NORTH COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL 1500 JAMES AVENUE NORTH MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA 55411 STUDENT LIFE 3 CLUBS 17 SPORTS 27 PEOPLE 47 ACADEMICS 105 The yearbook staff thought that the best way to describe the 84-85 school year was “a year of change.” The obvious change is North High itself. The school has made a name and reputation that can be respected and North has acquired such an academic reputation that students are considered elite if they are successful in one of our Magnets. North has changed from the social playground of the seventies to an intellectual and artistical facility of the eighties. Where as many former students simply just wanted to graduate, this year’s students have more far reaching goals such as furthering their education. We, the students of North High, are starting a tradition of excellence. We’ve come a long way in a few years and we’re still excelling. It all started when North created the climate for change. This definitely has been ‘‘A Year To Remember.” 3 1. Watching out for Mr. DeNucci are Dawn Peteron, Mark Lindsey, Gary Holmes. Mike Bramhall. Tim Berry. Alberta Stephenson. Times have changed since then and fashions have too. The people at North express themselves by dressing to suit their taste. A student may choose to either follow a trend or to start one. Fashion is what you make of it whether the style Is In or out. Whether you choose to be VOGUISH or ROGUISH, it's an Individual decision. Dress to please yourself. LIFE AFTER 2 When the 2:00 o’clock bell rings, school is out and everybody is off to do what they have to do. Some don’t have to do anything at all, but to go home and sleep, talk on the phone, or go out and have some fun with their friends. Most of the students at North High start their homework right away so they can go to work later on in the evening. A lot of the students have extracurricular activities they are involved in, and they go straight to practice after school is out. And for some of the unlucky students, they have to be in seventh hour by 2:05. But no matter what people do after 2:00, everyone agreed it was always nice to finish another school day. 4 1. Mr. Roberts works hard at thinking of young persons as whole persons. He works hard at paying attention to the things that are important to young people. He spends lots of time telling them how much energy, pleasure, and insight he gets from them. Mr. Roberts has always wanted to be a teacher. He didn’t know just how fun it would be to go on being a lifelong learner. He likes studying and learning. His job allows him to do these activities all day long. Mr. Roberts likes being with young people, he feels they keep him young. When asked what has been learned from Mr. Roberts classes many students responded that English is not all work. Students have learned to go beyond the obvious, how to write, how to get along with others, poetry is a great way to get out your feelings, friendship, and respect, and that there is more to English than verbs and nouns. Mr. Roberts is a favorite teacher among students because he cares about them. He treats them with much understanding and respect. He takes time out to let his students voice their opinion and explains in a clear way without hiding things. When asked what is so special or different about Mr. Roberts students responded, he relates to teenagers, his sense of humor, caring and sharing, love for students, odd thoughts, and his friendliness. Mr. Roberts says, it is good being among the most liked or respected teachers. However. If our school were fully staffed with adults committed to the success of young persons he would be just as happy being an unknown. Students enrolled in the Visual Arts program have demonstrated strong artistic skills and a high level of motivation. They are exposed to three basic areas of Visual arts study, art as knowledge, art as history and art as skill. There students study the concepts of art in order to make more educated evaluation of art. They are exposed to the historical and cultural development of art in order to be more appreciative of art. In addition they spend two hours each day working on studio problems to increase their skill levels in art. They are also exposed to artists in resident and numerous field trips to develop their awareness of the existence of art locally. Each student is encouraged to develop their own style of working and are required to build a portfolio of their work for post graduation use. VPA Dance Magnet Visual and Performing Arts Dance The dance program is in its third year at North High School. Farewell We used to be frightened and scared to try The things we really don’t understand why We laughed for a moment and started to cry We were crazy Now that the end is already here We reminisce about old yells and cheers Even if our last hoorays were never clear Farewell to you my friends We'll see each other again Don’t cry cause it's not the end of everything I may be miles away, but here is where my heart will stay With you, my friends with you Yesterday's a treasure, today is here Tomorrow’s on it's way, the sky is clear Thank you for the memories of all the laughters and tears Not to mention our doubts and our fears The hypertension we gave to our peers It's really funny to look back after all of these years Farewell to you my friends We’ll see each other again Don't worry cause it's not the end of everything I may be oceans away, but here is where my heart will stay With you my friends, with only you... The last 2 years at North have been very good for me. I am very proud of North High, its magnets and the students. I shall never forget North and I graduate with pride. John Bushey. This is the 84-85 yearbook and I was a co-editor. The crew (who accused me of a lot but never could back anything) made the book what it is. My image of North for the future is positive and I believe that North will produce some of the smartest, well rounded students seen coming out of a high school. When our yearbook got going, we ran smoothly. The main people involved were Tammy Irwin and Virginia Clay, who worked on the sport pages. Anna Beas-ly on the senior section. The photographers, John Bushey and David Saffell. Our index person was Genita Anthony and Co-Editor MaryAnn Toledo. Our advisor was Monica Linhoff, who without her fanatical frantics, I would have never taken our deadlines or book seriously. Thanks for buying our production and if you have the chance, join the yearbook staff next year. Franklin Meadows. 118 WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK ON THE YEARBOOK? I enjoyed being a photographer for the yearbook. I got to meet a lot of people at North High. It was rough at all times, but we were able to pull through. David Saffell “Being on the yearbook staff was a real challenge for me. The challenge of meeting deadlines has helped me realize the importance of being responsible. I am happy to have been a part of the 84-85 yearbook. Tammy Irwin Being on the yearbook staff was exciting. Putting the first all school index for the yearbook was a tough job. but I had fun doing it. Genita Anthony It was a lot of work, but fun work. At deadline time class gets very frantic. (The word processor). “Within the city the Polaris paper ranks right at the top. It’s just as good as any high school paper. These are the words of Ms. Harris, Polaris advisor. Putting out the Polaris is more than a notion. There are many steps involved through the whole process. The newspaper staff publishes nine papers throughout the school year. Here are the steps in a condensed version, each step is important in order to put out a quality paper. 1. Brainstorming — story ideas 2. Assigning the story to a reporter. 3. Reporting — a time to find necessary information. 4. Typing — revising, purifing the rough draft. 5. Headlining. 6. Sending paper to the publisher. 7. Designing the paper, better known as a paste-t) day. 8. Distributing the paper during second hour. Writing for the Polaris takes someone who’s n t afraid to encounter new people, places and situations. It takes someone with a drive to find answer . Ms. Harris describes first trimesters class as Remarkable for being able to do so much. Second trimesters class as Well-balanced, energetic and creative. This year was the first year the Polaris had a student editor-in-chief Tanya Stewart. Harris said, I really liked having a student editor because I think it provided more direction to where the Polaris was going. The North MICE (Mother Infant Care Education) program was designed in 1974 by Agnes Bergee to help young mothers and their babies. In this program the babies stay at school so the young mothers can graduate and provide care for their child. This is a unique program — there are very few like it in the entire country. 101 Fundamental Program The Fundamental Program is just one, out of many programs that has enhanced North High. It is defined as A basis, a foundation and a necessary part of educational roundness.” The program is designed to reach the needs of all students. The program is different from all other programs. There’s more parent involvement and more homework is required than most other programs. Each year that the Fundamental Magnet has run, the enrollment has grown larger and larger, which proves the program’s worth. Lynn Matson giving a hard look at the camera. There was confusion on where the coronation would be held and whether the talent show would be included with Snow Daze or at another time. Finally it was decided to have Snow Daze during the day and delay the talent show until a later date. Nevertheless the junior class council, with the assistance of Ms. Bor-mann and Roz Bakion pulled everything in its place and the North High faculty and students witnessed the first Snow Daze held in the auditorium — It was an exciting event which everyone enjoyed! 4 1) Toni Taylor putting emotion into He’s out of my life. 2) Candidates look on with joyful smiles as Rachel Olson is crowned Miss Snowflake. 3) Don Crawford and Leon Shannon are UNTOUCHABLE as they pop and FREAK” in unison. 4) Shannon Killebrew and Jessi Moore shake to the Men All Pause. 125 ESTIONS PG.4 HISTORY GEOGRAPHY 1) Geraldine Ferraro 2) Mikhail Gorbachev 3) Indira Ghandi 4) D-day 5) Statue of Liberty 6) No, Shirley Chrisholm of New York was 7) Young Urban 1) Bishop Desmund Tutu of South Africa 2) Ethiopia - — 3) Reno, Nevada Mi 4) Bhopal A 5) Lebanon-gJ 6) Because he went to South Africa f j P Wm 7) Geneva. Origin uncertain One of the things which make the 84-85 school year a year to remember are the fads. The fads at North are easy to spot, in fact you’re probably involved in a few of the fashionable fads. Fads have a way of repeating themselves, especially in fashions. Remember, baggies and mini skirts were in long before now. Who knows flared bell bottom pants may come back in style. Fads have a way of making one feel “in” or “with it.” Fads are also fun to follow, if one can afford the various trends. If none of the current fads seem appealing, do like the others who start fads and create their own. Some of the fads at North are captured in this section. There were more but we couldn’t keep up with them. 1 1 2 4 1. A class of students fascinated with state of the art technolgy. 2. Lonnie Bryant gets his catch Kenny Thompson. 3. Polar Grads since the first class in 1889 have become members, and the number of grads is growing to over 35,000 plus. North High graduates have become leaders in business, art, music, science, sports and academics. The association will help you when it’s time for your five-year reunion or your fifty-year reunion. You will receive a fifty-year diploma. The association can help you locate members of your class, or if you need assistance when planning reunions. Please send any addresses you might acquire, and name changes from marriages, etc. to us in care of North Community High School 1500 James Ave W.
