Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1988 volume:

C sit L a (Jle a French phrase equivalent to ' This Is the Life ' when stated with a positive connotation in English. Why a French theme? The state of Iowa has many ties with France. Iowa was included in the Louisiana Purchase sold to the United States by France in 1803 while Thomas Jefferson was President. The city of Dubuque, Iowa was named after a French missionary, Julian Dubu- que, who was the first Caucasian settler in Iowa. The words ' Des Moines ' are French. Moine means ' monk ' when translated. Where Merle Hay Mall now stands was once a monestary. Speculation is that this was the origin of our city ' s name. This year will be only one blink in our long lifetime. In some ways it is the best of times and in other ways it is the worst of times. Most importantly though, this is our time. This is our chance to grow and mature into responsible and produc- tive members of society. It is also a time to enjoy and remember. A time when we may encounter everything from the anxiety of growing up to a first love to the joy of graduation. As young adults, we always hear that these are the best years of our life. To the 525 people that attened the 1987 North High Homecoming Dance October 10, the dream became a reality. ' It was one of the best dances ever Dr. Joan Roberts commented. Out of the several different groups that were there, everyone got along and had a great time together. The theme ' Mythical Dreams ' was based on ancient Greece. This years homecom- ing committee wanted an idea for a theme instead of a theme song. The decorations also helped create the illusion of an ancient time period, with the big white pillars, the laural wreaths and the scenic back drops of Mount Olympus. The colors were soft and romantic with a touch of gold and silver to add some excitement. nds fry to ' boogie. Spirit Week involved geeks, togas and ' Mythical Dreams 7 It seemed like this year the student body was more excited for homecoming than any other homecoming before. It was as if the students had a feeling that the football team ' s long losing streak would end this season. The spirited week included ' geek day. ' Rose Barcellano was awarded the ' honor ' of most authentic looking geek. Toga Tuesday was another day in which dozens of students became involved with homecoming spirit by coming to class and showing off their best bed sheets, letting North High know that ancient Greece still lived. The best looking toga award was giv- en to Chanh Lovan. Friday ' s finale included an assembly that featured a play written by Eric Axness and Shannon Laidley and the characters in- volved were He-Man, Her-Man and Hero (Derrick Wyse, Kelly Burks, Mike Hen- richs) who played the ' Three Amigos. ' Cheering and having fun was all a part of the laughable skit. One of the best things about homecom- ing week was the homecoming dance. The dance was attended by 525 students who enjoyed the dance ' s theme of ' Mythical Dreams. ' Donna Ford strikes a pose for ' Real People. VALENTINE ' S DANCE On February 13, Cupid payed a visit to North High School. This year ' s Valentine ' s Dance, sponsered by KDWZ 93.3 FM and Pepsi Cola, successfully drew a crowd of over 200 students and their dates. All Proceeds were equally shared by the Journalism Department and the Senior Board who helped to organize the dance. Free Pepsi was provided and a raffle was drawn for a free prom dress and tux rental. Doug Spurling and Monica Dudley get caught in the act! North breaks 5 year losing streak with victory over Say del After 45 consecutive football losses North ended their season in a big way, defeated Saydel 20-6, Oct. 27 at Saydel. It was almost five years to the day when North won it ' s last football game against Valley high, who was rated 9th in the state at the time. North defeated Valley Tigers 15- 12, Oct. 22, 1982. Five years later the nations second longest losing string among active high school teams has been broken with the Saydel victory. Look! They all think they have the right answer ' We deserved to win this game, ' said North Coach Tom O ' Boyle. ' I ' m so happy for these kids, and glad they finaly get to celebrate. ' Charles Mims, a 175-pound junior, had a big hand in the outcome, rushing for 189 yards on 14 carries and scoring two touchdowns. His first came on an 11-yard run early in the second quarter after Saydel ' s deepest penetration of the first half. North opened the third quarter by driving from its own 42-yard line to Saydel ' s 29. From there, quarterback Kevin Wilson tossed a touchdown pass to Mims with just under 6 minutes left in the period. Chanh Lovan added his second extra point to boost the Polar Bears ' lead to 14- 0. Mims set up the final North tally 2 minutes later. After penalties sent the Polar Bears back to their own 9-yard line, Mims weaved 88 yards to the Saydel 3. Sophomore James Turner scored the game-clincher on the next play. Coaches O ' Boyle and Hutchinson show the students what they have. Soul Train 15 IT ' S A REVOLUTION. ' 7 Pep Club is an organization that should represent the Polar Bear Spirit of the entire student body. This however, was not the case for the 1987-88 school year. Despite membership drives and a skit pleaing to students during the Food Drive Assembly, Pep Club still remained at ten mem- bers. Ten strong members. Each accomplishment made was not done without much hard work and dedication. The year involved collecting empty pop cans weekly, making pos- ters for football games, locker posters for each player during basketball season, and most im- portantly, Courtwarming. Both groups are active in community service and have participated in : collecting can food goods around the holidays, buying toys for poor children at Christmas, collecting clothing for the Goodwill, mak- ing greeting cards for the elderly, visiting the elderly at rest homes, and helping other school organizations with various fundraisers and activities. The Bear Pause performs 30 minute shows for various places around the community, such as elementary schools, The Easter Seals Teleathon at Southridge Mall and the Convention Center. The shows consist of short scenes with titles like Balloon Madness, An- other Brat Rides The Bus, and Once Upon A Mime. The mimes do not speak so there is great emphasis on body movement and facial expressions in order to get an idea across to the audience. Their costumes are all black except for their shoes and gloves which are white. Green suspenders and a green bow tie are added to show school spirit. Over 500 people were frightened by the two shows in the North High Auditor- ium. ' Dracula ' was a medium-sized play, made up of 15 parts. However, Mrs. Vanderhoef said that five parts were added ' because so many people gave quality auditions that I wanted to give them parts. ' This production was an eye-popper with several special ef- fects. ' Dracula ' actually turned into a bat on stage, ' said Mrs. Vanderhoef excitedly. Along with these effects, there was actual fog rolling across the stage and Dracula had a stake driv- en through his heart.
