The advisor is Jim Mati-son. In an orchestra or rock band the drums count the time and the bass drives the beat. The relationship between a publication and its readers is like this. When the drums and bass are ' 'cooking,'' good things happen: The Polaris is one of the few high school publication in the state which is produced entirely by students — the reporting, writing, photography, graphics, keylines and printing are all done by students. With more support from the readers like editorial feedback, student artwork and photographs we can make more good things happen. Insanity was the driving force behind this year's Polaris staff. With Jim Beaman, Tim Brophy, Shelly Compton, Judy Hetland, Doug Hill, Debby Kellene, Donelle Manzke, Ron Martin, John Masica, Jack Mas-trud, JeffMastrud, Todd McNeil, Randy Ohnstad, Lori O'Lexa, Linda Olson, Joy Rath, Marla Rogers, Sue Sager, Teri Sanford, Joanne Shand, Nancy Thill, Margueritta Tucker, and Sandy Whitney, all working together, what other than total psychopathic montage of creative genius could we come up with? Here it is, the 1979 Polaris. ' 'If you don't like it seniors'', as Bill Murray says, ' 'Go on, Get out of here- we mean it! ! ! '' Get involved -it gives you a sense of belonging and being a part of life. Get involved -what we don't need is student apathy we need participation. Get involved -school is only what you want it to be start something, join, be active Get involved -it's your year now use it to give something to make NCHS remember you . National Honor Society The National Honor Society strives to produce leaders of the future within the high school. The four letters that express their creed are S-Scholarship, L-Leadership, C-Character, and S-Service. From the first trimester to the second trimester the student participation had increased by 30% . Students comments: It's all right! It has help out alot ' 'I think it's o.k. ' 'Almost Like a Song'' and 1 'The Greatest Love, to name a few, were performed during a spring concert with the band, at the Black History program in February and for surrounding junior highs and elementary schools. In making their music possible, the choir wishes to gratefully acknowledge the aid of Christine Belfield, (1978 graduate), Aretta Buckner, Sherri Blood, and Charisse Marrin, the accompanist. Next year the choir will aim for the knowledge to analyze each others performance and give supportive assistance. Mrs. Phillips 56 looks forwards to the underclassmen returning. A new director usually means a new sound for a band. Not for the 1979 Polar Band! They retained the same high quality and continued to improve while providing the dynamite sound for Pep Fests, home football and basketball games. And outstanding performance was broadcast over radio KMOJ and the band also gave a winter and spring concert with the choir. Being in such popular demand, they also played at various junior highs and elementary schools in hopes of inspiring Polar musicians of the future. Cold weather did not stop the Polars from celebrating sno-week! Twin Day, Monster Day, Sadie Haw'kins Day and Dress Up Day led up to the coronation of Ben Coleman, Sno King. Sno-Princes were Doug Hill, John Halverson, Leonard Jefferson, Randy Ohnstad and Cinda Olson. 58 Black History Week, celebrated February 13-16, was highlighted by speakers Ron Holbrook, Harry Moss, Earl Rogers, Randy Staten, Father Louis lohnson. Credit is due to advisors Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Lyle and Mr. Thompkins for their organizational effort. The week climaxed with the auditorium program headed by Todd McNeil and Sharon Berry. Many students proved their Polar pride by making the show a success. 60 mm Fine Arts Week Fine Arts Week at North included not only the traditional week long art show in the IMC, but also a modem dance program, band concert on the mall and a 1 'blow up'' celebration where balloons were decorated and released to publisize the week. This meant an hour in the sun for Polar students while the band played and festive spirits filled the air. Prom The 1978 Prom was held on May 19 at the Hopkins House. Prom goers danced to the music of Soda and enjoyed an evening of laughter and memories. The buffet dinner created a casual yet sophistocated atmoshpere. The prom was the climax of our Polar's 1978 year. 65 66 Meets the panel hired to pay tribute to him by ' 'Roasting him. listens to another one of Dr. Zimmerman's enthusiastic speeches. Guest speakers included Dr. Mel Hoglund, North Area Superintendant, and Mr. John Conover, retired North teacher. Dr. Zimmerman read an article from the Polaris dealing with school spirit, after which Roosevelt Pargo, Senior Class President and Jude Carlin, NHS President spoke. As the sun set over the field, the 1978 Seniors marched away from North into the world. - CHEERLEADING This year NCHS had three spirited cheerleading squads that helped the Polars to victories. A strong team was produced as a result. 106 Girls Golf Interest in golf as a sport seems to be growing as there were more women who tried out for the team in 1978. North Community High School is noted for its culturally and racially mixed student body. As students you have studied about other cultures and racial groups and here at North you have lived the things you have learned. Keep in mind that all learning is a willingness to experience new ideas, a willingness to be emotionally touched, and a willingness to listen with dignity and self-respect to others, as well as to yourself. Every privilege carries with it a responsibility'. Be willing to accept responsibility' for your behavior. Don't place the blame on someone else if you fail or fall short of your wish. William James stated, Man alone is the architect of his destiny. The greatest revolution in our generation is the discovery that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.'' If you have learned to 1 'change the inner attitudes'' of your mind and if you can accept the responsibility for your behavior, you will be prepared for whatever lies ahead.
