A Junior Tutor project where elementary students are helped with their reading at the Northside library, and the Student to Student project which involves Oak Park elementary and H.S. students who share his her leadership skills while helping the teacher. In this project the students hope to gain a big sister brother, tutor, and role model in one. The club has also participated in the Kiwanis pancake day at Vets, and of course it wouldn ' t be complete without their holiday messages. Key Club serves the community so that both sides benefit. The Mimes perform for both non-profit organizations and paid entertainment. 107 )j — A variety of talent displayed: — This year the North high school drama should be com- mended for organizing two one-act plays (the Sandbox and a Visitor from Forrest Hills) and a pantomime production. All three were very successful and each individual showed a variety of talent. The Sandbox, by Edward Albee, was an absurd comedy about how we treat our elders as if they were infants. A Visitor from Forrest Hills, by Neil Simon (taken from Plaza Suite) was a comedy about the fear of becoming like your parents and overcoming your problems by communi- cation. Sandbox: Mommy . . . They ' jazzed ' their way to the University of Northern Iowa, and finally to Hoover where they ended their musical season. Mr. Jim Davis was very pleased with the Jazz Band ' s performances. Orchestra Left to right: David Lee Tina Ashley Donna Ford Stacy Hamilton Kim Smith Christine Oden Wendy Branchcomb Debbie Ford Phyllis Breddin (director) 111 5 Is that really Cherry Coke, Wes? Drum Majorette Donna Anderson. Band Makes Good Showing This year the North High Band made a good showing at the marching competitions they attend- ed. The Band started the year with the McDonalds Festival of Bands, where they received third place and the All Star Drum Major Award. At State com- petition they earned a TWO rating. At Valleyfest the Band was first in their class, at the showdown they were seventh place. Drum Major Donna Anderson believes that you only get out of band what you put in it. With the Band ' s record this year, we know that every person gave to the success of the Marching Polar Bears. Midori Powers sings at the Senior Banquet. SENIOR BANQUET A Cut Above the Rest was the theme for the Senior Banquet held last spring at Elwell ' s in Ankeny. The Banquet Committee put on an enjoy- able evening for the Senior Class with good food and entertainment. A few of the seniors gave presentations on what members of the class did over the years and what was in store for them in the future. There was also a slide show of what some members of the class did over the past four years. Later in the evening Grammy Awards were giv- en out to seniors who were voted on for such things as best eyes, class clown, most likely to become a movie star, etc. David Lee and Mike Cretsinger sang Ebony and Ivory and Midori Powers sang That ' s What Friends are For and Memories . Each senior was given a program in the shape of a record which contained the menu, the events to take place, a place to write in the names of the award winners, and memories of each senior. They were also given a key chain which was a replica of the banquet ticket. Traci Biddle, Leslie Preminger and Rhonda King having a good time with the senior class. Sharon Choi and her date Tracey Warren and Ted Smith The Best Prom 1986 . . . The last dance. For seniors this past year has been a rush of preparations for the future and a time to remember the past. Some of us have been together since grade school, others have become friends only recently, but the feeling of love and friendship is among all. That ' s not to say that there haven ' t been differences and disagreements — there have, but through it all these past twelve years have triumphed as The best of times . Joel Johannsen and Dawn Hicks Ginger Charlson and Paul Cross Of Times Prom was held on May 3 at the Top of the Tower in the Park Inn. Elegance was in the air as men in tuxedos escorted la- dies in silk and satin gowns to the dance floor. The din- ing area rotated slowly under silvery stars and soft candelight while music was played by Lee Githens and Andy Summers of K.I.O.A. As the end drew near friends rushed to take final pic- tures and discuss plans for after prom. This night will long be remembered in the hearts of seniors as one of the best of times. The Commencement Ceremony began with the traditional processional of the graduates while the band played Pomp and Circumstances. The MCJROTC Color Guard led the gradu- ates and their guests in the Pledge of Allegiance which was followed by a short welcome from class president, Paul Wiedemeier. Also involved in the ceremony were Principal — Dr. Paul Devin, Class Valedictorian — Diane VanderLinden, Salutatorian— Marion Gaughan, Executive Di- rector of Educational Services — Dr. Keith Hyde, School Board Member — George Wilson, Vice Principals— Dr. Joan Roberts and Ken Frey. Musical selections during the ceremony in- cluded That ' s What Friends Are For and Battle Hymn of the Republic under the di- rection of David Chamberlin. The ceremony ended with the recessional Festa! under the direction of James Davis. 5 Faculty vs Seniors Proves Lots of Fun The annual Senior-faculty games were held this year and, like always, the faculty tried to show up the seniors. They failed, of course. The first event was a relay contest in which students and faculty members had to put several articles of clothes on and then race to shoot a free-throw. The faculty came out on top in this event. Next came the scooter race. The older teachers were no match for the younger stu- dents. The teachers won the hula-hoop contest. Mrs. Bassetts ' hips were unbeatable. The pie-eating contest was declared illegal and the teachers were disqualified (they cheated). Paul Wiedemeier and Shelly Smith flew by Fitz and Davis to win the three-legged race. The sixth and final event was the basket- ball game. With Kevin Turner on the stu- dents side they had nothing to fear. After the slam dunks by Kevin there was no looking back for the students. It was a great da y for the seniors. Not only did they win but they also raised about $500 for the senior class. The money went towards banquet and prom expenses. Faculty and seniors struggle or the ball. Second were the freshmen ($920), third the juniors ($697.50) and last the seniors ($687.50). The entire school was divided into two groups— ' George ' s Gang ' , and ' Fitz ' s Family ' , who battled it out until the end, with Fitz ' s Family being victorious, with $1840 in sales and George ' s Gang raising $1522.50. The schools overall grand total was $3362.50. The conditions of the competition was that the loser would be body painted in front of the student body and faculty by a small select group of students. The icing on the cake was when George ' s son, Toby, threw a pie in his fathers face. Also during the assembly a drawing was held in which Rick Flaherty and David Tullis each won $50. The top 5 homerooms in the Pancake ticket race were: First place — McCarthy Sharrett, $287.50; Second— Lazear, $242.50; Third- George Davis, $227.50; Fourth — Whitney, $205.50; Fifth— Zike, $152.50. Steve Swift (46) and Scott Pepper (42) sold the most tickets of the student body, repre- senting the senior class. Other leaders includ- ed: John Firestine (16) 11th grade, Steve Heatherington (33)— 10th grade and Kathy Rice (30) and Scott Rhoades (30) were tied for first in the freshmen class. Winning homerooms, and runner up home- rooms were eligible to attend a pizza party at North on April 9 in appreciation of their efforts. Gloria, how many pieces of pizza have you had?
