[ ft SCANDAL Carol, Sandy, and Donna protest. Proud students sing school song. On January 11, 1985, concerned North High stu- dents staged a protest regarding the transfer of foreign exchange student, Christian Horn, from North to Roo- sevelt. The main concern of the students evolved around comments made by school board member, Jonathon Wilson, who favored the transfer against district regu- lations. He implied in an interview with the Des Moines Register that North was socially uncomparable to Roosevelt. He also stated that a short term international guest should not be held hostage by lo- cal issues which have plagued our district for several years. Horn commented that he chose to transfer to Roose- velt because, it offers more of an academic challenge, I think, than at North. This spirited student protest proved to all concerned that North High is more than just a school. It is a place to learn, to achieve, and above all to grow as an individual. We, the classes of 1985,86,87, and 88 have pride and faith in the academic and social quality of North High. The Sophomore football team had a good season in the eyes of the Coaches. The Team had a 1-6 record, but the one victory over Lincoln was very satisfying. The team had 17 players and defeated 50 Lincoln players 13-8. There were strong personal performances from Scott Marnin, Kendall Godwin, Cory Floyd, Toussaint Cheatom, Monty Rundle and Larry Fernandez. But the team contributed at all times, either in practice or in a game. Coach Minnick felt the team did well even though the odds were against them. They never gave up, and the 110 percent dedication paid off with the victory. 31 32 FRESHMEN GAIN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE Front Row: Mike Brown, Mike Mason, Kelly Burks, David Tullis, Tony Williams, Second Row: Jose Muniz, Steve Christiansen, Cecil Nichols, Jim Frost, Richard Sopher, Eric Way. The team lost a defensive bat- tle to Roosevelt 6-0, and scored 20 points in the second half, but lost to East 34-20. Coaches Leonard and Riccio said that the team had the talent and potential to win, but they were disappointed that the team didn ' t do better. Both coaches hope all of this years players will continue football next year. 34 MESSERLY TO STATE MEET Row one: Pam Cope, Lisa Tavarez, Melissa Gaudineer, Sandy Adams, Brenda Essex, Margaret De Brown. Row Two: Margarite De Brown, Julie Chapman, Nikki Thomas, Liz Messerly, Don- na Chapman, Lisa Simpson. The Girls Cross Country Team had a very good season this year. Though the size of the team rose and fell through the season, Coach Davis was proud of the girls he had. Highlights of the season came towards the end with the Bears defeating 9 Urbandale in dis- tricts, and placing Liz Messerly 8th in the State. Through dis- qualifications, Liz was finally placed 6th. Liz ' s finish was the highest in North ' s history. Coach Davis felt very good about the team he had and he feels that North is now recognized by other schools as a good team. Row Two: Mike Collins, Mike Donahue, Mark Hampe, David Nash, Tony Freeman, Not Pictured: Mike Ford, Chris- tian Horn. The Boy ' s Cross Country Team, under new Coach Mike Gale, had a very good year. The season was highlighted by the strong running of David Nash and Tony Freeman. The team finished with a 46-23-1 record and had a winning record against 23 schools. The Bears took Fourth place in the Metro, Fifth place in Districts, and won the Polar Bear Invitational. David Nash placed first overall in three meets, and placed seventh in the Metro Meet. The entire team was dedicated, worked hard and contributed to the sea- son. The Girl ' s Swim Team had another successful year. They ended with a 6-5 record and won the North Invitational, outscoring Ft. Dodge, Boone, Oskaloosa and Indianola. The team went to the State Meet for the fourth consecutive year. Anne Kramer placed 11th in diving, Kathy Lattimer was 20 in the breaststroke. The Medley Relay of Angie Dubbs, Kathy Lattimer, Stephanie Boozell, and Carol Boyce was 19th. The Freestyle relay of Carol Boyce, Jeanette Wiedemeier, Diane Hawkins, and Angie Dubbs also placed 19th. Row Three: Divers Wes Duren and Mark McDonald. Not Pictured Darcy Field. The biggest drawback to the success of this year ' s boys Swim Team was the size of the squad. After a large number of boys showed up for the sign up meeting, the team size slowly dropped throughout the season. Of the 25 or so boys who originally started 14 finished the year. Despite the size of the squad, Paul Weidemeier, Alan Pickett, Bill Evans and Larry Young turned in good performances. The first few meets of the season were used by North as hard practices to get in shape for the Boone meet. The Boone Meet was one the Bears had a legitimate chance to win, but the expected second and third places didn ' t come in, and the bears dropped a close one. A long Christmas layoff hurt the bears, and the next close meet was a po- tential win at South East Polk. The meet was dropped partially by the feeling among the team that the season was lost. The tankers then prepared for Indianola the conference meet, and the dis- trict meet. Despite a 0-12 record, they worked hard at ev- ery meet. Coach Thorpe was very pleased with the girls ' efforts. She felt they were a fine group of kids, and were the most determined team she has seen in a long time. The team was young and inexperienced, but leadership was provided by Co-Captains Robin Baxter and Becky Birmingham. 1984-85 GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL Row One: Marget DeBrown, Lesliee Carr, Diana Woods, Chris Judge, Robin Baxter, Debbie Kroll, Marguerite DeBrown, Sandy Adam s Manager. Row Two: Assistant Coach Bob Hybl, Head Coach George Davis, Kelly McFarland, Andrea Murray, Marilyn Cason, Rose Galbreath, Shannon Simmons, Julie Caster, Kathy Lattimer, Janice McClintic, Stephanie Boles; Manager. The Varsity Girl ' s Basketball Team started this last year of Six on Six rules with a new coach; George Davis. Davis was named to replace Bud McCrea, who left for a coaching spot at Panora. The team went into the season optimistically, with Davis predicting sixteen victories. The team started the season with a win against Roosevelt and a loss at Waukee. The Bears rebounded and took second in the McDonalds Polk County Tournament. The rest of the season was up and down. Among the most memo- rable games was a one point win at Hoover with seconds remain- ing. The Bears finished the season strong with a win against Roose- velt in a game that was televised on Heritage Cablevision, and a North record Seven Game winning streak. Rose Galbreath had a number of accomplishments this year. Besides challenging for the Metro Scoring lead, she set a North record with 55 points against S.E. Polk. Rose set another record with fourteen straight free throws she made against Pleasant Val- ley. She was named to the McDonalds All-Tournament team along with Kelly McFarland, Shannon Simmons, and Marguerite DeBrown. The Bears finished with an 11-10 record, and took second in their sectional. Rose Galbreath and Kelly McFarland were named first team all- metro and Shannon Simmons was second team. The 1984-85 Boy ' s Basketball team started the year relatively inexperienced and a little short, but the Polar Bears soon overcame these prob- lems. The team started slowly and didn ' t get their first win until they played Saydel. The rest of the season was a difficult one for the Bears, they lost some close games, and though they may have gotten blown out in one or two, they still played well and were a real threat in every game. Once the team started clicking, they picked up enough wins to finish in the middle division of the Met- ro Conference. Tommy Young, Anthony Bell, and John Purdy all turned in good performances, but Coach Green appreciates all the hard work put in by the rest of the team. Though the team didn ' t finish as high as some may have wished, Coach Green praised the team for their tremendous character and determination. f J noxville 68 iianola 57 -or- fowling 63 ftforth CO Savdkl 33 No ft 4i ley 36 North 54 Roosevelt 52 North 67 Lincoln 84 80 Tairft 65 46rjp 55 Jo 4™ 359 Nortrf 52 N rj No North 47 North 54 North 50 North 65 Ames Hoover Dowling Valley Roqsevelt Lincoln East Ames Hoover Dowling 46 JUNIOR VARSITY ACTION Sophomore ' s seek experience Dorothy Barber, Autumn Gilespie, Julie Raster, Bonnie Mingo, Kathy Lattimer, Mary Kimble, Suprina Bowlden, Gaylene Shay, Coach Lowell Long. The team lost some early games by a wide margin, but closed the gap as the season went on. Coach Long felt the girls showed steady improvement through the year. The main objective of this season was to get as many players as possible into the game, and specifically the forward court. This gave everyone the practice at shooting the ball. The season was mainly a building block for next year ' s 5 on 5 switch. All players got ample playing time, and though there wasn ' t any one outstanding player, Coach Long praised the girls for their hard work and persistence. Bottom The 1984-85 Boys Sophomore Basketball Team didn ' t have an overly successful year but they still gave a good showing, and didn ' t give up. There were many players on the team that showed good potential, especially Cory Floyd and Rico Burkett, both of whom were called up to the varsity squad at mid season. The entire team worked hard, and each player should be commended for the effort and persis- tence they had all through the season. 51 A WHOLE NEW BALLGAME I • i Roxanne Right, Alisa Lockman, Trena Paige, Tracy Hale, Paula Baker, Coach Larry Johnson, Melissa Mullins, Tammy Wickett, Fonda Lovelady, Mindy Sharp, Rhonda Harrison. This season, the Freshman Basketball team was different from the rest of the North Girl ' s Basketball Program. Fresh- man are now playing 5-on-5 rules, as opposed to the more tra- ditional 6-on-6 style After a lawsuit against the IGHSAU paved the way for the 5-on-5 game, the Metro Conference decided to switch Varsity play to the 5-on-5 rules in the 1985-86 season. To facilitate the move, freshman squads are already playing the updated game. This season for the freshman girl ' s team was an educational experience. The girls learned a lot about the new 5-on-5 game as the season progressed. The games were a new experience to the girls, who had previously played the 6-on-6 style. The team worked hard in practices to familiarize themselves with the new rules and strategies, and they played to the best of their abilities in all the games. Coach Johnson thinks the girls are a hard working bunch, and he is pleased with the effort they put out, both in prac- tices and games. 1984-85 BOYS FRESHMAN BASKETBALL Row One: Carl Rowland, Tony Williams, Mike Mason, Kelly Burkes, Troy Hazelbaker, Tony Hardin, Larry Rose, Jim Frost. Row Two: Coach Don Sears, Eric Larson, Cory Hunter, Jeff Rhodes, Mike Hendricks, Joe Alexander, Ike Cox, Kevin Wilson, Sammy Clark, Paul Potts. The 1984-85 Freshman Basketball Team was not a Metro powerhouse, but they did show improvement throughout the year. Though the A team was winless, Paul Potts, Ike Cox, Kevin Wilson and Mike Mason all contributed completely to the team effort. Potts, Cox, and Wilson were called up to the sophomore team late in the season. The B team won twice, defeating Ames and East. Troy Hazelbaker, Kelly Burkes, Joe Alexander and Jeff Rhodes all contributed heavily to the effort. Both Teams also participated in the Urbandale and AAU post season Tour- naments. The teams had little or no team experience when the season started, but they learned and improved throughout the season. Coach Sears felt the games were very competitive, though the scores didn ' t look like it. The team had a deep desire for person- al and team improvement and they grew as people and players. GRAPPLERS HAVE A GOOD YEAR (Top Row) J.J. Smith, John Pugh, Robbie Taylor, Neil Williams, Randy Childers, Jim Russell. Bottom Row: Phil Glenn, Khamphoui Baccam, D.J. Schmidt, Mike Murphy, Todd Blair. Coach Mike Gale has brought success to the North-Tech Wrestling program. The team fin- ished with the best dual meet record since 1961- 62, and had 29 place winners and 4 champions at tournaments. Neal Williams was the outstanding wrestler and had the best overall record, who also qualified for state (Hwt). Coach Gale hoped for a winning season, a top division fin- ish in districts, and to qualify 4 wrestlers for the state meet. Coach Gale felt the team lacked some aggres- siveness, but was hard working and dedicated. KEY CLUB helps NORTH Some of you may be wondering, What is Key Club? Key Club IS a service for North High and the com- munity. So far this year they have sent Happy Hal- loween, Christmas, and Valentines messages. They raised 1,500 canned goods in an effort to raise food for needy people in Des Moines at Christmas time. This year the Key Club had a bake sale with other clubs and raised $100. In February the Key Club had sponsored a mixer. In April the Key Club members had a convention with the Kiwanis Club. There were about 30 members when the school year started and there are only 20 members left at the end of the school year. 109 PEP CLUB Pep Club is an important part of North High School.
