It Seems Like Only Yesterday 1981 Varsity Football Squad Powderpuff Football game Memories last a lifetime and as the years go by so quickly it ' s important that you get the most out of your life that you can. As you travel down the long winding road of life it may sometimes seem like only yesterday when one chap- ter ended and a new one began. Remembering that one special high school friend, or that moment when you felt the hero, will be able to bring a reminiscent smile to your face and brighten up a world which seemed so bleak just the moment before. That extremely cold football game, the basketball games, the plays and musicals, or that one time that your hard work paid off and you finally reached your goal, will stand out in your mind and transport you back to simpler days. It is our hope that this yearbook may be a help to pre- serve those once in a lifetime memories. This year ' s Homecoming events got off to a good start. This year ' s activities included, Spirit Week, door decorating contest, sign contest, Senior Faculty game, bug push, and other events. Even though we didn ' t win North students didn ' t give up their spirit. They stood behind the football players 100 per cent. The theme this year was In Search of Your Dreams. It was held in the girls gym and tickets were $4.00 and $5.00 at the door. The homecoming royalty was, Homecoming Prin- cess—Lisa Westendorf, Mr. Polar Bear— Kurt Weeks, Senior Princesses— Tana Kelce, and Joy Hansen, Ju- nior Princesses— Jena Petefish, and Cathy Jorgensen, Sophomore Princesses— Michelle Garcia, and Kim Mick, Freshman Princesses— Raquel Way, and Kathy Murphy. 13 Scott Terry and Tammy Thumps Some new additions to North This years homecoming spirit week had a very good turnout. Some of the activities consisted of the nickel and dime, door decorating, green and white, and post- er contests, a bug race, and the powder puff football game in which the girls upset the faculty 8 to 6. There was also a pie throwing contest. The teachers who had pies thrown at them were Mr. Lehfeld, Mrs. Forrester, Mr. Fitzgerald, and Mrs. Funk. Some ways that students showed their spirit, was by dressing up for special days that were described to them. These days were green and white day, grub day, occupation day, preppy day, and way out Wednesday. Even though the Polar Bears did not win a game all year the Bears played well at times. North started the year with a very heart- breaking 7-6 loss to Indianola. This was North ' s best game. They played hard all the way to the final buzzer, but could not come out on top. Other games the Bears played well in, but the score might not have shown it, were Hoover 64-20, East 47-7, Lincoln 35- 7, and Valley 28-0. This year ' s team had more players out than last year. Hopefully with all of the juniors coming back and most of them with lots of experience, next year ' s team should do even better. junior Doug Strobel takes the hand off and runs up the middle 26 Row 1 (left to right)— Coach Bob Petersen, Tim Rider, Brett Cole, Jeff Canoe, Kevin Godwin, Jeff Burton, Vince Bobenhouse, Brian Colwell, Lynn Sears, Mark Reeves, Larry McGinn, Paul Miller, and Matt Daniels. Not only were the girls in a sectional final against East Des Moines, but a feeling was going through the student body that hasn ' t been felt for guite a few years. It all started as the girls defeated their first round opponent, Tech, 77- 53. Anne Holland led the Bears with 45 points, while Marcene Schomer added 26. Dowling posed the next problem for the Bears. The problem was handled nicely 54-36. Guard ' s Ju- lie Madison, Shari Twist, Diana Catrenich, and Sandra Trogdon shut down the Maroon ' s to 4 first quarter points and 14 for the half. The day started with a morning pep assembely in which the whole school got envoled and saluted the girls. As the girls started warmups about 50 students showed up with green and white painted faces and clothes. This set the stage for one of the rowdiest games to be played in the North gymnasium. The girls came out nervous and fell behind 22-12 in the first quarter. As the noise intensified so did the girls play, gaining to a 35-30 halftime dis- advantage. The battle continued in the third quarter and on to the fourth. The girls tied the game at 48 and 50 with about five minutes left, but a turnover gave East a lead they wouldn ' t relinquish, finally winning 64-59. After the game the fans gave the girls the ovation they deserved. 76 Many North fans ignored the East starters But when the North girls are announced WATCH OUT! 1+ SENIORS Lori Ann Alksnis Laura Leigh Bechman Basketball 1,2,3.4, Golf 4, Band 1,2,3,4,5,6, Drum Major 7, Student Council 3,4, Student Council Secretary 5,6, Debate 3, Pep Club 3, 4,5,6, Honor Roll 3,4,5,6,7,8, Office Asst. 2 Brian Keath Ball Football 3,5,7, Choir 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, My most memorable experience was making the second team, all metro in football. Re- turning letter winners were Ludean Allensworth, Shari Twist, Melinda Krueger, Deb Schaefer, Kathy Rich- ards, Chris Woodruff and Lisa Burgett. Freshman Liz Messerly was the standout on the team. She always came home with medals and ribbons. New girls to the team were Erika Terrell, Robin Baxter, Deb White. This being my last year to coach track we had a lot of fun along with the hard work. I hope that the girls will go out next year, with more girls out North could be good in track.
