Drake, Rutgers Math and Science Become More Important Realizing that most students will not become mathematicians, the math teachers know that the skills taught in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, college math, and probability will serve a practical purpose in the everyday life of the youth. The knowledge is needed for such common happenings as figuring income tax, shopping for groceries, changing a recipe, or keeping a bowling score. By improving his skills through further education, a student can get a job in such areas as chemistry, economics, business management, or computer work. Needed in all areas, math is definitely a part of life in this time of youth. Above: Students put their work on the boord for classmates to correct. At left: Mr. Knee discusses the intersection of parallel lines. — 1-

Joyce Hata and Patrice Kalleen show the bulletin board that they decorated. Are Key To Future World Peace Bonjour! Buenos dias! Guten Tag! Valete! The translation — Hello in French, Spanish, German, and Latin, the four foreign languages offered at North. German was just added this year. Students of a foreign language must start at the very beginning and learn the basics — vocabulary, gram- mar, new sounds, and spelling. Next, work is begun on writing and speaking. The language lab helps a student with his speaking by letting the student hear the correct pronounciation and then listen to his own voice, through the earphones, as he mimics the tape into the microphone. Languages are becoming more and more important in this time of youth as communi- cations and transportation constantly improve, making the world seem smaller and smaller. This age of nuclear power makes it necessary for nations to understand each other in order to maintain peace. One of the best ways for youth to have understanding is to study lan- guages and customs of other countries. French students use the language lab. — 13—
