I f this is true, and we believe it is, then the students of North have a great task before them. We live in an age in which the hopes and aspira- tions of all mankind are obscured by clouds of sus- picion, mistrust and fear. But we are full of the optimism of youth-optimism which points to a better world. We the students of 1950 have in our possession the greatest tools for world peace-knowledge, under- standing, and truth. As we stand at the half century mark, we are truly fortunate to have the opportunity to work, to play, to live in this great land, America. In no other place in the world today do the boys and girls enjoy freedom as we do. However it is not to the past to which we pledge ourselves, but rather to the future, the future we shall build. Our Annual depicts the American Way of LU'e-- a Way of Lie with which we have become familiar during our stay at North. We know of the Four Freedoms and the Declaration of Independence, and we have practiced it, in the classrooms, in the halls, at the dances, in the assemblies, on the athletic yield, in our organizations-through the companionship and brotherhood which we have known. With a firm belief in the American Way of Lq'e, and with optimism toward the future, we humbly dedicate the 1950 Viking to the youth who will shape a better tomorrow. Lort, principal of North Den- ver High School, is respected equally by the faculty and student body. A firm supporter of young people's democratic government, he represents our Viking Way of Life. Super- vising the school program and continually joining hands with the teachers and students, Mr. Lort is our mainstay at North. Our Dean of Girls, Miss Fern Dorothy Mitchell, is ever ready to guide and assist us in her sincere fashion. Willing to help both girls and boys alike, Miss Mitchell is a hard and able worker doing her share to maintain the standards of North. Marvin A. The Student Council plays an integral part in North's Administration. As the voice of the students at North, the Council is continually working and planning for a better school. During the past school year this representative group has considered and outlined many school improvements. Mr. Lort, together with the faculty, has helped the Council carry out its progranl. Next year, under a new Constitution, they hope to do even more. The Council is composed of the four All School oflicers, the four officers of each class, a representative of the North Star and the Viking Annual, and a faculty advisor. The Grade Councils, composed' of two representatives from each counseling room and the faculty class sponsor, introduce new ideas and helpful suggestions to the Student Council. During the years 1946- 1949 North has won the drill com- petition three times. Rifle matches are another part of the program with rifles and ammunition being furnished to the team members. Near the end of May an Annual Field Day is held at Lakeside Park with competitions, award of deco- rations and trophies, and a formal review. SWI I G For the first tixne in 25 years of swimming competition North's swimming team won the City championship. In a nip and tuck race with the perennial champs from East, Coach Harvey Riddle's tank men out fought their opponents to win. ln the Denver University Invita- tional Meet, generally regarded as the state championship, the Vik swimmers came in second beaten only by the phenomenal swimrning of Colorado Springs. With true Viking spirit however, they disregarded all the dopesters and went on to a suc- cessful season. Every opponent out-weighed North, up front in the all important line. The reserves were shallow and inex- perienced. These circumstances forced Coach Willet to develop that now rare item, a sixty minute team. Throughout the early stages of the season North was in the thick of the pennant fight. The keynote of the season was struck in the opening Manual game. Trailing by two touchdowns with less than a quarter to play, the Norsemen struck with lightning swiftness for 13 big points and the ball game. They won their second straight hairs raiser from favored West, 13-12. Amid the mud and rain North lost their first game of the campaign to the powerful East Angels, 12-0. North reached its highest point of the season in defeating South to the tune of 20-0. The victory assured North of its most successful homecoming in many a season. To open the second round North beat back a plucky Manual Thunderbolt squad, 12-6. An inspired West Cow- boy staged a second half comeback to defeat North, 20-14. The state championship bound Angels again pounded North, 20-0. A Heart breaking touchdown by South in the last minute of the season dropped North from the runnerup spot. The South Rebels won 7-0. Special mention should be accorded Coaches Myron Willet and Harvey Riddleg to Don Schisler, team captaing to Arnold Heller, All-City guardg and to Dave Krebs, the league's leading passer and punter. This year Mr. Moles retires as baseball coach. Coach Moles' stamp of greatness will never be forgotten here at North. No man in the Denver Prep League has ever left behind him such an envious record. In 16 years as baseball mentor, Coach Moles won 7 city champion- ships and tied for 2 additional ones. As wrestling coach he has produced 10 city and state titlists and tied for 1 more title. His record of 6 consecutive city and state wrestling championships will probably never be broken. During his stay at North Mr. Moles has not only become head of North's Athletic Department, but he has also earned the title of Dean of Denver's Coaches. GYMNASTICS Gymnastics, North's newest Varsity sport, is gaining ever increasing popu- larity on North's Athletic scene. In their first year in statewide competition, Coach 0'Hanlon's team ranked high with 5 boys taking All-State honors. Besides their athletic ability the team is popular with the student body for their entertaining cxhibitions. STRETCH HAP, STRETCH The 1950 Viking basketball tcam's play ranged from inspired to mediocre, from a win over the loop champions to a com- plete rout by the Wlest Cowboys. Spurts of great play were followed all too fre- quently by let-downs. Lack of reserves placed a great hindrance on Coach O'Hanlon as the team faded in the fourth quarter. ln the second Manual game North finally reached their full potential in snapping the two-time defending state champi0n's win - string at 17 straight league wins. An iron man team of Arn Heller, Don Cohen, Gerald Rutt, Hap Hazzard, and Dave Krebs swamped the Thunderbolts, 40 to 26. Unable to keep up with the tremendous state-wide improvement in wrestling, the grunt and groan artists dropped to third place in the city and state. After opening the season with victories over South and Manual, the team was hampered by injuries. Tony Pisciotta, North's workhorse pitcher, contracted a sore arm mid-way through the season and with him went North's hopes for top position. The team featured the keystone combination of Tolve to Corbetta to Ryan and the heavy hitting of Seymore Rubenstein. As we go to press the 1950 Vik squad has just begun to assemble. The return of the entire 1949 pitching stalf, several letterlnen, and the addition of last year's championship Sophomore squad should make Coach Willet's first year as Varsity coach a successful one. The program, under the direction of Coach Moles and O'Hanlon, receives little publicity, but more boys participate in it than in any other sport. The Intramural program has a two-fold purpose: first to develop boys for participa- tion in Varsity Athletics, and second, to allow those boys that do not play on Varsity Squads the chance to play and to receive the benefits of athletics. The highlight of the week was an assembly program in which Rabbi Manuel Laderman spoke. Rabbi Laderman, who had just re- turned from a ten month stay among the Displaced Persons camps in Europe, told us of the work of the U. N. and what the U. N. means to the people of the world. The speech brought home to us here at North the reasons why international co-operation is so important. Throughout the week North played host to men from every walk of life and from the many nations of the world. Every day during the week at least two speakers came to North. They imparted to us some of the culture and customs of their homelands. Iran, India, Argentina, and a great many other countries were well represented. The speakers left us with a feeling of being a little closer to the people of the world and that the naions of the world must find a way to live to- gether. 160 75a Wmabw gag BL ACK PRESENTATION 1L1W'f'1fi-'f .J Aff ii hQ55 3.2125-9? f, f A 4-jf. :M -fm, ,if -115,4 M wfbq all I - ,--kf g-f,k,7i,S5gg,,g ,fkk,, V Vkrk k,gg,7l,,,EiQ .i 1, .,y-33,1 V V f ,-., 1, K .,,.. .ww .A ,iiff-,Wf-,A f ..
