Lees, last surviving member of 1907 North High championship football team, speaking at North High Alumni Meeting: Never think you lack ability or courage .... A will and a desire to win give duty to your home and honor to your school. These ... dictate what you do, what you can do. They build courage when courage seems to fail, regain faith when there seems to be little_____These are some of the things you can build in school. These qualities mold your future role in life, yes, make you strong enough to win, brave enough to face your future life______ HAKKJSZ MJDJtfAA'1 Harriet Madigan taught math at North High for 42 years, until her retirement in 1966. Ms. Madigan said she enjoyed her years at North, especially because her math courses attracted such motivated students. In addition to instructing, Ms. Madigan helped plan homecoming, coached cheerleading, advised members of the student council, organized hall aides, and, sold tickets at athletic events. This dedicated former teacher still attends North High activities. She says North has changed little sine her rewarding years here. 17 SSfflOK SPJKJZ The day has arrived, we are finally here! The team was led by Tammy Irwin, Fay Arnold, Julie Hinton. This team had quickness and the will to work together. In most of their games they were up by at least 20 points by half time. Coach Tom Perry had worked really hard in getting his team together. The daily practices that perry worked out for the girls has brought them to their winning point. The team has been very succesful and had a very good year. Hopefully next year with half of the team returning, they will be able to regain the championship again. This was the first time that the girls sophmore basketball team had won the championship. The captains for the team were Da-phane Hill, and Wendy Ingram. 0 J K jC 95 Row 1. Brian Mattson (11), Mike Bolton (11), and Melvin Simmons (12), also could make it into state. Captain David Zappa, State entrant last year, has just surpassed the state record for the most victories by one individual at the 185lb. class — his total should be over seventy wins by the end of year. Leon Copeland, a junior, contains to add to his school record total of career victories — he will have 100 by the end of the season and has been a five year starter on the varsity. Other wrestlers expected to make outstanding contributions for the polars in the future are Darreus Wilson (10), Brian Jackson (9), Kevin Stringer (9), Richard Lester (9), Larry Morgan (10), Mike Katzmarek (10), Al Hester (11), and Randy Stringer (10). Many talented girls came out and participated. Our team excelled in many events. Samatha Churn did a good job in the two-mile open. Patty Welch, Audrey Spiess and Debbie Mansager did good in the open mile. Shaleta Cole, Tanya Tate, Jessalyn Williams, and Pia Payne did well in the mile relay and 440 open. Our hurdlers did a good job this year; they were Wendy Ingram, Linda Lampley, and Alberta Steveson. Our shot putters and dicus throwers were Sonda Dickson and Doris Williams. Lisa Neal did an excellent job in the high jump for us by winning the City and Regional title; She went to state. Our 880-relay team had an outstanding season. Members broke the high school record of 1:45.0; the new record is 1.44.4. The relay team consisted of Gwen Darden, Vickie Robinson, Lisa Walton, and Yvonne Jefferson. That relay team also took 3rd in the state for that event. Coach Tony Queen said I enjoyed working with the girls and helping them have a winning season. This was the best season that we had. Hopefully, next year many more girls will become involed so that we can have an even more winning season. 102 The Men's Track Team, coached by Richard Chako-s, has a 5-year record of 86 wins and 13 losses. The i ;am, rated in the top 5 in the state, has won 13 major c onference events. The 1981 team finished third in the Class AA State neet. Redd Overton won the state 400 meter cham-f ionship with a time of 49 seconds; Greg Agnew went 13 feet 1 inch in the long jump. Both marks are North r icords. The North Sprint Medley Relay Team set a new city record of 3:32.5 minutes and placed second in the State Meet. Team members were Robert Berry, Doug Brazil, Redd Overton and John Wiley. New Head Coach Kreg Kapitan has a young team returning but expects a large turnout. He will be assisted by former North great Jeff Westbrook. Sprinters and middle distance runners will compose the nucleous of the team with Robert Berry, Frank Robinson, John Wiley and Darrin Whitfield are expected to do well in the relays. Hurdlers Mark Eubanks, Jeff Stephenson, David McCorvey and Darreus Wilson should score well in meets and Mark Eubanks should win the city in the High Hurdles. Returning weight men include Lawrence Coleman, Brian Jackson, John Coleman and Mark Eubanks. 103 104 Members that went to city: FIRST DOUBLES - Cindy Johnson and Michelle Perez. Cross Country Skiing This year was a good year for Cross Country Skiing. Talk about SNOW — we had so much we didn't know what to do with all of it. This is the first time in many years that we have been able to have all our meets at the scheduled times. Randy Halverson, Senior, finished in the top five in most of the races. He was named to the All-City Team. Debbie Mandsager, junior, made All City and she qualified for state competition. We lacked quantity but made up for it with quality. 108 '5 ? it 0KADUAZJOW 81 112 Instructor 113 mm yp Administrators, mi - m2 II l): ANDRE LEWIS, JI'RRV SIMONDET.
