The football royalty reigned over the Student Each year near the close of the football season the student body elects a boy from the varsity football squad and a girl from the student body to reign as Pigskin Pete and Varsity Sue. This year Lonnie James and Elaine Woodman were crowned in the North-Hutchinson pep as- sembly and reigned over the Stu- dent Legislature dance. Attending the royal couple were Sharon Waterson, Kay Stinebaugh, Phil Huntsinger and Garry Wade. Page Two . . . Paqaltg Page Three ter, Ph11 Huntslnger and Don Meadows. E i Other candidates were Sue Barrett, Pat Cobb, Lizzie Dawson, Gregory Gray, Richard Hauser, and Ronnie Stephens. TOWER KING, Milton Willis, and TOWER QUEEN Floy Raye Mayer, were chosen for their service to the school, good character, leader- ship and scholarship. Each homeroom nominated one boy and one girl whose grades were then checked in the office. Those who had a B average for the entire high school career were placed on the elimination ballot. The six highest couples were placed on the final ballot. Page Four ?aculz'q . . C. E. STRANGE , GLEN K. HAMILTON The ringmaster under the big top is C. E. Strange. Since 1945, Mr. Strange has done an efficient and credit- able job as principal of North High. He is responsible for the organization and management of the school pro- gram and has general oversight of all the various activities of the faculty and the student body. Public relations come first with him, and he takes great personal interest in helping solve the problems of pupils, teachers, and parents. This job has never been an easy one, yet, Mr. Strange has always found time for participation in all school and extra-curricular activities. His genuine friendliness has won him the respect and admiration of the faculty and student body. Glen K. Hamilton might be referred to as the official trainer of the troupe at North. This ranking is due to his responsibilities as vice principal which include supervising activities, schedule making, and enrollment. Besides these tasks, he keeps the clowns and actors under the big top in line. Only a person of tact and fortitude could hope to handle this job wisely and well, and Mr. Hamilton capably fits this description. In addition to these attributes, he also possesses a fine sense of humor. Wesley Lauterbach is the assistant to Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Strange. He may rightly be called a Jack of All Trades, and a very capable one at that. He supervises the clubs and handles boys' check-outs and pass cards. He aids in the enforcement of detention, helps with supervision in halls and at school activities, and is in charge of school elections. His personality and pleasant disposition are admired by all who know him. WESLEY LAUTERBACH North High School offers its students a wide variety of subjects ranging from art to drivers education. When a person graduates, if he has taken advantage of the courses offered, he is ready to begin either his college education or making a living for himself. At the present time approximately one hundred subjects are offered. If a person averaged four solids and physical education during a three year period, it would take twenty-five years for him to complete all the courses without repeating any one of them. This system presents both variety and opportunity. Only four and one half subjects are required out of fifteen units in senior high school. This means that the student has many electives. The student must choose one subject out of every fourteen subjects offered. To achieve the full benefits of this variety, a person must know to some extent where he is headed in the future. Even if the student has only vague ideas about his future, not much is lost. Because there is correla- tion among all the subjects, some-thing learned in one course may be applied to another. Down through the years, schools find it easy to insert subjects- for as the times change curriculums must keep up with the period. How- ever, it is hard to drop any previously offered material. Although new trends in education must be followed, some of the old ones must be retained. Page Six Dean Stucky is senior counselor. Among his many duties are guidance center planning, which includes. a testing program, social function ar- rangements, senior testing, scholarships, college contacts, vocational guidance clinic, and keeping information on jobs for boys. Miss Anne Andrews, junior counselor, is in charge of assembly programs, the school calendar, information on jobs for girls, social function ap- plications, and the selection of ushers for com- mencement. Miss Anita Mae Wheeler, sophomore counselor, is in charge of student aid such als book rentals, girls' check-outs, and girls' pass cards. She also handles Red Cross, Community Chest, and March of Dimes drives and the servicemen mailing list. Mrs. Leone Lawrence is attendance secretary. Her main responsibility is keeping daily attend- ance records. These are permanent records of the students' three years in high school. When trouble arises about a student's attendance, the secretary has an interview with his parents. Also included in her duties is helping with the special excuses. Counselors handle any service relating to ad- justment of the student to school life. They hold conferences with parents and teachers regarding any phase of a student's program. Counseling is important in planning the stu- dent's course of study, and in checking into the failures each six weeks in order to work out an adjustment which will be beneficial to the student. Counselors keep accumulated record folders and use all other resources to interpret to the faculty, home, and student the necessary information to guide the student toward his fullest development and achievement. As the election draws near, campaigning begins. Each candidate has a campaign manager who arranges for booster buttons and posters which appear in the halls. Among the hundreds of posters were these two which represented Jack Hiebert and Dora Drowatzky. One of the highlights of the campaign week is the parade, where the band plays and all candidates walk through the halls throwing candy and gum in an effort to get more votes. Candidates for class office must carry at least a C average for the last semester's grades. After a week of campaigning the student body votes. The results of the election are published in the NORTH STAR. Page Thirty-Five uzdaalaaamen . , . These sophomore girls, in keeping with the age old tradition of the North High Redskins, perform a dance to Poca'hantas, which relayed the story of her life. These Indian maidens were led by Tina Merrell as Captain John Smith and Kay Johnson as Pocahan- las. Students have many opportunities to participate in a variety of extra curricular activities, Among these are the sophomore assembly where as pictured here, Pat Turner did a pantomine to Sailor Boys, They Talk to Me in English. Unsuspectedly caught in one of her cre'1 tive moods is Jackie Sue Fitzwater seen here decorating for the Y-Teen dance. Another action shot of the sophomore assembly shows a group of promising musicians In tune with the current rage of rock and roll are Barbara Kerr and Clarence Johnson doing a bop ar- rangement to Honky Tonk Part Il. North High is proud of its fine choir. Besides par- ticipating in the spring and fall concerts, the vocalists present programs for church groups and the interme- diate schools. The group sang at the state principals convention, and for the Christmas assembly. Their music added inspiration at the naturalization ceremony held in North's auditorium. This is the largest singing group in the vocal de- partment. From tryouts for Choir, Miss Christa Fisher and Neil Dearinger select the more talented. Glittering spider webs decorated the backdrop and ornamented masks were given as souvenirs. North is fortunate to be the only known school having a river adjacent to its campus. Every year, weather per- mitting, a water festival is presented. This float depicts the story of The Three Little Pigs following the theme Fairy Tales. Five boys and five girls of those ten are later chosen by the student body to lead North's cheers at the football and basketball games. The cheerleaders must meet a grade requirement of no D's or F's. Their pep and enthusiasm help to keep North's spirit one of the best in the Ark Valley. Tryouts are held each year to choose members of pep band. This is a colorful group when decked out in red and white uniforms, which the members purchase. Helping to make the pep assemblies even more exciting is NOFtll'S pep band, which also plays at all of the home games. When invited, the group travels to out-of-town games.
