Fall was coming and the school building had that fresh waxed smell that says the new year is soon to begin. Everybody was getting ready, because ev- erybody knew they had to go to school. Soon the first day came along, and all of the people got spruced up to go to school. « } 1 r 1 1 The people saw that the tradi- tions and times were changing. The President indicted a price freeze, some of the students gained the right to vote, and many followed the news on the adult rights, including the right to drink at nineteen. There was still more — our concession stand was closed during lunch hour, Mr. Webb left North High, Mr. Brownell came, the seniors elim- inated Baccalaureate; the band made plans to tour Hawaii, and the Spanish club planned a trip to Mexico. There was also another exciting event, the stu- dents staged a sit-in protesting the recommendation that Coach Camp should be dismised from coaching the basketball team. m mm ' ?« ! Despite a fine defensive ef- fort, the Polar Bears lost a heartbreaker to crosstown riv- al East in their conference de- but. After this followed three weeks against Dowling, Roose- velt and Lincoln, all rated powers. A lack of depth cost the Bears needed strength to stay in the games yet, as Homecoming rolled around, N. H. S. was tenacious in its battle against Hoover. The offensive unit tied things up at the half and kept things close until the final quarter. The last two games were played in seas of mud and with the soggy turfs, the grid- ders fell to Valley and tied the Engineers, 6-6. North also had a new coach- ing staff headed by Alex Glann. The thoughts of the people began trailing outside to the world of fresh air and sunshine. The nearby parks were full of stu- dents on week nights as well as weekends. Birdland lagoon, the river, and even the nearby train tressle seemed to be fascinating places to escape to during l unch periods. One thing seemed dif- ferent though, the people had gained a lot of experience. The students knew that they hod changed the routine, each adding to the spirit of North High in their own individual way. And they saw the changes — classes seemed more cas- ual, peoples views became more liberal, a lot of people rode 10 speed bicycles to school, and everybody wore blue jeans and sneakers. They knew that the people make the school what it is. Hey! the people cried. We ' ve learned a lot here! We ' ve changed our school, we ' ve added to it. We ' re not just the students of a school, we are the people of North High. This is our school. This is our year. We believe in ' 72.
