All of the players did their part, but could not pull off enough wins. We expect a much better team with many new faces and much more enthusiasm. Coach Ken Jones will be back next year to lead the team on. 102 This year's track team had a fine season with only three losses. They placed forth In the city and expect to take first place next year. With returning runners such as Cindy Theroult and Cherl Breedlove the team and their coaches have much confidence and are looking forward to an even better and faster season. In the past North has had outstanding individuals in track but not much depth nor team balance. The 1977 season combined the work of outstanding individuals and a turnout of 95 men to produce balance, depth, and most importantly WINS. The team posted a record of seven wins while only losing two meets and most of the wins were In meets Involving four and five schools. Such track powers as Southwest, Centra and Henry bit the cinders from the pressure exerted by the Polars. D. The year was calminated by captain Randy Ferber being a unanimous all-city selection and Billy Leo'n smashing North's soph-more record by 15 seconds. Terri Snoddy, Dawn Taylor and Julia Mosley made the All Conference team. This team set a Minneapolis Conference record with 33 consecutive wins. The 1977-1978 Sophomore Girls' Basketball squad is the defending City Champions. They compiled a 12 and 5 overall record and a 12 and 4 conference record. They are expected to remain City Champions by winning the All-City Tourney In Mid-March. Florla Ruffin, Pam Smith, and Evelyn Ross were cited by their coach, Ken Jones, for their distinguished play. WRESTLING The Wrestling team enjoyed one of the best seasons in over 15 years. With a record of 15 wins and 2 losses, it earned them 3rd place In the city. A lot of Freshmen came out for the team and showed great potential. Ray Copeland at 145lbs, and Roger Dostry at 112lbs, both Freshmen, started on the varsity squad. Thomas Jones, an 8th grader, proved himself with an impressive 7 wins for varsity at 98lbs. Guy Matson, a sophomore, also showed great potential with an 8 and 5 record for varsity at 155!bs. Duane Ittner came out with an 8 and 3 record at 119lbs. He did a great job for varsity, being this is his first year at wrestling. Alvin Jones, Ken Poullot, Jude Carlin, and Jack Mastrud were named All-City. Jude Carlin was voted by his team mates as most valuable wrestler. Pat Buckner was awarded the Coach's Award for his outstanding leadership, hard work and excellent record. In the Region 5-AA Tournament, Jude Carlin took 1st at 98lbs, Jack Mastrud took 2nd at Heavyweight, Pat Buckner placed 3rd at 185lbs, Ken Pouliot obtained 5th at 112lbs, and Marvin Roach placed 105lbs. With Jude Carlin's and Jack Mastrud's placing; it gained them birth to state. At State; Jude placed 5th, which is the highest a Polar grappler has ever obtained. Jack took 7th. Jack should be number 1 or number 2 man In the state next year. The Sophomore team, coached by Ray Carlson, placed 2nd in the Sophomore Tournament this year. Individually, Brian Mennegea at 155lbs. and Mike Zappa at 165lbs. placed 1st there. At that tournament, 10 received medals. With their spirit and potential; next year's team could be as successful as this year's. The highlight of the year was when the team defeated Washburn after being named a 20 point underdog. It also was Coach Chakolis's 100th coaching victory. The attitude of the team was outstanding. According to Coach Chakolis, very rarely did anyone miss a practice. It was a real pleasure for me to coach, he stated. The team met every challenge that he put before them. When the team was plagued with injuries and sickness; the quality was still there. Individually the wrestlers made sacrifices by going up and down weight classes. Only two teams managed to keep the Polars off the scoreboard this year with a three goals per game average scoring record. The forwards were led by returning lettermen Mark Bouley, Ron Bouley, Bill Rowles, and Brian Salce. On defense the team was led by letter-man Bill Foster and Jeff Larson with Dan Neumann and Chad Carlson two sophomores coming along to help as the season progressed. The young players on the team developed over the year allowing the team to play much stronger at the end of the year with the five to two win over West a team that had kept North scoreless the first time they played. Finishing the season strong with young players is a good Indication that with work the polars will be stronger and have a better season next year. It was dominated primarily by juniors and won meets by scoring in many different events. Well, the juniors have come of age!! In the first meet of the season North's team balance helped secure the Twin City Indoor Trophy over 23 schools In the metropolitan area. Randy Ferber led the team by winning the 300 yard dash and placing third in the state. The hurdlers also showed great power and depth. Bobby Williams (third in the state In the high hurdles) and Michael Larkins placed high in both the high and low hurdles. Other seniors who placed In the Twin City Meet were John McKinney In the sixty yard dash, Pat Buckner In the shot put and Charles Carter In the 440 yard dash. Rickey Washington received an injury prior to the meet or the Polars victory would have been even more decisive. However, it should be noted here that this Is not a team of individual stars as much as a well disciplined unit. This fact is born out by the great success the Polar relay teams have had for the last two years. The seniors lead the way but the coaches feel they may even have a stronger team In two years because of sophomores such as Glenn Thompson, Vince Fabel, Thomas Price, Peter Strugar, Whitson, Anthony Masengill and freshman Doug Brazil. Coaches Richard Chakolis, Sr., Anthony Queen and Richard Jacobsen are very optimistic about the coming season. Already 80 young men have signed up for track. With the talent the Polars have shown thus far and their hard working attitude they are the favorite to win both the City Relays and the City Meet.
