C sit L a (Jle a French phrase equivalent to ' This Is the Life ' when stated with a positive connotation in English. Why a French theme? The state of Iowa has many ties with France. Iowa was included in the Louisiana Purchase sold to the United States by France in 1803 while Thomas Jefferson was President. The city of Dubuque, Iowa was named after a French missionary, Julian Dubu- que, who was the first Caucasian settler in Iowa. The words ' Des Moines ' are French. Moine means ' monk ' when translated. Where Merle Hay Mall now stands was once a monestary. Speculation is that this was the origin of our city ' s name. This year will be only one blink in our long lifetime. In some ways it is the best of times and in other ways it is the worst of times. Most importantly though, this is our time. This is our chance to grow and mature into responsible and produc- tive members of society. It is also a time to enjoy and remember. A time when we may encounter everything from the anxiety of growing up to a first love to the joy of graduation. As young adults, we always hear that these are the best years of our life.
