PHYLLIS PHOENIX Univ. of Iowa N.W. Missouri, B.A. Drake To qualify students for careers in the field of business and to introduce them to the business world are the chief goals of the Business Education department at North. To achieve these goals, modern teaching devices and actual practice of business techniques and skills are key factors in the everyday procedure of the classes. Drills in typing, taking dictation in shorthand and notehand, keeping records of transactions and accounts for bookkeeping, and receiving training in salesmanship, are a few of the activities of the individual classes. Other business courses such as commercial math, law and geography provide the student with a broader back- ground in economics and industry. —11 — Mrs. McKay keeps time as Sue Waggoner and Lynn Par- rish type.

Mr. Miller helps student plan future courses. Planning Future Education And Careers Keeps Counselors Busy Even though this is a time of youth, students need guidance as they approach their future. The coun- selors help parents serve Northites in this capacity. Schedules must be planned not only so that a student has enough credits to graduate, but also so the classes benefit him in his future education or job. Coun- selors are always willing to help with any problems a student encounters in his life. Keeping records of each counselee is another major job of the counselors. Improved English Skills Make It Easier To Communicate Ideas This year the English department has continued to emphasize the importance of writing quality compositions and of reading both classical and contemporary novels at all three grade levels. Students in sophomore language arts classes read Julius Caesar, and Silas Marner, and had a unit on speech making. Juniors in advanced English read the Scarlet Letter, wrote a research paper on a topic of their own choice and studied American authors and poets. Senior literature students read Macbeth, studied the Canter- bury Tales and learned about life and literature in England. Advanced placement students at the individual grade levels generally studied the same basic topics but went into them in much greater detail and depth. Students use library facilities for research.
