Together: A New Beginning was the theme for Homecoming 1982. The festivities began with Spirit Week on Monday September 20 with crazy hats, socks, jeans, t- shirts, and shades day. Tuesday was Hush day and the girls couldn ' t talk to the guys all day. Other days included Way Out Wednesday, Dowling Dress Code Thursday, and Spirit Pride, or green and white day on Friday. The homecoming football game was held on Friday, the 24th, against Dowling. The Polar Bears fell 35-7. The dance was held in the girls gym on Saturday and ap- proximately 175 people attended, the largest turnout in recent years. Homecoming Royalty consisted of freshman princesses Donna Simpson and Missy Foggia, sophomores Raquel Way and Marcie Rundle, and juniors Michele Garcia and Leslie Hainline. Senior princesses were Michelle Mattson and Diana Catrenich. )eana Petefish was named Homecoming Queen for 1982 and joe Reese was cho- sen as Mr. Polar Bear by the student body. This years theme was chosen as a symbol of unity between North and Tech, with whom we merged for the first time in athletics. 8 Stan LaMay sits back and relaxes, as usual 14 Dollie Hudson and friend. On that date, the North High football team won their first game in five years, beating Valley High 15-7. It was a long dry spell for the team, and the fans, but the victory was a welcome sight to proud North supporters. Coach Dwayne Crozier gives thanks to the team and the people who attended the game (top left) and later the coaches ring the dusty victory bell which was dug out of the closet after a five season absence (below left). Lynn VanderLinden shows her support on game day by wearing her sweatshirt and tags (top right), and one of the posters made by a second hour class is shown as it was hanging on the walls in the main lobby. 16 Doug Lutz snowplows the parking lot, but he doesn ' t have a plow Hyun Kim works on a science project during school. Court- warming week was held from January 17 to 21. There was a spirit week, student guests of honor from each grade, and a mixer following the Roosevelt boys and girls basketball doubleheader. Courtwarming was the idea of the Pep Club, and it proved to be a good one indeed. The main theme of the homecoming-style event was Sharing Horizons and was con- ducted to show how well the athletic merger with Tech was do- ing. Spirit days included a grub day, Hush day, way out day, 50 ' s and 60 ' s day, and a colors day. Finalists for the ' royalty ' were selected by the student bodies of the two schools with Tech ' s students select- ing the North winners. Those chosen to represent North at the basketball game were: fresh- man Darcy Dunlap, sophomore Ryan Aldrich, junior Kelly Cox, and senior )oe Fitzgibbon. Each winner was introduced between the boys and girls games by Dr. Ray Pugh. They all received a medallion with a handshake on the front and TNT Courtwarming 1983 printed on the reverse side. The combined forces of North and Tech started the season with bright hopes, despite the fact that the first four opponents were rated teams. After a 34-0 loss at the hands of Urbandale, ranked 1 in class 3A at the time, North began to improve steadily. The prospect of a winning season was evident when the Bears battled undefeated East to a heartbreaking 7-0 loss. After a tough game against 3 Dowling, the Bears came back, with a vengence against Roosevelt, only to be edged 13-9. This heartbreaker proved to be a mental let down in the next two games, as the Bears were trounced by both Lincoln and Hoover. The ultimate climax of the season came when the Polar Bears, playing in their green home jerseys for the first time, brutily defeated 9 ranked but over-confi- dent Valley, 15-7. The victory ended a 40 game losing streak that stretched back over five seasons. The 1982 Polar Bear offense was lead by ]oey Townsell. The bruising fullback amassed over 600 yards, with an average of five yards per carry. Quarterback Richard Smith passed for over 400 yards. Billy Frein, his favorite target, caught nine passes for over 200 yards. The defense was lead by Rod )orgenson, Jim Puffett, Rico Porter, and Kary Dunn. Joe Fitzgibbon and Glen Norwood lead in pass interceptions. Scoreboard Tells Story The scoreboard showed no time left and hundereds of estatic North fans stormed the field at Hutchins Stadium in a frenzied celebration. This was the scene October, 22nd 1982, when the Polar Bears broke a five year, 40 game losing streak by defeating the 9th ranked Valley Tigers 15-7. Much praise should be given to all the dedicated fans who stuck behind the Bears and faithfully awaited victory all these years. From the likes of Byron Wells, Mark Bueford, Tom Morgan and Keith Robinson the team came alive. At the basketball jamboree at the beginning of the year, the boys didn ' t look real promising, dropping the third quarter of the game to East High. After that pre-season loss, the Polar Bears took off, never looking back. They shifted into high gear with nine straight wins, and beat teams that were state rat- ed, such as number four Hoover and number nine rat- ed Roosevelt. The Polar Bears ' first state rating took them all the way to number four in the polls, before dropping their first game, after Christmas break, to ' Valley. But the Bears came back and posted a very easy win over East, only to drop their next two games of the season to Cardinal Stritch of Keokuk and then a very disheartening loss to Dowling. The remainder of the season was up and down for the Bears. They downed Roosevelt, then romped Lincoln, and finally fell to Hoover, in probably the most important game of the season, because the metro championship was really on the line. With revenge on their minds the Bears downed Val- ley, to wrap up at least a second place finish in the metro. The Polar Bears had a good chance to go far in the state tournament, possibly all the way to state. 46 I Filz and B Wells hit jumpers. Reboundi ng with 11 consecutive victo- ries sweeping up the Polk County Classic tournament along the way the girls earned themselves a 3 state ranking. Breaking this winning streak was an upset to 9th rated East (67-50) followed by another to Hoover (48-55) dropping the girls out of the top ten and to third in the Metro, with East and Lincoln taking first and second. The girls had a good chance of getting into the State tournament and high hopes of a State Championship. AS— Wi Leadership Unity_ ■ Kt HOINCS NORTH Brotherhood Spirit ■ 100 Key Club Serves North and Community The North High Key Club of 1982- 83 had a quite successful year, with many activities planned and carried out. Included in these projects were: a mixer, a parks project, helping with Pancake Day, a ski trip, and a trip to the regional meeting in Omaha in No- vember. The Key Club, which is affiliated with the Highland Park Kiwanis Club of Businessmen, also sent members to the weekly luncheons by the Kiwanians at the Bavarian Haus. This year the Key Clubbers assisted the Kiwanians in many projects, and Key Club members from the metro high schools even made a commercial to promote the Boys High School Metro Basketball Jamboree. The jam- boree, held at North, was staged with proceeds going to aid the handi- capped children of Iowa. The members of Key Club were from all grave levels, but the officers were three seniors and a junior. They were: President joe Modrick, one year; Vice President Denny Miller, two years; Secretary Missey Gassaway, two years; and Treasurer Amy Fargo, one year. Ten other members completed the Key Club membership, which met ev- ery Tuesday at 7:30 first semester, and switched to Monday mornings the second semester. Advisor for the Key Club was Mr. Randy Cordon, an English teacher at North. A need arose and Leroy Parsons was there to fill the gap. As long as anyone can remember Mr. Parsons has been in charge of organizing the light and stage crew. Whether it was a major musical, a chorus recital, or a simple senior meeting, all it took was one meeting with Mr. Parsons and your lights and any extra stage work were done. Mr. Parsons, who is also our wood- working instructor, had a staff of four students working with him this year. They are as follows: sophomores Pat Warren and john Bohall, junior David Martelli, and senior Becky Hunnell. Thank you for lighting up our life! The class met in two groups on Monday and Wednesday and on Tuesday and Thursday alternating with gym class. Cheerleaders Show Pride and Support Spirit and pride are two of the most important aspects in having a successful cheerleading squad, and this years squad had more spirit and pride than could be measured. This years 1982-1983 North High cheerleaders were extremely supportive. Whether it was hot or cold, through rain, sleet, or snow the cheerleaders were always there. Early in the season, some people thought that the North-Tech merger would bring problems, especially on the cheerleading squads. But the cheerleaders proved them wrong. The merger wasn ' t a problem at any of the grade levels, and that was a surprise to a lot of people. No matter if it was a small non-conference game, or a b ig game that was so important that it placed North in the state tournament, the cheerleaders were out giving their all. When a player is out on the court or out on the field giving their all, and he or she hears the cheerleaders yelling and screaming for them, that makes them dig a little deeper and strive even harder to make that important basket, or gain those extra couple of yards. On behalf of the athletes at North, we would like to say thanks for being there. We really appreciate it. On November 5th and 6th they pre- sented Neil Simon ' s The Odd Couple and it was a smash. The play was about two friends who are complete opposites. Oscar Madison, who is a happy-go-lucky slob, while his friend Felix Unger is a fussy, very methodical type fellow. Through the fate of a divorce they end up living together and the action centers around the con- flicts that occur when this very odd couple start to drive each other crazy. The superb acting and perfect characterization also helped to make the play all the more entertaining. The play was directed by Mrs. Robin Vanderhoef, and the cast included; )oe Reese — Oscar Scott Drew — Felix Jim Puffett - Murray Jeff Cannon — Speed Richard Colbert — Roy Pat Warren — Vinnie Kathy Britt — Gwendolyn Pidgeon Theresa Lorenz — Cecily Oscar just Can ' t take losing at poker :ar once again 117 North Presents ' Diary of Anne Frank ' This drama is based on the diary of the daily existance of a group of Jewish families hiding from the Germans in Amsterdam during World War II. A young Jewish girl (Anna Akermark) Anne Frank maintains a daily chronicle of the group ' s life in hid- ing. The diary, represented by the play, reveals powerfully the thoughts and feelings of Anne and the others in the group. Eventually the Germans capture the group and most die in German concentration camps. Only the diary lives on. Mime Club Has Quietly Joined North A new addition to North High this year is the mime club, with Mrs. Vanderhoef as the sponsor of the club. The mime club is a group of students who perform theatrical skits without the use of words. To be successful at mime the cast members work a great deal on facial expressions and pre- cision movement. The group performed at the Parks Festival and at River View Manor. Having just been formed this school year, the group is looking forward to expanding next year. Club members include: Carmen Colbert, Kelly Hagge, Ruth Choate, Dina Sheeledy, Teresa Lorenz, and Monique McSparan. - Club members show mime movements 121 First Year for ROTC at North High North High ROTC Unit Commanding Officers This is the first year of ROTC (Reserved Officers Training Corps) at North. There has been a lot of participation this year from students, and it seems that interest in the program is increasing. ROTC can offer many advantages to a student. Some students earn ROTC college scholarships and ROTC helps others to find financial aid. ROTC meets for one hour every day (the students wear their uniforms once a week). For many students, ROTC has become a great learing experience. Tony Freeman and Steve Armstrong discu ss a speech they are about to present Rick Caldwell and Dianna Fisher 122 Cadets Show Dedication This year ' s Kadets are young and have a lot of first year girls, but they have the talent if they real- ly want to work at it. The Kadets have a lot of potential, but they have to be dedicated. I hope that after I graduate, that I can come back and see them doing a great job, like they have been doing in the past. Good Luck! Covering topics from athletic events to featured athletes, and from club news to senior features, the small group worked very well together. The entire Oracle staff, both semesters, was composed solely of seniors. First se- mester staff members were Billy Frein, Joe Modrick, Alan Hawkins, and lerry Tellis. Second semester saw the addition of Kathy Richards and Sue Reeves. Working throughout the year on the Oracle were Missy Gassaway and Mark Weber. However, the ones who did the work did it well, and helped greatly. Fac- ing deadlines and time shortages was difficult for the group, but we made it through on time. I hope you, the student body, enjoy our yearbook, because the ones pictured on this page are the true workers who put the whole thing together.
