OUR PRINCIPAL TWELVE When in the iuture we look back over our years at North. one of our dearest thoughts will be of our principal, Mr. Ioseph Lort. He arrived at North the same year we did, and from the beginning he acted not only as a leader but also as a friend of the student body. He has watched us outgrow our uncer- tainty and develop a new confidence which only fellowship can advance. Through his eiiorts our years at North have been the best of our lives.

ook applauds... The life of Miss Fern Dorothy Mitchell, Dean of Girls, seems to have been inspired by the name of her birthplace, Friend, Nebraska, for she has indeed been a friend to all Vik- ings. Miss Mitchell grew up in Colorado and was a student in Colorado schools. She attended Cutler Academy at Colorado College and was graduated from Denver University. Before becoming Dean of Girls, Miss Mitchell taught English at North and was sponsor of 'AThe North Star for many years. As a parting message to the class of 1949, she says: Your page of high school life is finished. A page full of events most worth- while: high scholastic standingpservice to the school through athletics: offices: committees: social affairs: participation in plays and programs. You have received much from North and given much to it. May the new page of your life be a continued record of achievement and growth made possible by your experiences at North High School. Me, Powell is a Missourian through and through. Born in that state which is now famous for turning out successful men, our Assistant Principal obtained part of his education in small country schools. After being a football, basketball, and track star in high school, Mr. Powell attended Missouri State Teachers' College, and graduated from there in three years. He taught Industrial Arts in Missouri schools and at Smiley Iunior High School in Denver, and managed to find time to receive his Master's degree from Colorado State College of Education. When he first came to North, he was a teacher of Mechanical Drawing, but he moved up to the position of Assistant Principal just as the sophomore class of 1949 was entering North. Now as the class of 1949 leaves North, we know that we shall long remember Marvin A. Powell as an ex- cellent administrator, , and good friend. lla iiiti MMCEP A native Denverite, Miss Olga Nelson has spent most of her-life in Colorado. After attending schools in Hotchkiss, she went to Colorado A. 63 M. and graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science and a Master's degree in psychology. Along with her studies in science, she spent much of her time in de- bating and speech contests. She began her teaching career in the town of Kersey, which she calls a wide place in the road, and in Loveland High School. Coming to North, Miss Nelson taught chemistry until recently, when she became Coordinator. Describing her position, Miss Nelson says, l'm in charge of the instructional program here at school and I'm more or less a go between for the Administration building and North. What- ever her position, Miss Olga Nelson will be one of our most pleasant memories of North High School. THIRTEEN
