Tarik Propes shows his Polar Power as he fights to recover the ball. Homecoming Is a combination of past traditions and new ideas. This year the traditional coronation, pepfest, game, and dance were held. A new idea was that each class decorated a golf cart for the coronation and parade. Another idea that seemed to work was a wall of football players formed around the candidates to prevent the winners from being trampled. Although the way that we celebrate homecoming may change as new ideas are combined with the best traditions, one thing that will never change is POLAR PRIDE!! Jon Krueze, Rich Carlberg, Keith Stormoen With not much practice or time on their hands the hockey team's season looked dim. In the season opener South handed us a 9-0 loss. But the team looked at the loss as a positive season opener. As the season grew old so did looking at the scores which befell us. The first half of the season we were outscored 74-7, but spirits remained high and the team realized that this was the first year in three that we had a team. Without losing many players to grades or injuries the team stuck together and finally beat Henry 4-0. The team improved overwhelmingly and so did the scores as we were only outscored 47-11 in the second half. Led by Tony Rogers and Damian Petrou in scoring and Captain Scott Eitel and Ari Bergeron in hitting, the season turned out to be one to remember. The team would like to thank the coach John Donovan for his time and patience and for the cheerleaders and the fans who supported us greatly. 32 CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING Coach Doug Clausen. Kay Farmer. Desiree Rlvord, Jessica Ferrell GYMNASTICS In Its first year back, the girls gymnastics team was a big hit. There are over fifteen girls on the team, and four young men coming out as managers to help out. The team did well for their first year. The girls were hindered by injuries but they still kept their winning spirit and put in 100% effort. Although the team won only one meet, judges and coaches said that our girls had the best spirit and supported each other fantastically. The managers and the coaches should be commended for their long hours and fine effort. Front Row: Tammy Little. Jenny Dobovsky. Shannon Johnston Second Row: Nikki Hill. Becky Miller. Cassy Lumpkins. JESSE JACKSON When the Reverend Jesse Jackson arrived at North on Friday, February 19, people were really nervous and excited. The 1988 Presidential Candidate delivered a great speech. He quoted Martin Luther King Jr. by saying that you shouldn't look at someone by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. The Reverend Jesse Jackson, who is a very intelligent and down to earth person, lives in Chicago. He recieved a North High Jacket as a gift from North High School. Erik Second Brophy COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM The Comprehensive Program is made up of all of the students at North who are not in a magnet program. Of the 1,350 students at North, 700 are in the Comprehensive Program. In order to be in the Comprehensive Program, students have to live in the North district. The Comprehensive Program consists of classes like Drivers Education, Art. Sewing. Business, Physical Education. Math. English, and Social Studies. FOND AMENT AL MAGNET The Fundamental Magnet is one of the many alternative programs at North. The program is different from the other programs is several ways. First of all, there is a written contract each student and parent signs at the beginning of each school year. Secondly, parent-teacher contact is emphasized. The teacher makes sure the parent knows when a student misbehaves, or is not doing his work. The teacher also calls home to report good news. There is a lot more homework in this program. The program is dedicated to the concepts of scholarship, courtesy, respect, responsibility and citizenship. Although the teachers are strict, they are fair and they want the very best for each student. 61 SPANISH CLUB Front Row: Wyatt McDill. John Marek, Lena Humphreys. Debbie Kirkland. Mrs. Beasley has come a long way over the many years of working experiences. As a teenager her desire was to become a principal. In 1975 she worked her way up from teacher to assistant principal. In 1986 her dream came true here at North High. Mrs. Beasley started her dream at the age of 16 when she graduated from a local high school in Arkansas. When Mrs. Beasley graduated, she was given a math scholarship to attend college. She was the 11th child out of twelve children and she was the first to attend college. Mrs. Beasley's first teaching job was in her home state in North Little Rock. Arkansas where she taught math. Then she moved to Chicago where she taught high school math. In 1971. she moved to Minnesota. She has taught and served as assistant principal in 10 different Minnepolis schools such as Lincoln Junior High. West High. Washburn and many many more. She is the first female principal of North Community High School and the only female principal at the High School Level. In her spare time she likes to do volunteer work with youth. She also takes night classes so she can complete work for her Ph. D. degree. Although Mrs. Beasley is very active in the community, her major priority is North. Mrs. Beasley's goals for improvement in the school system are to have more parent involvement in the schools, to build self esteem in students, and to increase achievement and attendence among students. 122 ADMINISTRATION Assistant Principals Robert Johnson. John Bos tad and Judy Hornbacher help make North a great school. Robert Johnson has been an assistant principal for eight years at three Minneapolis schools. He was at South High for two years at Phillips Junior High for two years; he is currently in his fourth year at North. He also taught Special Education at Bryant Junior High for fourteen years. In his spare time He likes to go fishing and play raquetball. Mr. Johnson's major priorities at North are to keep the school running smoothly, to help with the buses and to see that the students graduate on time. John Bostad is impressed by the way our school is run; he sees more leadership and he likes how the students show a great deal of responsibility. His responsibilities are to take care of the programming of all classes, the Summatech magnet and the Math and Science departments. His first job as an assistant principal was at Minneapolis Central High where he served for seven years. He also was at Roosevelt; he is currently in his second year at North. Mr. Bostad believes that students should take responsibility for their actions. Before Judy Hornbacher worked for the Minneapolis Public Schools she worked for a California school district. She began working with the Minneapolis school board, and she is currently in her third year at North. Mrs. Hornbacher’s priorities at North are to make students feel welcome and honored. She also makes sure that students attend their classes on a regular basis. Mrs. Hornbacher's responsibilities include the Visual and Performing Arts magnet, the KBEM magnet and the Fundamental program. She is also in charge of discipline cases and attendance. Her future plans are to be a Principal of a school in the • Minneapolis area. 123 Jock Abrahamson. Down Allon. Jed Allison. Gene Anderson. It was started by Edith Garmecy, a School Social Worker, and Agnes Berger, a North High Home Economics teacher. The idea behind the program was to have child care so that students who are parents could stay in school. There are thirty teenage mothers and thirty children that attend the North High MICE Program. Last year nine moms graduated. This year 14 moms are expected to graduate. MICE helps young moms in many ways. One way, is that they know their child will be well taken care of. They have counseling for family problems, and there are seven staff members to take care of the kids. MICE students have to take a parenting group (PGI) for three trimesters and Child Development for the whole time they are in MICE. PGI is an opportunity to learn parenting skills by working with real babies in a supervised setting. Students learn about child development in a formal classroom setting. Then and Now Changes in the North Community Harrison Salisbury Sports Champions Alumni Association North Community High School 1500 James Avenue North Minneapolis. Minnesota 55411 100th Anniversary — Title Page THE BUILDINGS Prior to the year 1888, North side residents were obliged to attend Central High School. The first public suggestion of any change of this condition wasn't made until February 18, 1888, by a very public-spirited citizen of the North Side. W. J. Abernathy. His ideas were printed in the Minneapolis Chronicle. He advocated the erection of a High School on the North Side. By the end of 1888, the North High School had been erected on Emerson Avenue between 18th and 19th Avenues North. This building came to be known as Logan School. It opened its doors on January 1. 1889. Due to rapidly increasing enrollment it was found that the old Logan School was going to be inadequate, therefore construction of a new building at the Fremont Avenue site was begun in 1895. It opened its doors on September 29, 1896 to students grades eight through twelve. Soon after its opening additions were made to the south side for manual training rooms and to the north side for regular classrooms. North High, the original building on Fremont Ave. Fall 1896 FIRE OF 1913 Fire destroyed the old North in Jur s, North functioned in this building until June 18, 1913, when a fire broke out and consumed most of the school, with only the northeast wing escaping serious damage. The source of the fire is believed to have been traced to the wood shop where sawdust was left in containers with oily rags. When the fire was extinguished, two firemen lay dead. During the years of 1913-1914, while the building was being reconstructed, North High students attended the old Central High School. In Septrmber of 1913, the Board of Education began to rebuild the building, with the addition of the auditorium wing. 1913. The reconstructed North in 1915. 100th Anniversary — BUILDINGS It is not the halls and classrooms and books that make a school, but rather the people who walk those halls, populate those classrooms, and use those books. A school, then, is people; a potpourri or ideals, obligations, and purposes. It is the responsibility of the school to provide a broad forum for student expression and activity. The Alumni Board thought that when the old North was torn down it would be the end of the Association. They found out that it is the people not the building that is important. The statue of Abe holds a lot of memories for people who went to the Old North. Today old Abe stands in the main office of the new North. The finishing touches were placed in the all-new $9 million North High School at 16th and James Avenue North, in 1973. It is designed in two separate wings connected by a broad skyway. The building also boasts a radio and television station, capable of producing closed-circuit TV programs. North High School also has a very successful magnet program, that consists of Visual Performing Arts, KBEM Radio Broadcasting, Advanced Tech, Summatech. 100th Anniversary — BUILDINGS PRINCIPALS John N. Greer 1889-1892 The beginning was very discouraging for Mr. Greer. The children had been located in various attics, stores and churches and were to be transferred to the new building when the semester opened. Waldo W. Hobbs 1892-1934 When he came to North, the high school department numbered 170 pupils and thirteen teachers. Enrollment was up to approximately 2.841 students. Stop! I know yoo-what's your name. was his famous expression. Albert Bank 1934-1952 There is an attachment to the school that one can’t get in any other way. This leads to a determination to make that school the best possible. Mr. Bank graduated from North and married Miss Haveson, the Phy Ed. teacher. Mr. Maass 1952-1956 Years of devoted service, copablc leadership and a never ending interest in our activities made Mr. Maass an exceptional principal. Chester Johnson 1956-1966 Roland Delapp 1967-1972 David Roffers 1973-1974 He was remembered as being the fairest principal, treating everyone equally. His two guidelines were be where you are suppose to be and do what you are suppose to do. Former students remind him and thank him for demanding these things of them. Mr. Delapp tried to keep the school running smoothly although there were some heavy trials. He participated in the planning of the new school. He was the first principal at the new North High School. In the past one-hundred years. North High School has had a total of thirteen principals. However, there were only six principals in the first seventy-seven years. 100th Anniversary — PRINCIPALS FROM 1888 TO 1988 Richard Green 1975-1976 Mr. Green taught at the old North, coached basketball, was a superintendent for Mpls., and is currently Chancellor of N.Y. City schools. Lawrence E. Zimmerman 1977-1978 Mr. Zimmerman taught at the old North. Fred J. Sheridan 1979-1980 His whole family are Alumni of North High School. He went on to become principal of South High School. Jerry Simondet 1981-1982 Jerry Simondet went on to become principal of Edison High School. Robert Lynch 1983-1986 He went on to become principal at Washburn High School, and is currently principal at Edina High School. He felt his work at North was a mission rather than a job. Willarene Beasley 1987 — Present Mrs. Beasley's excellent leadership has allowed North to continue to rebuild it’s reputation as one of the finest High Schools in Minnesota. After the Plymouth uprisings in 1967, North underwent some dramatic changes. The principals in the late sixties, seventies and eighties worked very hard to bring North through its transitional years. 100th Anniversary — PRINCIPALS WOMEN ALUMNI OF NOTE Between 1888 and 1988 our school has had many people go through the doors. These people include the Andrew Sisters, Andrea Hricko, Howard Viken, Robert Vaughn, Marv Wolfenson and Harvey Ratner, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and many, many others. We are proud of these and all of the alumni who have brought a rich tradition to our school. Although he did not graduate from North, Charlie Williams made a great impact on our school. His official title was Hall Aide, but most people knew him as the Advisor to the principal . He collected money, food, and clothing for students in need. Even outside his job at North. Charlie was known as someone who was always willing to help people. The auditorium in the new North High is named after him. Linda Gilreath — She was North's Homecoming Queen in 4971. She graduated in 1972. Andrews Sisters — They have recorded some 900 sides, sold over 75 million records and have 19 gold records to their credit. North Side. They raised seven girls, and two boys, all of whom graduated from North. At the 1968 reunion in the old school, they entertained for us and provided the audience with some delightful musical numbers. The picture includes some grandchildren also, and one or two of the family are missing, but we would like to tell you what this family has done with very little resources. Mr. Witherspoon worked many years in a shoe shining establishment as well and in a garage washing cars. Next came a job at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in SE. St. Paul from which he retired. However, at 74 years of age. despite having to have both legs amputated because of diabetes, he still works three days a week shining shoes at a large building downtown. Jacobi Jack Moskowitz was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1940. He moved to North Minneapolis in 1944 and has remained there since. After graduating from North in 1958, he went on to fulfill his lifetime dream of becoming a teacher. He attended four years at the (J of M and then went to St. Thomas to get his Masters Degree. Immediately he started teaching at Lincoln Elementary, which lasted ten years. In 1974 he started teaching at North High, where he is today. Mr. Moskowitz was one of the first and is one of the finest teachers at the new North High School. His students usually describe him as nice, mean, straight forward, and comical. With this personality and character, combined with all of his knowledge and willingness to share it, students get an excellent teacher and a great friend! Harriet Madigan taught math at North High School for forty-two years. She was a highly intelligent woman who graduated from the University of Minnesota at the age of 19. The fact that she attended every North basketball and football game for 41 years, shows her complete love and dedication for North High School. The Media Center is named after her. Mr. Jacobi — or Jake”, as everyone called him, graduated from River Falls. Wisconsin in 1920. In 1929 he came to the old North High on Fremont Avenue, where he coached basketball until 1968 when he retired. During his hears at North his teams won five City Championships and in 1933 and 1938, were runners-up in the State Tournament. Jake was never too busy to give of himself to his friends. The gym is named after him. His famous saying is I never met a bad boy . Viola Marti “The day I came to North was the happiest day of my life, and the day I left was the saddest. With a sparkle in her eyes, a warm smile, a strong voice and with sincere pride in North High she shares good news about former students and faculty members. Her spirit and physical being belie her ninety-one years. Truly she radiates joy when she recalls those precious years at North. How blessed we North High Alumni were to have been taught, guided, inspired and loved by faculty members such as Viola Marti. 100th Anniversary — FAMCXJS TFACHFRS 00 00 0 Mi O O to TEACHERS THEN AND NOW Have teachers really changed over the past 100 years? It is more accurate to say that teachers have had to adapt to the way society was. Teachers years ago tend to be remembered as extremely dedicated and strict, but one also should realize that while the economy was low the teachers were getting paid more than the average worker. They were highly respected in the community. On April 29, 1898, the Minneapolis Public Schools ran out of money, and the teachers continued to teach without pay for the rest of the year. Teachers today are also very dedicated. They have had to adapt to dramatic changes in society. They have to relate to the students in such a different way now then in the past. A teacher, in this present day and age must tend to the students needs which sometimes requires them to take on the responsibility of a parent, counselor and a friend. The times have somehow changed the definition of teacher , and at North High we can honestly say that our teachers have always lived up to the challenges before them, both then and now. 100th Anniversary — TEACHERS THEN AND NOW . , ' • • • . ' V •• v • , THE TRANSITIONAL YEARS On the night of July 20. 1967, violence came to Plymouth Avenue. At about 11:30 PM. that night a Molotov Cocktail burst against and burned a garage owned by 5th Ward Alderman Joe Greenstein. In hours after that event, full-scale uprisings broke out. rocks were thrown through windows, more than 30 fires were set. and shootings were reported. When the uprisings ended, many businesses were burned out and boarded up. A once prospering commercial area of the city was nearly destitute. In 1988, 21 years later, blacks and whites work together at the site of Plymouth Center. Plymouth Avenue has turned a full cycle. It began as a business district, later was scarred by uprisings, was boarded up. then reborn during the next 3 years, again as a business district. 25 years ago, Plymouth Avenue was crowded with stores, which were mostly owned by Jewish merchants. That has now changed to being owned and run by mostly blacks. Plymouth Avenue. 1988 100th Anniversary — THE TRANSITIONAL YEARS TRAVELS AROUND AMERICA Harrison E. Salisbury OUR PULITZER PRIZE WINNER Harrison Salisbury was an editor of the 1925 Polaris. which, back then, was the size of the major newspapers in Minneapolis. He then went on to become a Pulitzer Prize winning author. Harrison has spent much of his time around a slim gray Remelle portable typewriter, which has been his glory and his pain. It led him to a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Soviet Union for the New York Times, which took him behind the lines as the first Western reporter to record the U.S. bombing of civilian areas of Hanoi; and to China, to produce a ground-breaking history of Mao Zedung's long march. He lived his childhood in a house built by his grandfather on Royalston Avenue in a neighborhood of Jewish immigrants in North Minneapolis. All that’s left on Royalston Avenue today is a collection of warehouses on the downtown side of the Farmers Market. Salisbury graduated from North High at the age of 16 in 1925, went to the U of M, paying his way by working at the Minneapolis Journal. He was editor of the campus newspaper until he was expelled for sending his reporters to test a university edict against smoking in the vestibule of the library. His interest in writing was encouraged by his mother and by his uncle, Andrew C. Anderson, a reporter for the Minneapolis Tribune in the 1980's. Harrison Salisbury is an example of a North High student who began writing for the Polaris Newspaper and went on to achieve the highest honors as a journalist, earning a Pulitzer Prize. 100th Anniversary — HARRISON SALISBURY North High's 1901 Girls basketball team, which was the first girls team at North. North High's 1980 State Basketball Champion Team SPORTS CHAMPIONS Ted Bellfleld celebrates the 1980 State Basketball Championship. tOOth Anniversary — SPORTS CHAMPIONS North High’s 1908 Championship baseball team SPORTS CHAMPIONS Ask any alumnus what winning teams mean and one will most certainly be answered in terms of football. The 1907 football team is certainly one to be remembered, for they brought North High an unbelievable title National High School Football Champions! Captain of that National team was Franklin B. Lees. The 1907 football team never was scored upon. Their overall point total was 235-0, and this included playing two universities. Franklin B. Lees was a great benefactor of the school and established several scholarships before his death. For the past 12 years one name has become synonymous with winning basketball and with the boys' Minnesota State basketball tournament. Since he took the job as coach in 1976, Tony Queen has guided the boys' basketball team to a 247-35-1 mark, nine Minneapolis Conference Titles, seven state tournaments, two state runner-up finishes and one state title (1980). North High’s 1900 Football Team 100th Anniversary — SPORTS CHAMPIONS THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION North High School has a strong Alumni Association. Perhaps more then any other public high school in the world. North High graduates come back to their school to contribute their money, time and talents. Examples of things alumni have donated are band uniforms, Polarette uniforms, many books to the library, and a beautiful organ. In past years the Alumni Association covered the entire cost of the Homecoming dance and festivities. This year the Alumni Association contributed money to help produce the yearbook. Money is also available for underprivileged students who need such things as eyeglasses, warm clothes and other necessities. A fund was established by a member of the class of 1935 to provide these necessities. He recalled a counselor giving him aid during his years at North. He wanted to assure future students that a fund would be available. All of the money that is raised through the Minneapolis North High Alumni Association. Inc., is channeled directly back into the school. Lor dean Stattine Wick '36. Art Felsen '36. Wlllarene Beasley, principal. Marj Maler. librarian. Hazel Gregory. Librarian, and Edna Downing '36 present 25 new books to the library. These books are a gift to the North library from the class of 1936 in honor of Margaret Hardin Claassen of the class of 1936. This presentation is an example of the many ways in which North Alumni show their loyalty to their alma mater. As we researched the history of this school we learned how countless graduates and teachers have made North a unique and wonderful school. Unfortunately, many of the excellent teachers and alumni have not been mentioned. We tried to choose a variety of alumni that showed how North has evolved as a school. North graduates become leaders in the community and contribute to society in many ways. This has been a fascinating journey for all of us who put these 16 pages together. We wish to thank Steven Ward, a North graduate from 1984. who was responsible for printing all of the photographs in this section. We also would like to thank the Alumni Advisors who provided most of the photographs and articles about the history o our school. Sincerely. Theresa Falley. The class of '88 was proud to be graduating in the 100th year of North High School. The Twins winning the World Series brought the whole state together for a big celebration; Twins fever even got into the school. It was also a very difficult year. Dealing with the senseless death of Pedro Ramos brought students and teachers together as a family. Sno-Daze was cancelled and a memorial service for Pedro replaced the activities. We. the Polaris Yearbook Staff, tried to capture these and other events that made 1988 a year of ups and downs. The Editors would like to thank the students, staff, faculty and administration for their support. We would like to give a special thank you to the Alumni Association for their generous contributions of time, help and money. 145 Editors LaReese Jackson and Mlkkl Davis 607 ?Uarqutttr 4vt. The first North High graduates received their diplomas in 1891. Since that time over 35,000 graduates have become alumni. Our graduates have gone on to become leaders in the community, business, arts, sciences, and athletics. The future is yours. The alumni associa- tion hopes that you will find success and happiness in whatever you do. The challenge is there — meet it head on with determination. Set your goals high — the future is in your hands. The association will help you in 1993 when it is time to plan the five year reunion and again in 2038 when fifty years will have passed, and it is time for the fifty year reunion. Often 10,- 20, 25th year and 30 year reunions are held. The association can help to locate former graduates. Please send any addresses you might acquire, and name changes from marriages, etc. to us in care of North Community High School, 1500 James Ave. N. Mpls, MN 55411, and we will see to it that this is noted on your class list. Please include maiden names — this is very important. 147 pe ro Samos: (September 11, 1970 North's 29 will never be forgotten. Pedro and friends In 10th grade. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud; Under the bludgeoning of chance. My head is bloodied but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade; And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid.
