barrett, treasurer, jackie Rice, with Mr. George Michaels, as adviser. ff , . 5 E A . , f 1 '. 1' 1 EV ATHLETICS fbi? With A Twist Ot The Wrist A new athletic program was initiated at North Huntingdon by Miss Olga Cawley in her first year at our school. To help in carrying out the athletic program, the Girls' Leaders Club was again established. Its members were chosen because of outstand- ing sportsmanship and leadership ability. To include members of all classes, ten seniors, five juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman were selected. The leaders othciated at intramural games-keeping time, scoring, and umpiring. Keeping the show- er room neat, taking charge of health books, and planning intra- mural activities were also routine chores for the club. The mem- bers of this year's club chose Gloria Chadima as president, Shir- ley lirocker as vice-president, Pat Hockensmith as secretary, and Dolores Soukup as treasurer. As part of its social activities, the group held private dances, attended a hockey game, and held private parties. A new type of activity was introduced into the girls' gym classes. The fund- amentals of modern dance, ballroom, ballet, and soft shoe were taught, as well as folk dancing. Acrobatics and reducing exer- cises also played an important part in the gym program. Basketball, hockey, and volley lull were played in gym classes and in intramural games. ln the hard-fought intramural volley ball contest, the O. H'ers of S-l won the championship. After a well-played hockey tournament, senior home room 35, The Swift Devils, proved to have the winning team.
