Speech and 2)j ram a Mr. Thompson, director of the Speech and Dramatics Department, has added a great deal to the life of North. In his classes students are taught the art of public speaking and acting. An experimental course, Communica- tion Skills, was being used for the first time this year. Mr. Thompson directs Pom Dawson and ( Music Man ' an all-student-cast production. in a scene of The Writing stories, heads, and planning pages are a sample of the work done in the Journalism Department. With the assistance of Mr. Barnett students learn to write concisely and clearly. They also learn how to sell advertising for the Oracle and Polar Bear. Mr. Wickham discusses like-sounding words with sophomore English class. ommunicaiion tion Slzilis improved A thorough understanding of literature and grammar is the aim of the English Department. Courses are designed to provide a firm background in literature for enjoyment and comprehension. Consideration is also given to college preparation as well as everyday usage. A program begun only two years ago in which juniors are taught the bulk of their literature is used in the general track classes. Business students modify the three R ' s to reading, typing, and adding machines. Vccathnal, Practical knowledge qam4 tknugk The Business Education Department takes in a wide variety of training. The courses are designed to prepare students for work after graduation and for a better understanding of the business world in their daily lives. Those students in the Distributive Education program work in the afternoon during their senior year. Girls wishing to become stenographers take a five- semester course in typing and a four-semester course in shorthand. Commercial geography, commercial arithmetic, and commercial law pro- vide a broader background of economics and industry throughout the world. Clerical Practice and Basic Skills Review are two new courses being added in this department.
