Antarctic polar bears are normally gentle until they are provoked and then they are known to become aggressive. North High Polars are generally easygoing until the opposing team is in the lead, at which time they come alive and their spirit carries them to victory. Polar bears are great wanderers and you can usually find them wandering for miles in the water on a single piece of ice. A North High Polar can be found resting on 3 park bench, shopping in the IDS, playing in the park or enjoying the sights from a tree.______________ Shirly Jackson, Dawn Taylor, Margeretta Tucker. SPRING ACTIVITIES North community High was fortunate to have an Art Show in our lovely IMC Center. The art show took place the week of May 12. The theme was The Open Eye . There were prizes for six different areas of art. The students who excelled in crafts, drawing, jewelry, painting, pottery and sculpture were rewarded for their exceptional artistic abilities. Our school prom was held May 21, 1976, at the Marriott Inn. The general atmosphere of the prom was one of enjoyment. The students and teachers danced to the music of Midwest Express . The graduating class of 1976 received their diplomas on the evening of June 7, 1976. The ceremony was held in our gymnasium at Six-thirty p.m. The cheerleaders of 1976-77 did an exceptionally good job to boost school spirit. Our cheerleaders faced a large task with cheeiv ing for both varsity and jr. varsity basketball, wrestling and football. Some of the cheerleaders feel this way: WERE BAD , CHEERING CAN BE ALOT OF FUN AND WORK TOO. IT'S WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT , MORE PESTERING WHEN YOU MESS UP , IT TAKES UP ALOT OF YOUR LEISURE TIME . Their advice to next years oncoming cheerleader is: Be able to get along with one another: The key word is; TOGETHERNESS CONCERT CHOIR Andromeda paul kiesling, roady tate, greg nutter from left to right - row 1: pam webb, lea ellis, Janice kassulker, kathy thompson, denna simms, theresa rice, elaine simpson, kathy thorson, melonese harris, lorraine hahn, kathy roufs, laurie ditty, Janet canton, marilynn king, yolanda applewhite, charisse marrin, cindy tallman. row 3: lorctta buckner, brenda standlcy, carrie hubert, roxanne duke, Jennie simpson, tammy platter, art buckncr, teddy henderson, bruce beggs, tom Johnson, vicky hayes, jenny Stewart, mars ha tyler, phyllis koenen, tcresa simpson, sandra mack, sherri webb. row 3: angela betts, bertha dillard, dcbbic Jefferson, debbie duke, Jody hime, eileen lapage, kathy brandt, andy beggs, greg nutter, matt csser, paul wicklund, geralyn kobeska, becky duke, jeraine cuff, carol Jameson, cheryl carter, rhonda duke, Janet Johnson, cindy carson, barb cameron, sue bruestad, tcresa breisc. row 4: darryl yngsdal, russel pierce, terry lang, Steve lang, Jim davis, danetta thedans, paul knutson, bob hamilton, dale thompson, keith fenning, steve weitzel, oscar ballcntine, dan hamilton, ray grayson, paul kiesling, manuel nevilles, roady tate The 1976-77 North High School Concert Choir had a tremendous year. Working hard to perfect their musical abilities, members of the choir were able to have fun performing in many concerts. The biggest concerts were performed in cities such as Toledo, Ohio, South Bend and Gary, Indiana, Niagra Falls, New York, and London, Ontario. Funds were raised through a candy sale and a gospel explosion. Several individual members of the choir did things which deserve recognition: The group Andromeda featuring greg nutter, roady tate, and paul kiesling performed a concert in early March, and was the back-up for the choir. Charisse marrin did an outstanding job the whole year as the choir's accompianist. Meloncsc Harris performed a recital in late January that was outstanding. This year nine members of the choir represented North in the twin city select choir, which included the top 140 high school singers in Minneapolis and St. Paul. These members are Melonese Harris, Marilynn King, Elaine Simpson, Aretta Buckner, Greg Nutter, Matt Esser, Roady Tate, Paul Kiesling and Paul Wickland. Darryl Yngsdahl was choir director as he has been for several years. -Paul Kiesling Choir Council: senior representative-matt esser; freshmen representative- paul wicklund; sophomore representative -charisse marrin; president - melonese harris; junior representative - roady tate. POLAR BAND the north high band (1976-77 edition) arc young and promising, the group which numbers 57 has performed at sporting events, pepfests, store grand openings, and in-concert, musicianship and pride are emerging from these fine group of students, the band received standing ovations and encores during their black-history month concert tour of Minneapolis-st. paul schools, the students take their music seriously. I am proud of the progress the band has made, we are losing only three students at graduation, which means that we will have the nucleus for an even stronger band in the future. lewis Jackson director left to right: row 1: mary schinit, lgri hartfiel, maurinc hildreth, patti robison, robin walker, Jeaneen martin, bobby davis, sherry platter, julcnc gave, row 2: tim Jackson, william esscr, madonna erickson, judy lund, re-becca schrhit, joan lund, brenda raisch, devra trapp, laurie thura, mr. Everyone grew and matured in their own way, becoming young men and women; learning their own style of journalism, taking responsibilities, and making decisions. Our friend and advisor of the Polaris is Mr. Roger Mahn. The editors are Renee Archambault and Charlotte McGregor. Members of the Polaris staff are Tyka Nelson, Virginia Klaustermier, Ardana Gross, Mitchell Rogers, Brad Stockel, Frannie New-ville, Theresa Krych, DeRonda Martin, Denise Sloan, Linda Lussier, Matt Martin, Patrick Dunham, and Carrie Hubert. Roger Mahn, the advisor, said Stagecraft is a class that makes people forget their prejudiced opinion of others, forces people into seeking immediate rewards and impels people to think how much effort goes into a successful production. Yvonne Lindemann is a 3-year stagecraft student who has helped with West Side Story , Guys and Dolls , Hello Dolly , Knaves , and is working on ,,Berna-dine now. She feels that it is never boring and that die is always learning, always growing , and the friends made are lasting ones. S.O.S. is a student centered learning environment. And like most things it cannot be all things to all people. One students feelings about S.O.S. were SOS could be better if more students went to classes and participated. This year we have a new coordinator, Jerry Kneisl, and also many new activities like the 90% club where students who attend their classes 90% of the time have an activity at the end of the week. We also have broomball games and our own Snow King and Queen. Our foods class prepared some dinners for the S.O.S. staff and the staff prepared an international potluck for our students. Students made their own newspaper and yearbook. The students found this class to be very educational, exciting and full of laughter. At North, plays have been staged to show gangs in different kiixis of conflicts. Conflicts dealing with man against man, or man against nature, or man against himself. Bemadine is not unlike the other plays in this sense, but it goes just a bit further to deal with a conflict every male desires, girls .... girls .... girls. Mr. Roger Mahn directed the comedy with the help of Yvonne Lindemann and Kelly Mastrud. The setting was built by the 5th and 6th hour stagecraft class with the supervision of Mr. Roger Mahn. Bemedine is set in the late 1940's and is about a kid named Wormy Weldy who is looking for a 1 'Bemedine''. Bemedine is the name given for the perfect woman by Beau and the rest of the gang. Coach Dick Chakolis is pleased with 4th place this year, in conference, even though five varsity wrestler's were injured most of the year. There were quite a few outstanding individuals. Senior Levy Jones took second in regions to gain a birth in the state Tournament; the first wrestler to do this in 18 years, his season record was 17-2 with 16 pins. Charles Scott the only other senior did an admirable job. Junior's Judy Carlin and Doug Hanson made the all city team at 98 lbs. and 119 lbs. respectively. Junior Joe Griffin posted on 11-3 record and will be strong next year. Sophmore Alvin Jones was J. V. champion at 180 lbs. Outstanding freshman Guy Mattson worked his way to varsity at 145 lbs. and did a fine job. Coach Chakolis would like a better turnout for next year so the team will have more depth; this is what the coach thinks will bring North a first place in the conference.
